The Library of Congress is collaborating with Captain Underpants author and illustrator Dav Pilkey to create weekly videos for kids (and adults!) who might want to try their hand at drawing while we’re social distancing at home.

Starting Wednesday April 1, the Library will release videos and other downloadable activities on its website and social media feeds. The content is free and accessible to the public. Activities include tips for creating your own characters or acting out scenes from Dog Man, which is part of the Underpants universe and focuses on a half-man, half-dog police officer.

On Friday mornings at 8 AM, Pilkey will release new videos with drawing demonstrations, reading aloud, and more. Hopefully this means you’ll hear Pilkey himself sing out Captain Underpants’ catchphrase, “Tra la laaaa!”

LeVar Burton Reading Goodnight Moon to Neil deGrasse Tyson Is as Awesome as You'd Expect

Goodnight Moon is without question the pinnacle of bedtime stories. But even if you've read Margaret Wise Brown's most famous book cover to cover a thousand times, you've probably never heard it read quite like this.

Like any great stories, it started with an innocuous tweet:

And who answered Neil deGrasse Tyson's call? LeVar Burton, of course; and the result did not disappoint.

The now viral video has racked up over 100,000 views since it's release on Oct. 7, and we completely understand why. Who wouldn't love to curl up with a blanket and drift off to sweet dreams listening to LeVar Burton's velvety voice reading the classic story line by line? The answer is no one.

Hearst Castle Is Launching a Digital Learning Program for Elementary Students
Third to fifth graders can get a virtual history lesson of the castle and its pioneering architect, Julia Morgan.

Exploring California's Hearst Castle

GEORGE ROSE

Like many landmarks across the country, Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California, remains closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But for elementary school students, who have been unable to attend school for weeks now, it will opens its doors—digitally, of course—for a home learning program that will delve into the history of the castle and its architect, Julia Morgan.

GEORGE ROSE

In 1919, media baron William Randolph Hearst commissioned Morgan, who was California's first licensed woman architect, to build a sprawling estate that he would call La Cuesta Encantada (Spanish for "The Enchanted Hill"). Done up in Spanish-style architecture, the 165-room mansion is surrounded by 127 acres of gardens, pools, and terraces. And then there's the view: the estate's 1,600 foot elevation affords it the most commanding views of the Pacific.

Hearst had to leave his castle in 1947 due to his failing health and a decade later, his family donated the property to the state of California. Today, the state park welcomes more than 700,000 visitors a year.

This learning program, which is meant for third to fifth graders and takes place March 31 at 1 p.m. PST, will incorporate STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and take students through the 28 years of Hearst Castle's realization, from conception to construction. Pre-registration is required, and is limited to the first 500 participants. Register here.

For older kids (grades 9-12), there is another Hearst Castle learning program on April 2 at 12 p.m. PST that will explore the castle's architecture and extensive art collection, as well as pull back the curtain on William Randolph Hearst. Other California state parks are also offering learning programs through PORTS (Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students), from exploring Point Lobos near Monterey to focusing on the indigenous cultures of northern California. For the full schedule and registration details, visit ports-ca.us.

This Museum Is Asking People to Remake Famous Artworks With Household Items
The Getty Museum hopes its social media challenge will spark inspiration amid the COVID-19 pandemic

MARCH 31, 2020

Despite museums closing their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are still finding ways to feel artistically inspired from the comfort of their homes.

Last week, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles sent out a tweet asking individuals self-isolating at home to recreate their favorite pieces of artwork. But there’s a catch: Participants must make their masterpieces using everyday household items.

After days of being cooped up inside, members of the public proved more than willing to accept the challenge, responding with personalized remakes of pieces by the likes of Paul Cézanne, Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso. Some stay-at-home artists pulled from their stashes of coronavirus supplies (rolls of toilet paper and coffee filters, for instance), while others enlisted the help of their pets, children’s toys and even that morning’s breakfast toast to remake the perfect portrait.
Van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh's Irises, 1889, (left) and recreation by Cara Jo O’Connell and family using Play Doh, carrot slices and wooden beads (right) (Courtesy of the J. Paul Getty Museum)

The Getty’s challenge was inspired by a similar online event presented by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam earlier this month. So far, the Los Angeles museum has received thousands of submissions, no two the same.

“There’s a really great one where a woman took an ancient Greek sculpture and recreated it to a tee by posing with a canister vacuum,” says Annelisa Stephan, the Getty’s assistant director for digital content strategy. “There have been thousands of amazing ones. … Some of them are brilliant artistically, but they’re all just really funny.”

Other standouts, adds Stephan, include a version of the Louvre’s Winged Victory of Samothrace made with an energy drink and a ripped-up subway receipt and a remake of Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory featuring a peanut placed on a Brillo pad.

In other words, pretty much anything goes. Artists can select images from the Getty’s online photo archive, which contains two million images from the museum’s massive collection of paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures. Self-Portrait, Yawning, by Joseph Ducreux and American Gothic by Grant Wood are proving to be two of the most popular sources of inspiration.

Vacuum Lady

To help get people’s artistic juices flowing, the Getty has published a helpful guide offering tips on how to choose an artwork; orient a subject in the best light; and, finally, share on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook using the hashtags #betweenartandquarantine and #tussenkunstenquarataine.

The challenge arrives as communities around the globe grapple to hold themselves together during a pandemic that is unlike anything most people have witnessed in their lifetimes.

“The heartening part of this is not just the creations, but how generous and kind people are in the comment [sections] by holding each other up,” says Stephan. “When [the Getty] was thinking about what we could do during this time when so many museums are closed, it seemed to us that what art could really offer is a sense of community.”

