INTL Storm brings snow disruption to Greek capital

I don't know if this snowstorm hit Turkey or Syria as well, I am posting it separately from the Europe thread because it is shocking and unusual. I'm leaving in the photo because it is the Parthenon (really) covered in snow. The storm even went out into the Aegean. This doesn't happen; it just doesn't [My German Housemate says, "it does this every couple of Winters" - "it just doesn't last, but it rarely lasts."]. I suspect the internet outage in Italy may have been from a small earth movement or a "slow" quake unless they found another season by this morning, and I haven't looked yet. The Earthquake was felt in the capital of Egypt! If this were the old days, people would wonder how the gods had been offended.

Anyway, this is unusual at least in MY memory (lol)

A winter storm brought snow to the Greek capital Athens, closing schools, nurseries and courts and disrupting both traffic and power supplies.

The government advised people to avoid non-essential travel and work from home if possible, in a bid to avoid the chaos caused by heavy snow last winter, for which the authorities came in for severe criticism.

The storm, dubbed Barbara by Greek meteorologists, reached Athens on yesterday afternoon after sweeping through the north of Greece and islands in the North Aegean Sea.

Authorities reopened both the roads to Athens international airport, 30km from the centre, and the main artery linking the city to Lamia in central Greece after they were closed for several hours early this morning.

The national civil protection service warned significant snowfall was expected in the Attica region around Athens, which is unused to harsh winters.

Around 3,500 people were trapped in their cars on the Athens ring road, and more than 200,000 homes and businesses were without power.

Wow!! That’s just crazy!
Some of those people have probably never even SEEN snow before!
Even if my housemate is correct, you are probably right. It snowed in Berkeley-Oakland a few times when I lived there, but it was always at night and only for a short time, and it was gone by morning. Even my housemate agreed that it was the usual snow in Athens, and this stuff stuck in broad daylight. I suspect the Churches will be full and the Greek Revival Pagans that recently won the right to use their old places for worship will be out in force within hours.
