Woman taken to Mater isolation unit with Ebola-like symptoms

A woman has been taken to the National Isolation Unit at the Mater Hospital, after falling ill at her Dublin home.

Gardaí have cordoned off the roads at the request of the HSE, who are leading the response.

The woman is believed to have returned recently from Nigeria, which was today announced clear of Ebola by the World Health Organisation, having had no new cases for 42 days.

Emergency protocols are in place to treat people who suffer certain symptoms after returning from a country where Ebola is reported.

However, a HSE source has indicated that the risk of the woman having contracted Ebola in Nigeria is "low".

Independent.ie newsdesk20 October 2014 01:05 PMA woman who fell ill at an apartment complex in West Dublin has been taken to the infectious disease unit in Mater Hospital after displaying symptoms, which are consistent with Ebola.

However, the risk has been called out "low risk" by a Mater Hospital spokesperson.

The woman, who is believed to be her 40s, fell ill this morning.

She had reportedly recently returned from Africa.

She has been taken to the National Isolation Unit at the Mater Hospital as a precaution, according to spokesperson for the Mater Hospital.

However, she is described as a "low level risk",* according to spokesperson from the Mater Hospital.

She is being kept in isolated unit as a precaution.

Earlier today an apartment complex in West Dublin was attended to by Gardai and the fire brigade after reports that a woman had fallen ill.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil Dublin West Councillor David McGuinness has called for calm following news that a suspected case of Ebola has been identified in Tyrrelstown this morning.

"Rumours were circulating around Dublin West this morning claiming that a person was being treated for suspected Ebola. I proactively contacted the HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre to ascertain the veracity of the reports. The news then broke in the media afterwards," Outlined McGuinness.

"Tyrrelstown has a high population of families with links to Western Africa. This is a very serious incident which will have a significant impact on the public. I am calling for calm and a campaign of public information to offset any panic in Dublin West," concluded McGuinness.

It is thought that the woman is considered at low risk of having Ebola.

The HSE said there are no known cases of Ebola in Ireland and that the overall risk of such a case is low.

If a case is suspected or confirmed the primary concern is treating the patient and containing the situation, the agency said.

A spokesperson said the HSE's overriding consideration is maintaining medical confidentiality and in that regard it is obliged not to comment on the condition of any person.

I wonder if they ruled out Ebola because Nigeria has been declared Ebola free.

They don't realize that Nigeria won their Ebola free status by threatening jail time to anyone who reports a case of Ebola.

Thanks for the reminder! I had forgotten that the nigerian gov had done that. I'm betting that most people who were paying attention have forgotten it too (to say nothing of the people who never paid attention to begin with).

Nigeria has criminalized reporting of Ebola cases. We may safely assume people are refusing to seek medical treatment and denying they have Ebola, just like in West Africa.
