(SUN) Spectacular Coronal Mass Ejection

Impat

I would guess yes, as the most likely spots were more or less earth pointing. It might still just give us a glancing blow.

I caught this today and kinda wondered if something was going to happen:

wow, that last pic is exceptionally bright.
if there's a CME headed this way and it takes somebodies grid down, this is a baaaad time of year for that kind of thing.
might be a good time to start role-playing :

what if the grid goes down Tuesday and doesn't come back?

Had a feeling we would be seeing this one blast us a few times. Bet we are gona get 'space debris' from this one. (charged particals). Next few frames will tell.
(and I hope they are aiming North).

Hey, we have permission to post solar stuff here? Or is it CMEs and no flares?

just still tring to figure it all out.

And as it spreads............

Jed, I wouldn't worry too much. We got hit straight on by much larger ones in Oct/Nov.

SOLAR ACTIVITY: Sunspot 537 has a "beta-gamma-delta class" magnetic field that harbors energy for powerful X-class solar flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 15% chance of such an explosion during the next 24 hours. [aurora gallery]

Of course, with some bad luck................

Still ongoing

and showing an interesting and complex blast pattern. From the latest pic it is still ongoing with maybe another follow up cme coming out.

Rex, those proton storms are very impressive. The first one I saw back around 1999 scared the bejeses outta me. I'd been watching lasco/soho for years at that point and had never seen anything like that.

Too Tired to ReTire
Dragonslayer... This is sort of an ADMIN...

You might want to modify your title a bit... this is far from a spectacular CME...

If you are new to watching the sun, this might be exciting to you, but it is pretty punny as CME's that we have seen even in this solar cycle... So the ADMIN is for you to do some homework and learn the difference between sort of normal stuff and spectacular...

If you continue with false titles I will move your threads to Unexplained...

I do like watching the sun, but I do not like making stuff that is just regular seem like it is something to get all riled up about.

With all due respect, I Think it's pretty nice. And "spectacular" doesn't necessarily mean it has to be pointing right at us and threatening to toast us to oblivion. Are you the one that decides at which point a CME becomes "Spectacular"?

At least he's not saying [BRKG] or [ALERT] or something... Sheesh. It IS spectacular when you think about it's true enormity in comparison to the size of the earth.

Another

fairly large CME has hurled another mass of charged detrius into the cosmic spaces. Quite likely coming towards us, or at least part of it. This is from C2. C3 hasn't been updated for a couple of hours and shows just the start of it.

"what if the grid goes down Tuesday and doesn't come back?"

There would be a LOT of dead people in the Northeast. We are expecting temps to be up to 45 degrees BELOW normal for here. Wind chill factors down to 35 degrees BELOW 0!

I am praying that the electricity stays on this week!

"this is far from a spectacular CME..."

;) I guess that depends on how you define 'spectacular'. :)

spec·tac·u·lar (spµk-t²k“y…-l…r) adj. 1. Of the nature of a spectacle; impressive or sensational. --spec·tac·u·lar n. Something that is spectacular, as: a. A single dramatic production of unusual length or lavishness. b. An elaborate display.

DS your last post of todays CME is a dupe

http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=88415

not like it matters or anything seeing stuff is 'flug' all over the place around here as usual.

So I guess CMEs are posted on the main forum again?

damn

-------------------------------------------------

As far as CMEs go, this CME is not spectacular (compared to Octobers wave of CMEs) but is bares watching because this sunspot is capable of delivering grid dropping blows.

It is also powerful enough for the enemy to drop our grid hoping to make it look like it was natural therefor reducing the probability of a retaliatory strike by the US.

For the grid to collapse, I believe it would take a series of X-class in succession hitting like a hammer with the each one weakening Earth's protective shield as it comes. After a hole is punched through, it would be clear sailing for the kill shot BUT according to NASA the magnetic direction of the blast would need to be facing South and not North like our large hit back in October. Another possibility would be a huge flare (X-30 +) aimed directly at us with a Southerly aimed pattern.

This hammer type of storm is what I fear and HAVE been seeing. In addition, Christian for Israel has located several images of a prior sunspot showing a 'pulse' as it releases energy. This pulse and/or back to back flares may be what we need to watch for but who knows, I see something new every day.

Black Out
Who cares if it's spectacular or not. It's still a big one and it could cause problems here on the blue marble. I guess it will be spectacular if it knocks out the power or causes a major quake.

I am listening to Jim McCanney on mysteriesofthemind.com and they were just discussing that today it was noticed that there is a new dome on Mt St Helen's. Apparently the camera watching Mt St Helen's went down too...hmmm.

