RUSSIA has announced a “successful” test of an unnamed new interceptor missile which the US has warned is capable of destroying Western satellites in low earth orbit.
The top secret weapon is believed to be designed to protect the Kremlin and key strategic sites around Moscow against air and space attacks.

But the US has previously warned of such Russian technological breakthroughs: “The threats to US space systems and [their] allies are real, serious and increasing.”
It comes as Russians today started three days of voting in key parliamentary elections preceded by unprecedented media curbs and the banning of a slew of opposition candidates.
It means parties loyal to Vladimir Putin - who is self-isolating after a Covid outbreak in his entourage - are expected to win a clear majority.
Putin’s liberal foes have urged a "smart voting" scheme to back parties such as the Communists to dent his expected triumph when results are declared on Sunday.
The latest drill involving the hi-tech system was carried out by Russia’s strategic missile forces at the Sary-Shagan test site in Kazakhstan.
Major General Sergey Grabchuk, commander of a missile defence unit of Russia’s aerospace Force, said: “The combat crews successfully coped with their task to hit the designated target, achieving the expected accuracy.”

He added they “reliably confirmed the expected parameters” of the weapon, which he did not name.
A video of the missile launch was also released.
State news agency Tass linked the test to “a missile defence system" designed for "protecting Moscow and the central industrial region”.
As with a similar announcement last year no detail was given about the missile’s precise performance in the test, or the target, and the weapon remains shrouded in secrecy.
Commander of the United States Space Command John Raymond said in April 2020 that such Russian extraterrestrial interceptor missiles pose a challenge to US interests in near space.
Raymond claimed this Russian system is capable of destroying satellites in low Earth orbit.
'HOSTILE ACTS'
Russia is known to be developing a mobile long-range extraterrestrial interceptor missile named 14Ts033 Nudol.
The two-stage 14Ts033 may be used on the new A-235 missile defence system, which is being developed to protect Moscow's airspace.
It can reach Mach 12, with a 620 mile range, say experts.
The missile is intended to destroy the warheads of intercontinental ballistic missiles and spacecraft in low Earth orbits.
Speaking about the Nudol system, Gen Raymond said: “The United States is ready and committed to deterring aggression and defending the nation, our allies, and US interests from hostile acts in space.”
The latest Russian missile test follows a frantic ten days of war games in four separate theatres.
Some 200,000 troops are taking part in the giant Zapad-2021 drills jointly with Belarus - whose dictator Alexander Lukashenko is buying $1bn of high-tech weapons from Russia.
Zapad - launched as a show of force on Europe's doorstep - also saw the unveiling of Russia's "Terminator" unmanned tank bristling with guns and rocket launchers.
Russia has also been staging war games with ex-Soviet allies to the north of Afghanistan, major exercises in the Arctic, and military manoeuvres in the far east.
The week Russia also announced it has delivered the state-of-the-art S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system to troops for the first time.
The S-500 can destroy any incoming Western hypersonic missiles including in near space, designers boast.
The US has been left playing catch-up as Russia develops a terrifying array of high-tech weaponry including "unstoppable" hypersonic nukes and a torpedo designed to unleash a radioactive tsunami.

“Satellite killer” weapons will never be used. At least those that “blast” satellites into bits. A single such explosion would probably make it impossible to have any satellites in orbit due to those bits of shrapnel traveling at high velocity.

Disagree - In war the purpose is to defeat the enemy. The aftereffects get dealt with after the war is over.

Its like your saying that you won't bomb a city because the resulting fires would cause climate change and contribute to global warming. Now I could believe that logic coming from our current leaders and woke military but I don't expect our enemys to follow that line of thinking.

Well there are hard kills that physically destroy the target, and soft or operational kills that don't completely physically destroy the target but render it inoperable, that can be done with the equivalent of a paint grenade t blind the sensors or frying it with enough heat or other band widths of radiation to cook its internals.

Truth. A soft kill pops the balloon and let’s the package fall to earth for gathering.

That is pretty impressive. That means my GPS won't work. That means I won't be able to find my way home. I am doomed!

That was then; this is now. A modern nation MUST be able to use satellites. Up until Korea, that wasn’t the case.

America's strength and weakness is its reliance on technology. You knock out the satellites and you've knocked out navagation , communications, and a host of other things. Can our fighter jets and cruise missiles fly in a usable manner without gps? Can our ships sail at sea using old school navigation methods? I don't know

Computer hacking from over the internet has proven that they can shut down a major pipeline system supplying the eastern seaboard with fuel. I'm guessing the electric grid could just as easily taken down. Cell service. Fiber optic cables. Then how hard would it be to actually take down the internet which would basically shut down the economy.

So if I were fighting a war with the US I wouldn't be concerned with junking up space as I would figure that I could survive the loss of gps and comms better then the US could.

Space terrorism, area denial, if one is losing the space race make sure no can use it.

Our domestic commies will be murdering us long before the evil Russians ever will.

Same old Troke. Never seeing the bigger picture. It also means that aircraft wouldn’t be able to navigate. Same for ships. Same for military units. No big deal, right?

It all fun and games until they have to try and drag a fiber cable across the Atlantic to make a phone call to Europe.

Lose GPS, cell systems get really kinked.

Many other systems use it for timing and various other functions.

It ain't all about where something is.

I suspect toys like this have been around for years. I suspect Russia would have a greater reason to use them, as such target practice would lead to retaliation making all satellites history. Or as Dennis said, the high velocity shrapnel could take out others.

But the point I'm getting to, is the GPS reliance we have. How many of our troops can use a compass, map and sextant? Not to mention all the other satellite dependencies we have, such as communication. I have a feeling the Ruskies have enough old school technology navigation and communication goodies around to still have an effective army.

I have this sick feeling that with the weaknesses given to us by the stolen election, with the woke in charge, our asses are the grass and the Russians and Chinese are the lawn mowers. I'd like to say "Heaven help us all", but you got to be dead before Heaven can help, and the Russians and Chinese will see to it we get all the help from Heaven possible.

This isn't all that major a news story. Anyone who can launch a moderately sized payload into orbit could probably pull it off (assuming they have the computing skill to match orbits). Heck, India apparently has their own anti-satellite missile system.

I disagree that a few satellite destruction missions would jeopardize LEO for everyone else. Even in LEO space is a hell of a lot bigger than you might think. People may think what they see in movies represents the real thing, but it doesn't. If you were physically in space and with your own unaided eyes saw anything else in orbit as anything other than a moving dot of light (excepting the Moon but including the International Space Station), that would probably be considered an extremely close call. Same thing in the Asteroid Belt. It ain't the movies out there.

I have to solidly disagree. Bear in mind that until the 0bunghole regime, I was right there with you. Since then however, we’ve been turned into a quasi-communist country by the dems. And the “quasi” is fast being removed. Thus, the Russkies and Chinks can just sit back and smile, as we turn the USA into the USSA. They don’t have to fire a single shot in anger or lose a single soldier.

They must be laughing their commie asses off.

We are almost there now. See Kessler effect - The Kessler syndrome and space debris - Space Legal Issues

But militarily speaking, space is the high ground, and the high ground is always contested. Look at what we did to Monte Cassino in Italy in WW2 - my dad was there.
