Man in the Netherlands euthanised due to his alcohol addiction

Euthanasia for people in 'unbearable suffering' and no prospect of improvement is legal in the country

A man in the Netherlands has been allowed to die because he could no longer carry on living as an alcoholic.

Mark Langedijk chose the day of his death and was telling jokes, drinking beer and eating ham sandwiches with his family hours before he passed away.

He was killed by lethal injection at his parents’ home on 14 July, according to an account of the ordeal written by his brother and published in the magazine Linda.

The Netherlands introduced a euthanasia law 16 years ago, which is available to people in “unbearable suffering” with no prospect of improvement.

Marcel Langedijk wrote his brother had a “happy childhood” and was loved by both his parents, and only found out he had an addiction eight years ago.

“I was particularly angry at Mark,” he said. “At first we did what most people do; help. My parents especially have done everything humanly possible to save Mark.”

His parents continued to believe in a “happy ending” despite eight years of help and 21 stints in rehab.

Eventually, Mr Langedijk told his family he wanted to die, but the family originally took the news with “a grain of salt”.

But his brother had no second thoughts. His application for euthanasia was approved by a doctor from the Support and Consultation on Euthanasia in the Netherlands.

On the day of his death, he “laughed, drank, smoked, ate ham and cheese sandwiches and soup with meatballs” until his doctor arrived at his parents’ home at 3.15pm.

His doctor explained the procedure, before telling Mr Landedijk to get into bed and to stay calm.

At this point, they all “started crying, my parents, everyone actually, even Mark”.

“We cried, told each other that we loved each other, that it would be all right, that we would care for each other, that we would see each other again, we held each other,” he said. “If it was not so terrible, it would have been nice.

“Mark's eyes turned away, he sighed deeply. His last. Dr Marijke injected the third syringe. His face changed, lost color. My little brother was dead.”

More than 5,500 people ended their life using Holland’s euthanasia laws last year. One of those who died was a sex abuse victim who suffered severe anorexia, chronic depression and hallucinations.

Fiona Bruce, a Conservative MP, told the Daily Mail news of Mr Landedijk's death was "deeply concerning and yet another reason why assisted suicide and euthanasia must never be introduced into the UK".

“What someone suffering from alcoholism needs is support and treatment to get better from their addiction – which can be provided – not to be euthanised," she added.

“It is once again a troubling sign of how legalised euthanasia undermines in other countries the treatment and help the most vulnerable should receive.”

Responding to Mrs Bruce, Marcel Langedijk told the Independent: "You can close your eyes to it and keep telling yourself everyone is curable but the fact remains, not everyone is.

"My brother suffered from depression and anxiety and tried to 'cure' it with alcohol. He's from a normal family, he did not want this to happen. He did not take an easy way out. Just a humane one.

"If that's troubling for Mrs Bruce that's a pity. I am just glad my brother did not have to jump in front of a train or live a few more years in agony before dying of his abuse.

"Alcoholism and depression are illnesses, just like cancer. People who suffer from it need a humane way out.

"It's not like we go around killing people in Holland. It took my brother a year and a half and many struggles to get it done."

As long as a person of sound mind makes the choice to end their own life, I support that. The instant the government mandates it however, is when the line has been crossed.

I have heard that there were many botched suicide attempts where the person survived and the last thing on their mind was they had made a mistake in what they were attempting. specially, the article I read a while back was talking about jumpers from a high bridge, maybe Golden Gate, but at any rate they said a few survived and in the instant before they hit they regretting jumping.

I'm sure some people are in such agony they need to escape it but I think many people's state of mind might be temporary agony and things could get better.

I support a person's ability to make that choice but I hope they have thought it out well and don't end up making a mistake.

What we don't need is a Governmental entity making decisions based on a persons health or age. Putting caps on healthcare because of the costs and it is just not cost-effective to treat a person past a certain age or condition.
What we don't need are people like George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw quotes:

“You must all know half a dozen people at least who are no use in this world; who are more trouble than they are worth. Just put them there, and say, now sir or madam, now will you be kind enough to justify your existence? If you can’t justify your existence; if you’re not pulling your weight in the social boat; if you’re not producing as much as you consume or perhaps a little more, then clearly we cannot use the big organisation of our society for the purpose of keeping you alive, because your life does not benefit us, and it can’t be of very much use to yourself”.

Is this a surprise? People have been slipping on that slippery slope for a long time now. We justify the killing of unwanted babies so what's next? Justification of murdering one's own self.

And God? They ask, who's that and what right does HE have to give life and take it away? He can't help, nor would we want Him to. We are our OWN gods and our laws reflect that. (Of course, though He doesn't force us, when death comes He WILL look to see if you know him, which, will be kind of hard, if you've already pledged allegiance to another!!!)

The nazies advocated euthanasia as a tool of the state, to advance their eugenic principles. I agree with the OP, it is a slippery slope.

This is really a tough one but I think personally if I had some terminal illness and was dying a slow death I'd like the option to end things on my terms.

Maybe I'm wrong but in this case I don't think alcohol addiction should qualify since it should be curable.

I agree. Drugs and alcohol are a choice not a disease. To choose to end your life on any terms other then Gods, is suicide.

Although I can agree to one refusing to treatment to prolong death and misery, to assist in ones death is murder, plain and simple. There is a season for all of us to die, some sooner then others, but unless the are trying to harm my family I will not assist them. They can do it on their own.

The most basic human right is the right to choose whether or not to continue living.
If you don't have that, you have no rights.
Assisted suicide or do it yourself suicide kits should be available to adults.
Any adult should be allowed to make that decision for themselves if they are mentally competent. No medical authority, family member or government should be allowed to make that decision for them. The decision to die or not only belongs to the person concerned and nobody else.

Forcing those who want to kill themselves to use a bullet or poison or cutting their self is cruel and only traumatizes those around them who are force to see the mess.

Simplest way is to use a tank of compressed nitrogen. They make smaller ones you can buy or you can rent a large one from a welding supply shop. Connect it through a pressure regulator via a hose to a plastic bag or hood. Fill the bag or hood with nitrogen fasten it over your head and keep the nitrogen flowing into the bag. The CO2 you exhale is flushed from the hood and you have a continuous flow of nitrogen with no oxygen to breath normally.

There is no sense of struggling for air. You breath normally. Excess CO2 which causes the feeling of struggling to breath doesn't accumulate because nitrogen is constantly flowing into the plastic hood. You very quickly loose consciousness and quietly go to sleep and die in maybe 10 minutes with no sense of struggling for air.
Suicide kits are sold by various online groups. People first began using the inert gas helium, but helium balloon companies started putting 10% oxygen in the tanks. Nitrogen gas is the recommended gas to use.

Hell this should be used for state executions. It is safe and sure, with no struggling, no drugs, no injections, no electricity and burning flesh, and no mess.
Oh, it is also almost impossible or very difficult to detect this cause of death by a medical examiner.
Youtube and the internet have many sites with videos and directions

Here is video of a man committing assisted suicide in Switzerland. He has a disease that is slowly paralyzing all his muscles. He is using a fatal dose of barbiturates.

Here is another video of an older woman that does not have a terminal disease but chose to go to Switzerland to die.
It's a longer video and she fully explains her reasons and has her two friends with her when she passes.
