Squatters Are Taking Over Homes All Over The Nation On An Industrial Scale And Turning Them Into Dens Of Crime

Authored by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog,

Squatting has always been a problem, especially in certain parts of the nation, but now it is happening on an industrial scale all over America.

Thanks to online listings, it is easier than ever to identify properties that are vacant, and many states have laws that make it exceedingly difficult to get squatters out once they have settled in.
In some cases, squatters are able to live rent free in beautiful homes for months or even years. This is becoming an absolutely massive problems, especially in certain areas of the country. For example, it is being reported that squatters have taken over approximately 1,200 homes in the Atlanta area…

Squatters are ruining entire neighborhoods in Atlanta and police response to evict is so slow, some homeowners have resorted to paying nuisances to leave.
Brazen squatters even opened an illegal strip club on a property they had taken over — one of the 1,200 homes which has been squatted in the city, according to the National Rental Home Council (NRHC) trade group.
“I’d be terrified in Atlanta to lease out one of my properties,” Matt Urbanski, who manages a local home-cleaning company, told Bloomberg.
There is no way in the world that I would want to own a rental property in that city.

If you can believe it, there is even one company that has been running ads on social media offering to find a prime squatter home in Atlanta for you for a fee

At first glance, it looks just like another real estate pro hustling to rent homes on social media.
But at 1 Time Payment Homes, the site makes it clear these are squatter homes and spells out just what that means in a pinned Insta story.
“The company’s owners will come out, so will the police. The police will tell you there’s nothing they can do about it — squatters rights,” our Channel 2 producer J.P. read off the Instagram account.
Recently, 1 Time Payment Homes has actually been running a “New Year’s special”.

$1,400 will get you the keys to a squatter home so that you can “stack money and turn ya life around”.

Whoever is behind 1 Time Payment Homes should be in prison.

But that is not how America works in 2024

Instead, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone gave those behind 1 Time Payment Homes some type of award.

Of course it isn’t just in Atlanta where squatting has become such a widespread issue.

In the state of Washington, squatters have taken over an entire apartment complex and have turned it into a den of crime

Squatters and crime are taking over a Fife apartment complex. Families and the people handling the property are both beyond frustrated.
The problems are at the Sherwood Park Apartments. Police say the situation also attracted a ton of criminal activity. Now officers regularly patrol the area because of all the problems.
Most of the units at the complex are covered in plywood.
“It’s bad,” said Angel, a resident at the apartments. “The cops are here 24/7. Every day, every night. I keep my kids inside. I don’t let them out.”
Thanks to the absurd laws in that state, it isn’t going to be easy to get those squatters out.

California also has ridiculous laws, and right now “a very sophisticated criminal ring of squatters” is making a ton of money from the Beverly Hills mansion that they have occupied…

A Beverly Hills mansion seized by the court from a fugitive surgeon behind California’s biggest insurance fraud scheme is now a wild party house taken over by squatters, who are profiting off of regular ragers that are driving neighbors nuts.
The Mediterranean estate at 1316 Beverly Grove, listed for $4.5 million has been occupied by “a very sophisticated criminal ring of squatters,” the home’s listing agent John A. Woodward IV tells Los Angeles magazine. The squatters, he believes, are earning upwards of $30,000 a month renting rooms and hosting huge house parties with $100 entry fees.
This sort of thing is happening all over the nation, but the worst problems are in blue states with laws that are very favorable for squatters.

Every single day, predatory squatters are scanning online listings in order to identify their next targets

It’s also gotten easier for squatters to find homes to move into.
Online listings and virtual real estate agents can allow squatters to find vacant addresses and gain access by booking fake appointments.
Some people may not even know they are squatters as scam artists can set up fake listings for empty properties and fake lease agreements.
Once a squatter is in, it’s hard to get them out. It can take three months to get a court hearing for an eviction, and another three months to get a deputy or marshal to clear out the home.
What these squatters are doing is so wrong, but it is getting worse with each passing year.

Meanwhile, things just get harder and harder for people that are trying to do things the right way. In recent years, many have seen rental prices skyrocket to absolutely insane levels

Single mom Caitlyn Colbert watched as rent for her two-bedroom apartment doubled, then tripled and then quadrupled over a decade in Denver — from $750 to $3,374 last year.
Every month, like millions of Americans, Colbert juggled her costs. Pay rent or swim team fees for one of her three kids. Rent or school supplies. Rent or groceries. Colbert, a social worker who helps people stay financially afloat, would often arrive home to notices giving her 30 days to pay rent and a late fee or face eviction.
“Every month you just gotta budget and then you still fall short,” she said, adding what became a monthly refrain: “Well, this month at least we have $13 left.”
The worse that housing affordability becomes, the more people are going to be tempted to engage in squatting.

Of course this squatting crisis is just one of the ways that our society is descending into complete and utter lawlessness.

We wanted a society where anything goes, and now that is precisely what we have got.

If you need to leave your home for a while, you may want to lock it up very tight, because there are plenty of squatters that would love to invade while you are gone.

Such crap!

I have to look into our laws. I'm trying to put together a trip for later in the year. Squatters moving in are the last thing I want to worry about.

Then again, I'm not sure why they would want to live here. If they tried panhandling, the sheriff would escort them out of town, plus there's really not much in the way of work they could do, especially in February.

For that matter, there's not much for them to do, period. I don't have cable, and streaming / internet in general isn't that great.

What if nobody seems to know that they are there, dozens of them in some instances per house?

What if the enemy of this nation DOES know that they are there and are in communications with them?

