Suggestions For a Good Walking Shoe?

I've read many of the postings on preps, and one item I've not seen listed or discussed is a good pair of walking shoes. Since in certain scenarios, we could be walking if we wish to go anywhere at all, what is a good all around walking shoe. It would have to be comfortable, and fit properly of course. But also durable, and not cheaply made.

Anyone have any suggestions of a good walking shoe that would be good for walking five to ten miles a day, on pavement or roadway? I know hiking boots would also be good, but for lighter work on paved roads, anyone have a good suggestion for a quality shoe?

TIA

check out REI.com they make lightweight hikers, and I suggest you target 10-20 miles a day, 5 miles is a walk in the park, a couple hours maybe three depending on terrain & if your wearing a pack or not

For warm weather and possibly wet conditions a pair of Teva sandals cant be beat---put more than a thousand miles on a pair last year and they are still in good shape.

Ditto on the Teva sandals! I bought a pair a few months back and they really are awesome.

I also bought a pair of Ecco (Receptors) sandals a few years back that are in very good condition - lots of use!

I guess you have to have summer wear and winter wear for your feet.

I have a lightweight pair of Nike ACG Gore-tex hikers that I wear this time of year. I have a heavier leather pair, also Nike, with a heavy sole that I wear for heavy work like mowing, etc.

If I was simply walking it would be the first pair I mentioned. If on pavement, then I might even wear my sneakers.

Don't forget good socks. I love wool socks of various thicknesses year-round.

I want to bump this thread for selfish reasons. I need to find some good walking leather shoes as well.

One problem: I wear a size 15.

I have had several pair of Red Wings when I was on the department but they have the softer sole and I would go through them pretty fast.

I was thinking more of a chukka boot, but the places I've tried dont carry my size.

And forget socks! Most of the Chinee ones stop at size 12. I know Ive been in at least 5 local stores and nary anything in size 15 shoes or socks.

Anybody help a poor bigfoot out?

timbo--have you ever bought a pair and had an additional sole put on or had them re-soled?

I used to have my boots re-soled on occ. when I really liked them and they had lots of wear left.

Timbo

Horse wears 16 and his colt wears 17. :D

I buy Horse's work boots, everyday wear, at our local Farm and Fleet. They order them and keep them in stock because I buy a few pairs a year.

Check out Cabela's catalog or on line. They carry new balance and some others although not alot. If you order a catalog, they have one with mostly clothing which has the biggest selection.

Also try Big and Tall. They have some but they are geared more, I think, to everyday shoes and Horse wears boots.

Also the animal supply catalogs have some boots. ValleyVet, Jeffer's ect.

I use New Balance walking shoes with Dr. Scholl's gel insert for my daily fitness walk with 5lb weights in each hand. For leather walkers I have a pair of K-Swiss walkers. I prefer light rather than heavy, but make sure I have good cushions in the soles.

Concur New Balance.

Still mostly made in the U.S. My New Balance U.S.Postal Approved's are.

The Etonic's are nice but sadly made in China.

New balance.

I used to have plantar fasciitis in my right foot. When I switched to the New Balance shoes, it went away. Significant.

I just purchased a pair of Naot Shoes-- wonderful! Made in mens and womens. They are made in Israel, and mold to your foot. Very sturdy. A friend of mine threw away all their other shoes and now owns 4 pairs of Naots. I have a foot injury, and these feel great. Very durable and extremely well made-- have a warranty on them also.

I loved my Maphistos. But they are French, so they went out the window with the French's mustard and now I wear SAS--San Antonio Shoe. Probably made by illegals.

I've had the same pair of New Balance shoes for about 3 years. Still in perfect condition and very comfortable. I wear them everyday to work and I'm a waitress. My feet never hurt.

Those look good Maureen, but they 'only' go to 14........sigh...story of my life.

I've had several pair of New Balance over the years and they are darn good sport shoe but what Im looking for is a more rugged 'off the road' chukka boot in leather.
Would like if they were waterproof but even water resistant would be great.

When you look for such a specific boot like I am,it's tough to find it in my size.

Being 220 also I have a tendency to wear out the sole faster than lighter people as well.

Red Wing shoes (the ones I had at least couldnt be re-soled) are great. The leather is the best.
First pair I bought while on the dept. lasted me many years.

Same here. I wore my first pair completely out. I mean that literally.

When the right side of my right shoe finally split lengthwise and my foot came popping out, I trashed them. Even up to that point, they were more comfortable than the replacements I'd purchased.

Oh yeah, they have size 15 men's socks too......in 6 packs for about $52 depending on fiber content.

Free shipping and return shipping. And those size 15s start at $39 (sort by price).

I have the SAS in a 14D they go a year or two then I wear out the heal like you do Timbo. I like the shoe, does not take a lot of break in, and the leather uppers are nice.

New Balance. I had a heal spur that was killing me. I went to the pediatrist and she told me that New Balance was the best shoe out, but you have to buy the first run (top of the line)(and expensive). I did as she suggested. My heal spur went away. It was a miracle. Now, New Balance is all I wear. I am a nurse and walk alot. I wouldn't wear anything different.

I think I'll look at the New Balance. I've lately had foot problems, including spurs. That brand seems to be getting many of the votes here.

Really good suggestions from all.
