FOOD Rice in a crock pot?

I have a crock pot and I want to use raw rice.
Can I cook rice added with cooked canned meat and other things. Will raw rice cook properly in a crock pot stew and if it will cook give me some idea of the times involved.

I hate to have to use a rice cooker then add it to a crock pot dish. I want to use it and toss the raw rice in with the other foods but I have no idea of the cooking time involved to get the rice cooked properly.

How to Add Rice to a Crock Pot Recipe

Using a crock pot is a great way to prepare a meal in the morning and come home to a delicious slow-cooked dish. If the recipe you are using calls for rice, however, you'll need to add it close to the end of the cooking time. Otherwise, the rice will get overcooked and soggy. Keep reading for instructions on adding rice to a crock pot recipe.

Hello RCSAR,

If the meat is canned then it is already cooked, so you could go ahead and add the rice in the beginning.

If the beef is raw, cook the meat in the crock pot first, then add the rice about an hour before the beef is done, that way it has plenty of time to cook and not be over cooked.

I hope this helps!

Well, it all depend on how much rice & water you add. The more you add the longer it will take to cook. You can not go wrong putting it in 2 hours before the end of the cooking time.

Just go by the directions on the link I posted.

Thank you!
I assume the same can be said for pasta.
Will read more and educate myself.

Rice cooks by an absorption method. If you add chopped vegetables to rice it will cook in the same time as without the vegs added (brown rice - boil to full absorb with correct amt of water = 35 mins then leave lid on for further 15 mins to complete absorption for fluffy brown rice).

I spoke to a woman yesterday who does her rissoto in a pressure cooker in 8 mins using white poison (white rice). I do my sticky brown rice in a pressure cooker without the weight over the pressure vent for 35 mins using 1/2 inch of water to cover rice, no salt.

Now, rice in a slow cooker? Don't use a lot of rice, but it will still end up mushy. Cook it separately, not in a slow cooker. Water and rice on the stove to boil, simmer when boiled, simmer (brown rice) for 35 mins, turn off heat, leave lid on for further 15 mins. Not hard to do. Then add rice to whatever or serve separately.

If you have an electric rice cooker....I use it all the time to cook chicken or other meats vegetables & soups or seasonings along with the rice while it is cooking...a complete meal in less than an hour! You can accomplish what I think you want to do in the rice cooker because it boils quickly and cooks to a temperature gage, then pops off when finished. In otherwords white rice cooks shorter time than brown rice and couscous cooks shorter time than any grain. The on button pops up when the content is done no matter the contents.