It's not hard here in California. You basically move into an empty house, move in your belongings, and start getting some mail there. If you know how to work the system you can live there for about six months once the evictions starts.

I couldn't do that. It's just so wrong on so many levels. I know those crooks squat, but it just leaves me shaking my head.

My house is my castle. I own it. No one is going to push me out of it, nor am I taking over someone else's castle.

Technically, by 'law'(not whats right or just), the State is the owner.

So this is why the State can get up into everyones business.(by consent)

Its your home you did not sign any agreement to a lease and my self do not buy into electric signature thing.
If the cops say they cannot do anything and that it's a civil matter then take things into your own hands and it's what you should have done in the first place, you go in and if need be break the door to get in and tell to leave now if they refuse you hit them with the club, pipe or bat your holding and the idea is to knock them to the ground and drag them outside then call the cops! You found these people had broken into your home while you were away and you went in to remove these people by force as they refused to leave my home1 It's your home you do not share it with the town, city, county state nor federal government it yours.

This was all over the news here in Atlanta over the weekend on TV and in the papers.

What BN said at the beginning is something I’ve thought about recently:

Were you considering a vacation? Don't.

There are two families in our home. We occasionally go on vacation together, and now I’m concerned with leaving our home.

Know your rights and restrictions as a property owner.

Most of these places are:
1. owned by investment groups
2. airbnb types places
3. second homes and/or are owned by inexperienced or lazy landlords who don't keep a unit rented which shouldn't be a problem in a place like Cali
4. are being "managed" by poorly run property management companies and owned by people that don't want to do the necessary hands on management of the people they hire

Mortgage defaults should start rising soon, too. People are already in a crack with their finances, and debt is soaring.

They won't need to "take over your house." The bank will have plenty of them just sitting empty anyway.

The larger urban areas have always had buildings where many people live under the radar; not all are crime dens. Oh, some illegal things going on, like that rave in the occupied warehouse in the Bay Area a few years ago, But many of the dozens of people who lived there were there because it was better than living in their car. Or, some residents did; they drove their cars in and made them part of their self-build "apartments." Of course, they violated every fire code you can imagine, and the results were tragic, but that type of warehouse living has gone on there for decades. Usually, the warehouses are owned by absentee landlords and rented out to someone like that one. Residents keep quiet about them because they don't want to live in tents. Many are employed in lower-wage or gig work, but it doesn't pay enough to rent anything near their jobs.

That said, I've been surprised there hasn't been more squatting in some places (like Detroit) full of abandoned buildings. One thing is for certain: if trends continue, a lot of dead malls, empty office buildings, and other places are likely to be targeted for the homeless. They may be somewhat protected by security now, but that won't be possible if things continue to break down.

As a child during the Great Depression, my mother lived in closets, garages, and National Park Cabins, none of which were legal. A mother will do almost anything to put a roof over her child's head and food in their mouth. Most people will do the same thing for themselves if they have no choice.

As my Mom said as far back as the Reaganvilles of the 1980s recession, "Back in my day, they didn't have the problem with drugs they do now. Alcohol was a problem, but not all the drugs."

That creates another chapter in this ongoing story, likely a gruesome one. Making it more challenging to help people who fall through the cracks because they can't afford to rent anywhere, have a health crisis, have a divorce, or are laid off.

But the problem is familiar, though it will likely get a lot worse before things improve.

You're thinking of an extremely violent encounter with home invaders when you were returning
from church. You are armed, as always, had to defend yourself, you were injured, as in visible
from the blood streaming down you head. You are the only one that survived this very violent attack,
you are obviously the victim here. And of course, talk slowly and be careful what you say......

Meemur they were dealing meth, raising pit bulls and threatening neighbors. A pregnant women called me crying and said they had threatened her with the pit bulls. The police wouldn’t do anything about it until I showed up with a chain saw becuase I needed to repair that door. They were out in two days. Threw a sofa through the living room window but nothing compared to the clean up. Got a nice couple with there little boys in the house and the sun rose again. Cops showed up just to be sure I didn’t hurt the meth dealers.

Amazing isn't it? The owner of a home can't get the squatters out. BUT a bank doesn't have any problem running the owners out when they default.

Not as true as it used to be. A lot of laws changed for foreclosure after 2007/2008. However, if the mortgage holder follows the law and correct documentation, then the court doesn't sit around on its hands.

You can't have it both ways. Property owners or those with financial interest in a property have rights, then those rights can't be taken away simply because someone feelz something is unfair. If I have a tenant that doesn't pay their rent on time and in full I have the right to evict them so long as I follow the law ... both the letter and intent. They can ask for a hearing but if they don't pay they are still out.

There are some nuanced situations, but it is pretty much the same for someone that holds a mortgage on a property, whether they are banks or not.

The problem here is that the owners don't behave like criminals, I guess.

But that's all right. God will repay. Or we're to be pitied more than any other person.

BREAKING: A woman gets arrested for removing squatters out of her $1,000,000 house in Queens, NY.

Adel Andaloro inherited her family's home in Flushing, Queens after her parents passed away and was in the process of selling it when she noticed that someone illegally moved in.

After she changed the lock the squatters came back and the police arrested her according to the NY landlord-tenant law.

If she was a good New Yorker, she would be housing illegals. Who does she think she is...

She lives in my neighborhood….we vote red, but we’re surrounded by a sea of blue. If you think this isn’t going to spread throughout America you’re not paying attention.

This is how it would have been handled 40 years ago, I'm not young but I still find myself being amazed at the current lack of testosterone in this country. My old man and his buddies would have beat the living shit out of someone who would have tried that crap on our house while growing up in the 70's.