Comets

Now, Mccanney has stated that an almost continuous stream of comets have been coming from the south, and Rex said he spotted one in the last day or two.

The huge explosions on the sun in the late fall 2003 were, I am convinced, the results of a series of comets hitting the sun during a period of large sunspots on the sun.

Currently, sunspot numbers are low, and I do not have any confirmation on comets nearing the sun.

This is from Jim's website, did anyone else hear about this quake?

january 10, 2004 emergency posting ... this morning 90 miles from anchorage alaska a 7.1 earth quake registered and there has been an unusual silence in the news media ... as it confirms my ongoing contention that many of these quakes are due to solar flaring as was the case with the alaska quake ... however the pressing issue remains with the Yellowstone volcano situation which is in a geological cycle to erupt again ... scroll down to listen to my january 8, 2004 radio show archive for details ... i have also noticed what appears to be continual influx of comets from the south with the SOHO data being altered or outright deleted almost daily now ... jim mccanney

has shot off the sun in the last hour or so. The earth is also 5 million miles closer to the Sun right now.

What exactly is UNEXPLAINED about a CME?

Seems to me they are QUITE "explainable", being precisely documented scientific phenomena. To me, "Unexplained" means UFO's and little green men, NOT a clearly pictured and scientifically definable CME.

So, just because YOU PERSONALLY don't find this CME spectacular enough, you feel it proper to censor ME from deciding for MYSELF whether I PERSONALLY find it to merit the term "spectacular" or not????

!!!

Sorry, but I do not appreciate being patronized. I am a big girl, and can decide for myself whether I think something is spectacular or not.

I just spent 10 minutes searching for this thread, because I had been wondering what the sun is doing lately, had noted the title, and had wanted to read it when I first saw it on the main board---but then suddenly it wasn't there.....but here----???

If I read it, and find that the title is overblown, then I (and I think the others on this board as well) are mature enough to let it die the natural death it would then deserve and drift off into hyper-oblivion.

I do NOT, however, need someone else to proctor this for me.

Mistitled? perhaps. THAT is a matter of opinion.

But "UNEXPLAINED"???? Hardly.

Helium, you have done, in my opinion, a disservice to Dragonslayer and to all of us.

Please trust the judgment and wisdom of the people on this Board more than that.

Thank you.

Strange flaring and spreading cme

CFI, you pic, if you posted one didn't post, so I don't know if you are trying to post the same as this:

unusual bright, clear flaring from sun, followed by several hours of a "creeping" coronal mass ejection, of a type not typical.

The sun has been streaming and shooting cme's almost continuously for days and days now: are we leading up to another round of large X classes?

Time will tell.

And the spreading cme

if you follow the sequence, you will see this spreading, creeping mass of ejecta flowing out for hours from the sun.

Now, my concern, is if Mccanney is right, and more comets are coming from the south, as the huge flares two months ago seem to have been triggered by just such action.

And,

just for something to look forward to, this is what is coming round the mountain (As Cyg likes to sing). Now, flaring seems much brighter round' the corners than when it faces us, so what is now appearing to be bright spots may end up being the same size as what is currently facing us.

dragonslayer ; The connection between CME's and the severe weather (imo) is a very real and present danger... We are being told today to brace ourselves for temps way below 0 and high winds will bring it down to 50 & 60 BELOW O ....OMG we are used to cold temps in Maine but this is just plain SCARY!!:shk:

Impat

Yes, for over a week we have been getting warnings of -33 to -47 degrees CELSIUS (which is worse than Farenheit). That is about -72 degrees or thereabouts BELOW the point water turns to ice, and that - does not include WIND CHILL added.

Scary, cold, is worse to follow?

After the massive explosions of nov 2003 I bought army surplus cold weather face masks for everyone.

Just waiting to buy more cold weather gear - thus keeping a very close watch on the sun and stratosphere.

Which is also why I want this info on the front page, but other powers have decided otherwise.

I feel this is very important, quite possibly more important than a terrorist groups that can't shoot straight, and the public does have a right to know.

Can't someone do a poll about this? I don't think it makes sense to have this here. I prefer it in the main section.

dragonslayer: I haven't seen a post about the sun since yesterday.. Anything new? Please keep us informed...

Yes, those spots do look impressive. However, others in the last month or so looked good on the angle but weren't much straight on and no big explosions.

So I will wait and see.

However, if it is as big as it looks, and comets come streaking in.........................
