Just thought I would let those interested know that I bought the new Better Homes & Garden magazine that is out on the newsstand right now called Canning. It is one of the special interest magazines and comes out once or twice a year.
What I didn't like:
What I liked:
Yeah, my husband winces and pretends not to see when I bring home another recipe book or magazine but a girls gotta have a hobby and since he benefits from my hobby he doesn't complain ... too much anyway. LOL
But as far as magazines go this one has been worth the investment. If you don't want to pay that much for it see if your local library has it or go to a Barnes and Noble and just sit for a while and peruse it. I found it worth my while.
What I didn't like:
- Dang thing would have cost me $10 if I hadn't had a special coupon and gotten it at wallyworld.
- Like any magazine the binding isn't going to hold up with years of use, unlike a book with the same content.
What I liked:
- It covered all four major preservation techniques: canning, pickling, freezing, and drying.
- It wasn't just basic info
- The recipes aren't just the traditional ones that you see in almost every publication. There are a couple of those but thankful that isn't the majority
- I made the Green Tomato and Pineapple Chutney is absolutely fantastic.
- Another good recipe is the Roast Tomato and Garlic Pizza Sauce
- New pickle flavor I've never see: Jamaican Jerk Pickle Chips
- Blueberry Mojito Jam came out to die for and I've already used one jar in a gift basket.
- The Golden Salsa Jam uses the low-sugar pectin which my dad can have small amounts of and because it uses yellow tomatoes instead of red ones their neighbors can eat it as well ... the red tomatoes have too much acid for their conditions so that's another gift basket idea right there.
- I'm dying to try the Strawberry and Gingerale Jam recipe, I just haven't had the time yet.
- My son in law is begging me to try the Sriracha-Style Asian Chili Sauce ... he is into all things hot, the hotter the better. Pretty surprising for a red head.
- I was naughty and tried the Honey-Brandy Preserved Grapes ... they're mine ... mine, mine, mine, allllllll mine.
- And when the time is right I will definitely be making the Tangerine Sweet Potato Butter. That one is going to be mine too. LOL
- Green Tea Chai Spiced Peaches and Spicy Ginger Red Hot Pears? I'm all over the two of them as well.
- Etc. Etc. Etc.
