FOOD Starkist Tuna

So I made myself a tuna sandwich for lunch today, it's sitting right in front of me.

I just triple checked the can, Solid White Tuna, wild caught. It was a mix of mush and glops of tuna. It was white, but looked like cat food. Honestly the taste is ok, but the texture, yuk.

Any ideas on a decent brand/type of tuna for me to switch to?

I actually think Aldi's solid pack tuna is excellent. Just solid tuna meat, fills the whole can.

You may have just got a can that was at the end of the production run.

I love Oregon's Choice. Direct from the boat and canner. It comes in salt free also and the larger cans.

Tuna has not been good for years, imho. I have wondered what has been done to it. When I had a cat, even HE wouldn't eat it! Now that's some bad tuna. I don't recall the brand at the time...maybe chicken of the sea.

Well someone get Samoa on the phone and tell them Island Time is over!

Wish I could have made it to Samoa before the world went crazy.

Mark my words. I can easily see a future where a can of "mush and glops" tuna will be seen as a luxury item that you'll be lucky to have.

We use Wegmans yellow fin tuna in water.
The entire can is solid tuna...no mush
Gave up other tuna years ago, except the flat envelopes of tuna in water. $1 at the dollar store...and not mushy.

We also use only king oscar mediterranean sardines and mackerel packed in olive oil...are more expensive than some. The mackerel have 3000mg of omega-3 per can and a long shelf life and the sardines have to 2500mg of omega-3 per can.

We also use their kipper snacks which have 1800mg of omega-3 per can....all of which are wild caught in the north Atlantic. All three have a lot of protein. .15 to 17 grams per can.

My Dad graduated high school in 1929 and canned fish was depression food...he taught me young to enjoy canned fish
on saltine crackers..

We add the left over oils to our old great dane's dinner.

Yes, when I lived in Roch, that's the brand I bought. The rich peeps always bought the best solid white albacore, so I tried the yellow fin and it was great. They have a nice brand of it here in FL, but right now I don't remember the name. I have to get some more next time, and I'll put it on the food thread if anyone is interested.

When they try to jam a fish that size into a little can like that there's bound to be some slippage.

I really like a good tuna salad but almost quit making it in the last couple years JUST because it’s been a waterymushy mess!!
I thought I was the only one lol!

I’ve got too much stocked to waste so maybe pop for a really $$ brand and mix it in with the cruddy stuff.

I'm not going to tell you about a brand but give you a health heads up about this.........

White Albacore tuna is made from tuna that are further up the food chain (large fish) than the cheaper dark tuna which is made from smaller fish.........

As a result the Albacore white tuna has 3 times the mercury in it than dark tuna.............because the bigger tuna eat small fish and have more of an accumulation of mercury from other species inside them as well.

Darker tuna also has more healthy fat (not the oil packed cans as you should always get water packed cans) from the fish itself than Albacore............

So for health reasons stay with dark tuna.......it is cheaper, better omega fatty acids and less mercury all around.

I used to eat 20 cans a week of it many decades ago in my weight lifting program before China started industrializing and burning all the dirty coal plants for electricity whose by product includes mercury fallout into the pacific.....

.....but nowadays because of that I have to limit myself to 5 - 6oz cans a week and no more...........

With Albacore it should be no more than 1 stinkin 6 oz can a week...............

So in addition to the virus..... that's another thing you can chalk up to the chinks........

Another really good brand of albacore tuna is Trader Joe's but unfortunately there isn't one where we live. We get it when we go to Florida. Discovered Aldis and was so relieved. Tried Starkist, Chicken of the Sea, and Bumblebee - yuck! They used to be so good. No longer.

I have to ask: how long has it been since you’ve eaten canned tuna? I noticed the change at least 5 years ago. Even started a thread on it. These days, only the “specialty” tuna costing $1.50 or more per can, will provide what you wish. The big food service cans will too however, but you’ll have to freeze it after you open the can.

Seriously though, how many years since you opened a can of tuna?

Genova Premium Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil, Wild Caught, Solid Light,

I use to buy it by the 24 can case, now way too expensive, but I still have some. I ate this between husband #3 and husband #4, when I was taking better care of myself. Its still my go to tuna, but since DH is clueless I give him the stuff we get in commodities. But I do a lot of other things to help keep him healthy.

This is my favorite brand.

God is good all the time
