SOUTHERN BUTTERMILK PIE

What you will need:
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 tablespoons flour
3 eggs, beaten
1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
1 deep dish pie shell ( either your own recipe or storebought)

How to Make It:
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Beat the butter and sugar together until light.
Add the eggs and beat; then beat in vanilla.
Sift the dry ingredients together and add to the batter alternatively with the buttermilk; beat until smooth.
Pour into a deep dish pie shell and bake at 400F for 10 minutes, reduce heat to 350F and bake for 50-60 additional minutes.
Pie should turn a nice golden brown and a knife inserted should come out clean.
I think it is absolutely best when it is just still warm. (Not too hot, or it will be like napalm.)

My Grandmother was from West Texas, and she called this a Chess Pie, or Buttermilk Chess. I never found out why? This is one delicious recipe and was standard for all family get togethers.

can you freeze buttermilk and it taste ok after
Lol. Was wondering same thing yesterday. I believe you CAN but it will separate out and can’t remember what you do about that. Plain milk does the same but since all the fats aren’t there, I think the buttermilk has to be mixed longer. My mind. I should have taken better care. lol

It is called Chess pie because in the later Middle Ages into the 18th century it was often made with cheese and was Cheese Pie or that is what some of my food history books say anyway - sort of like a modern cheesecake in a crust, sort of.
