Statement from President Joe Biden on Averting a Rail Shutdown

I am calling on Congress to pass legislation immediately to adopt the Tentative Agreement between railroad workers and operators – without any modifications or delay – to avert a potentially crippling national rail shutdown.

This agreement was approved by labor and management negotiators in September. On the day that it was announced, labor leaders, business leaders, and elected officials all hailed it as a fair resolution of the dispute between the hard-working men and women of the rail freight unions and the companies in that industry.

The deal provides a historic 24% pay raise for rail workers. It provides improved health care benefits. And it provides the ability of operating craft workers to take unscheduled leave for medical needs.

Since that time, the majority of the unions in the industry have voted to approve the deal.

During the ratification votes, the Secretaries of Labor, Agriculture, and Transportation have been in regular touch with labor leaders and management. They believe that there is no path to resolve the dispute at the bargaining table and have recommended that we seek Congressional action.

Let me be clear: a rail shutdown would devastate our economy. Without freight rail, many U.S. industries would shut down. My economic advisors report that as many as 765,000 Americans – many union workers themselves – could be put out of work in the first two weeks alone. Communities could lose access to chemicals necessary to ensure clean drinking water. Farms and ranches across the country could be unable to feed their livestock.

As a proud pro-labor President, I am reluctant to override the ratification procedures and the views of those who voted against the agreement. But in this case – where the economic impact of a shutdown would hurt millions of other working people and families – I believe Congress must use its powers to adopt this deal.

Some in Congress want to modify the deal to either improve it for labor or for management. However well-intentioned, any changes would risk delay and a debilitating shutdown. The agreement was reached in good faith by both sides.

I share workers’ concern about the inability to take leave to recover from illness or care for a sick family member. No one should have to choose between their job and their health – or the health of their children. I have pressed legislation and proposals to advance the cause of paid leave in my two years in office, and will continue to do so. Every other developed country in the world has such protections for its workers.

But at this critical moment for our economy, in the holiday season, we cannot let our strongly held conviction for better outcomes for workers deny workers the benefits of the bargain they reached, and hurl this nation into a devastating rail freight shutdown.

Congress has the power to adopt the agreement and prevent a shutdown. It should set aside politics and partisan division and deliver for the American people. Congress should get this bill to my desk well in advance of December 9th so we can avoid disruption.

JUST IN: @POTUS Biden calls on Congress to ratify labor deal reached with railroad unions this fall, saying a fight for more concessions can’t be allowed to happen because it could “hurl this nation into a devastating rail freight shutdown.”

You can force a man to go to work.

You gotta work to fire him.

Eta: I can't understand why anyone would subject themselves to the RR work schedule.

This has been a long time coming.

I didn't see where it mentioned the actual workers saying what a great deal it is
let the negotiators--leaders and elected officials run the trains

ETA--great job having all of this come about AFTER the mid-terms

Heard this news story on the local news, where they ended with a Fed Gov shut down on December 16th of this year, which is the first I have heard about that happening.

I think this is what's driving the report that you heard on your local news

Biden Signs Continuing Resolution Keeping Government Running Through Dec. 16

President Joe Biden on Friday signed a stopgap funding bill into law, preventing a government shutdown on the last day of the fiscal year.

The continuing resolution keeps the government funded through Dec. 16, giving lawmakers more time to pass Fiscal Year 2023 funding bills, including the annual defense appropriations legislation.

The House passed the measure on Friday after the Senate passed the CR on Thursday.
Both chambers are in recess until after Election Day, meaning both the FY 2023 defense spending and policy bills will not pass until November at the earliest.

“As the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, I am committed to completing the work of the Committee before the end of this Congress. Running on autopilot after December with rising inflation would be irresponsible,” Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said in a statement. “It would leave priorities – of both Republicans and Democrats – underfunded and under resourced. The federal government funds programs that the American people rely on, and we should do the job they sent us here to do.”

Under a CR, the Pentagon cannot spend money on new-start programs and its funding is limited to the prior fiscal year’s levels.

While the Senate Appropriations Committee in its mark of the FY 2023 spending bill sought to increase the defense topline $30 billion over the Biden administration’s request, the House Appropriations Committee met the Biden administration’s request for $762 billion.

The committees will need to work out the differences during the conference process.

Sometimes it is easy to read between the lines with what they say. They copy Christianity in their attempt to speak things into being, and they also make announcements.

With the dots already connected and the projected coming convergence of evil, things are looking like we are close to the end. Going to continue to pray about this and tell God honestly how I am feeling about all of this. He cares about each and every one of us, don't forget about that!

REMEMBER that this INCLUDES no sick time OR other time off. You work 24/7/365 1/4 (plus on occasion)
I got all that now but still work mostly 24/7. I'd take the 24% raise. They won't let me hire more people and I have to do 3 jobs. On vacation I still have to work.

Only a 24% pay raise? <sarc>

We know how THIS works...except this time, it's on EVERYTHING, not just illegal scalp tonic.

I just came on a few minutes ago...there is also, not trying to derail the thread, but all related, the looming potential "govt shutdown" with December 16th deadline, the same-sex marriage bill that the senate voted on today that evidently has perversion added in, and "religious freedom," "gaslighting being Merriam-Webster's no. 1 word for 2022, and Mauna Loa erupting..." and I don't know, I haven't had time to see if these are posted...I am OVERWHELMED right now with all of this!

Praise be to God!

I think I agree.

Please note, folks, that FJB is now spraying aerosolized kerosene around at RRs and labor. We're at the stage where we don't REALLY NEED a lit match or lighter. A simple cigarette will be fine to initiate the conflagration that WILL burn this edifice down.

I would recommend a tad bit of research into Southern Coal Fields of West Virginia and the fun and frolic of THOSE labor games.
(HINT: the national org "Pinkerton" has NO OFFICES and does NO OPEN biz there. ANYONE handing out a "Pinkerton" business card will LIKELY find his route out of town HIGHLY GREASED and be hastened on his way....or sent on his way to a meeting with his Maker.
Of course an AFIMAC card will get much the same response.
