South Korea is preparing to conduct a live-fire artillery exercise in response to the recent North Korean coastal artillery provocation.

South Korean officials are describing it as a "show of force."

Depending on North Korea's next moves, this could spiral into a "tit-for-tat" situation.

South Korean forces were given permission to immediately return fire before having to report the incident to superiors.

There is fear that North Korea could return fire so residents on Yeonpyeong Island were ordered to stay near designated shelters.

The Reason for the Evacaution Order for Residents on Yeonpyeong Island is reportedly not because of the earlier Coast Artillery Fire by North Korea, but instead due to Radio Communications by North Korean Forces which have been Intercepted by South Korean Intelligence suggesting that they will Open-Fire against Settlements on the Island if the South Korean Military decided to Respond with Live-Fire Drills.

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ho-jun = When North Korea violated the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement on the 5th and conducted maritime fire near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea, our military also fired maritime fire in response.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the 6th Marine Brigade on Baengnyeong Island and the Yeonpyeong Unit on Yeonpyeong Island conducted maritime shooting training using K9 self-propelled howitzers and tank guns starting around 3 PM on this day.

This is the first time that Marine units deployed to the northwest islands have conducted maritime shooting training since the inter-Korean military agreement was signed on September 19, 2018.

Earlier on this day, the North Korean military mobilized coastal artillery and fired more than 200 rounds at sea in the area of Cape Jangsan, north of Baengnyeong Island, and Cape Saneong, north of Yeonpyeong Island.
The shell fired by the North Korean military landed in the western sea buffer zone north of the NLL.
The maritime buffer zone was established in the area of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West and East Seas to prevent armed conflict at sea in accordance with the September 19 Inter-Korean Military Agreement signed in 2018.It is a violation of the military agreement to conduct artillery fire and maritime maneuver training in the maritime buffer zone.

It has been one year and one month since the North Korean military conducted shooting training in the maritime buffer zone toward the East Sea in the Goseong and Geumgang areas of Gangwon-do on December 6, 2022.
Our military defined this shooting as a provocation in that North Korean artillery shells fell in the maritime buffer zone of the West Sea, and conducted maritime shooting exercises in response.

China calls for 'restraint' from all parties after North Korea shelling
AFP

China called Friday for “restraint” from all sides after Seoul said North Korea had fired an artillery barrage near two South Korean islands.

“Under the current situation, we hope that all relevant parties maintain calm and restraint, refrain from taking actions that aggravate tensions, avoid further escalation of the situation, and create conditions for the resumption of meaningful dialogue,” foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters.

Hours after the reported barrage, South Korean marines on the border island of Yeonpyeong conducted live-fire artillery drills, Yonhap news agency reported.

“We are paying close attention to developments and changes to the situation on the Korean Peninsula,” Wang added.

“Confrontations between relevant parties have intensified recently, and the situation on the peninsula continues to be tense.

“As a neighbour of the peninsula, China has always advocated maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula and resolving peninsula issues through dialogue and consultation.”

China’s close ties with North Korea were on show earlier this week when President Xi Jinping spoke by phone with his counterpart Kim Jong Un on New Year’s Day.

The conversation saw the two leaders declare 2024 as a “China-DPRK Friendship Year”, according to China’s state-run news agency Xinhua, using an acronym for North Korea’s official name.

“In recent years, Xi said, the traditional friendly cooperation between China and the DPRK has entered a new historical period with joint efforts,” Xinhua reported.

“Under the new situation in the new era, the (Communist Party of China) and the Chinese government have always viewed China-DPRK relations from a strategic and long-term perspective,” Xinhua added.

“It is China’s unwavering policy to maintain, consolidate and develop the long-standing friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.”
