Stupid $#&*( snakes!

We just came inside from *trying* to pick some maters from the garden for lunch. Ha! A butt-ugly 5' black snake was in the front yard, blocking our way. Stupid thing wouldn't move. I just about stepped on the thing. Dogs chased him into the ditch but he kept coming back. Dogs gave up and came in, too.

I so wanted some maters for lunch. :bwl:

What do black snakes eat? May-be there was something in your maters that you wouldn't have wanted to encounter? I'm thinking of King Snakes that go after rattlers. Do black snakes do the same?

For goodness sakes lady, if you almost stepped on it why didn't you just step OVER it oraround it or go get 'maters when the dogs were chasing it and keeping it busy? Geesh, they are not dangerous and don't think and you as a human do both and you allowed a "stupid" snake to defeat you. ;)

Ah, there's a flaw in your thinking there. You're assuming I'm smarter than the snake.

I'm not for certain what they eat but I believe they eat other snakes, rodents, and such. So, I don't mind them at all as long as I'm not right on top of them. ;) This one was in big butthead mode, though. The black snakes will usually slither off first chance they get but this one decided that that particular piece of real estate was his and was going to fight for it. Nah, it wouldn't have killed me to get bitten. Nor would it have made me ill. Still would have hurt, though, and I'm not overly fond of pain. :chkn:

Btw, it was between the house and the chicken coop, nowhere near the garden and maters. It was blocking the way, though. Butthead.

I know my old neighbors ( all farmers ) used to like to encourage black snakes around their outbuildings for rodent control. We had a pair that used to live at the base of our concrete block milk house and I never recall seeing any rats around the barn. But I never saw one in the middle of our yard that I had to step over either. Ours were rather shy, which was fine with me.

Ah, chickencoop - that explains it. Snakes like eggs. They also like small rodents, and when I had a little house near a cornfield I encouraged black snakes to take up residence in the attic to keep the mouse population down. Worked like a charm.

We have king snakes, garter snakes, gopher snakes and rattlesnakes - mostly rattlesnakes. This has been a light year thank goodness.

The two episodes with rattlers I remember like they were yesterday were: One time I was in my shop working at the workbench when I heard a "buzz". Yup, there was a snake under the bench next to my foot who was really PO'd that I was there.

Another time I was sitting on a lawn chair out on the patio when a ratteler came along and coiled up under the chair to get out of the sun. That was also a real thrill too.

Ah, the joys of the country.

Ooh, BBQ snake!! *drool* Ya gonna come down and catch & clean 'em? There are about a billion of 'em so we have enough to share.

Yeah, our snakes are always shy, too, slithering away at the first hint of someone (or some dog) coming near. Not this one, tough. I think it must have been female because it had the worst case of PMS I've ever seen! :)

Rattlesnakes? *shudder* Those, copperheads, and moccasins freak me out even just thinking about them! :ecrz: Luckily, we've only seen copperheads around here so far. The neighbors said they've seen moccasins around our pond (they often fish there) but we never have.

Our hens aren't laying yet but they should be starting any week now. Time to start nagging DH about getting a better henhouse built. (We really need a smilie woman with a whip. :D )

Here's kind of a funny moccasin story (at least I think it is): We had a chemical plant in Georgia. The plant effluent was treated in waste lagoons some way from the plant. There was a tin shed there where tests were made.

One time druing the third shift two guys were in the shed doing testing when a storm blew up with lots of lightning. The one guy is afraid to leave because there are moccasins all over the place and he won't be able to see them through the rain. The other guy is afraid of the lightning. In the end, they both stood outside the shed in the rain until the storm passed since neither of them had the guts to go anywhere.

At least they kept each other company.
