I have here a gift that a friend brought me from a trip to the Caribbean. It is a 2.2lb can of "Tastee Cheese Pasteurized Processed Cheese Spread". Actually, he brought me two and I am sacrificing one for this review (and perhaps several weeks of cheese and crackers, if it's any good).
The can claims the following:
* Made with granular cheese
* Product of Jamaica
* Keep refrigerated after opening
* Ingredients: Cheddar cheese (milk solids, water, bacterial culture), sodium phosphate, salt, nisin (preservative), colored with annatto extract.
* Serving size 2tbsp
* Servings per container 33
* Calories 100
* Calories from fat 70
* Total fat 8g
* Saturated fat 6g
* Cholesterol 20mg
* Sodium 420mg
* Total carbohydrates 0g
* Protein 6g
* Vitamin A 10%
* Iron 15%
* Calcium 15%
* Exp. 10 Nov 2007
This is a large can - same diameter as a number 10 can, but about 1/3rd the height.
On opening, I find the cheese is wrapped in what appears to be waxed paper within the can. The cheese is very orange - like US cheddar cheese or american cheese.
The cheese is soft, like American cheese - not as hard as cheddar. Not soft like a spread though, I can slice it and it retains its shape. It seems to grate reasonably well. On a piece of toast in the toaster, it melts just like I would expect.
OK - taste test time...
Straight out of the can, it is quite a bit like American cheese, but not as bland. There is a definite cheddar taste, but it is very mild. The consistency is OK, but the cheese is quite moist (again, like American cheese). I prefer the somewhat drier consistency of hard cheddar, but this is OK.
Melted, it is fine. It makes a reasonably tasty (or is it tastee?) cheese sandwich.
Overall, I give it a "not bad". It is not as good as the little Kraft cans available from Internet Grocer, but it is decent.
A quick search of the 'net turned up a few places that seem to sell it mail order in the US. Might be something to keep in mind for preps.
