Russia to cull half almost a million fowl to fight bird flu

Russia's veterinary service announced plans to destroy 460,000 fowl in a bid to wipe out the deadly bird flu virus that has afflicted parts of Siberia.

The cull would be carried out in the west Siberian province of Kurgan, the head of the province's veterinary service, Nikolai Petrenko, was quoted by the ITAR-TASS state news agency as saying.

"The liquidation of livestock will be carried out" on Monday, Petrenko said.

Separately, the agriculture ministry said that 17 districts in the Siberian region of Novossibirsk remained under observation for suspected bird flu.

Quarantine procedures had been lifted in other areas previously struck by bird flu, the ministry said.
