Ukraine was initially bragging about shooting down the Russian jet, thinking it was cargo load from Iran of drones. When the Russian minister of defense gave the report, the Z team got stupid quiet... but blamed the Russians.

Well, if you don't announce that the aircraft is full of PoWs, as the Japanese didn't when shipping PoWs back to Japan, these things can happen.

So, what's the low altitude slant range on a Patriot missile used as a surface to air missile? I think that's the only thing Ukraine has that has the range and tracking capabilities to do the shoot down.

Here's info on the IL-76MD. It's not an old plane-plane was most likely 4-5 years old. Another thing-the MD has a sensor suite to detect airborne threats. Either it was disabled or defeated (frequency agile seekers on the missile perhaps?) The engines on the plane are the same as the IL-96 airliner.

The plane got shot down some distance inside Belgorod Oblast. Northeast of Belgorod city, near Yablonovo. IE out in the boonies Russian style. Residential, in Soviet times the dachas around there had gardens attached-so the people could eat.

The Russian prisoners to be swapped were already at the swap location. Whoever on the Ukranian side gave the order to shoot has the blood of 65 of their countrymen on their hands. And they have used yet another ABM defense Patriot missile as a SAM. At a million bucks a missile.

They were scheduled to be replaced on January 24th
MOSCOW, January 26./ The Prisoner of War Coordination Staff, which is subordinate to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, has confirmed that the exchange of 65 soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the list circulating on social networks is actually scheduled for January 24 was planned. This was reported by the press service of the ministry.
“The Coordination Headquarters confirms that 65 Ukrainian defenders from this list are indeed scheduled to be returned to Ukraine as part of the planned exchange on January 24,” it said in a statement on Facebook.
The staff clarified that it concerns the list that was published on Russian sites.
On January 24, Ukrainian armed forces shot down a Russian Il-76 military transport aircraft carrying Ukrainian prisoners over the Belgorod region who were supposed to be exchanged. The Russian Defense Ministry described the incident as an act of terrorism and stressed that Kiev knew about the prisoner transport and attacked the plane in order to accuse Moscow of killing Ukrainian soldiers. There were a total of 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war on board the IL-76, all of whom were killed.
On the same day, Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the Rossiya Segodnya media group, shared on her Telegram channel a photo of a list with the data of Ukrainian soldiers that should be exchanged.
At the same time, Dmitry Peskov, the Russian president's press secretary, said that he was not aware of the official publication of this list.

Wonder who made the shot, the French, British or USA?

The Ukrainians. With an American made Patriot being used as a SAM. I'd be curious to see who had an ELINT bird up on the Ukranian side.