Explains Stephan, “Being at home, people are feeling isolated, so this has been a fun way to have a community not only with friends and family, but also with friendly strangers on the web. It’s really an attempt to build community around art for people who love art and appreciate it, whether or not you’re an artist.”

San Diego Zoo Academy offers eight weeks of free classes
Posted: April 1, 2020

KUSI Newsroom
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – For the next eight weeks, middle and high school teachers and students can gain access to 22 free, self-paced online courses through the San Diego Zoo covering a variety of taxonomic groups and individual animal species.

Offered by the San Diego Zoo Global Academy, the interactive courses are designed to be completed by students in as little as one to two hours. They include video, images and quizzes to teach students about mammals, birds, reptiles, monotremes and more.

“The urgent nature of San Diego Zoo Global’s work to save species is unchanged, even in the face of this pandemic,” said Paul A. Baribault, president and CEO of San Diego Zoo Global.

“Due to the long-term support of our community, we are able to continue our efforts even though our parks are closed,” he said. “Offering academic options for students and teachers allows us to give back to the community during this challenging time.”

Beginning Wednesday, new animal species online learning modules will be made available each week — and will remain online through May 24.

The first week of free courses begins with an overview of cats and lessons on cheetahs, lions and tigers.

“Our organization continues to be a lifeline connecting wildlife and people,” said Jon Prange, director of the San Diego Zoo Global Academy. “We hope that by sharing our knowledge and love for the natural world, we may inspire a deep respect for nature and pass on to younger generations the importance of conserving species in order to create a healthy ecological balance.”

To access the free courses, students are only required to enter their name, email address and school, while teachers are asked to enter the grades they teach.

The online learning modules were originally created for animal care professionals, as well as students at colleges and universities. However, the animal species series is designed to make learning fun, even if students are homebound.

Visit Collabornation.net/register/sdzk12 to sign up for the courses.

J.K. Rowling Launches Harry Potter Website to Help Kids Learn at Home

By Bayani Miguel Acebedo | More ArticlesStar Wars nerd. Toy collector. Occasional Cosplayer.
April 01, 2020 01:05 PM

While quarantine and isolation can be tough on adults, it certainly is also tough for little kids; and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has launched a website to help young witches and wizards get through the boredom of being stuck at home.
As per The Wrap, Rowling has launched harrypotterathome.com which will be filled with quizzes, videos, puzzles, and other fun things for kids to do. The site promises to ‘cast a banishing charm to boredom!’ Here’s the intro on the home page:

We know that everyone is trying to keep safe at home at the moment and so, with J.K. Rowling and our friends at Audible, Bloomsbury, OverDrive, Pottermore Publishing and Scholastic, we are delighted to introduce Harry Potter At Home to help children, parents, carers and teachers add a touch of Harry Potter magic to our new daily lives.

It’s also said that the first Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone/Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone will be available for free this month as an audiobook; so you can jump on that chance right now on Audible or the Overdrive library app.

Harry Potter was probably one of the biggest pop-culture franchises to Millenials, and I’m really curious on how the story is being taken in by a younger generation. Sure Fantastic Beasts may not have been the hit we were expecting, but the books seem to be timeliness no matter what age you are.

Visit Harry Potter at Home today.

Nikon has made its entire curriculum of online photography classes free until the end of April.

Now through April 30th, all 10 classes available at the Nikon School can be streamed for free. The classes are normally priced anywhere between $15 to $50 each.

Each class is taught by a professional photographer and provides in-depth lessons to help you get better at taking photos. Some courses cover Nikon-specific products, but many of them teach you the fundamentals of photography, such as a course that teaches you how to photograph your children or pets or the basics of making a music video. So even if you don’t own a Nikon camera, many of these classes might still be worth a watch.

If you’re interested in streaming the courses, you can do so by going to Nikon’s official website. You will need to sign up by entering your name and email address before you can view the classes, but you can opt out of receiving marketing emails.

Here are 450 Ivy League courses you can take online right now for free

The 8 Ivy League schools are among the most prestigious colleges in the world. They include Brown, Harvard, Cornell, Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, and Columbia universities, and the University of Pennsylvania.

All eight schools place in the top fifteen of the U.S. News and World Report national university rankings.

These Ivy League schools are also highly selective and extremely hard to get into. But the good news is that all these universities now offer free online courses across multiple online course platforms.

So far, they’ve created over 500 courses, of which around 450 are still active. Class Central has made a collection of all these, which you can explore below. I’ve split these courses into the following categories:
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Programming
  • Humanities

‘Zoom is malware’: why experts worry about the video conferencing platform

The company has seen a 535% rise in daily traffic in the past month, but security researchers say the app is a ‘privacy disaster’

As coronavirus lockdowns have moved many in-person activities online, the use of the video-conferencing platform Zoom has quickly escalated. So, too, have concerns about its security.

In the last month, there was a 535% rise in daily traffic to the Zoom.us download page, according to an analysis from the analytics firm SimilarWeb. Its app for iPhone has been the most downloaded app in the country for weeks, according to the mobile app market research firm Sensor Tower. Even politicians and other high-profile figures, including the British prime minister, Boris Johnson, and the former US federal reserve chair Alan Greenspan, use it for conferencing as they work from home.

4000.jpg

Coronavirus and app downloads: what you need to know about protecting your privacy

But security researchers have called Zoom “a privacy disaster” and “fundamentally corrupt” as allegations of the company mishandling user data snowball.

On Monday, New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, sent a letter to the company asking it to outline the measures it had taken to address security concerns and accommodate the rise in users.

In the letter, James said Zoom had been slow to address security vulnerabilities “that could enable malicious third parties to, among other things, gain surreptitious access to consumer webcams”.

A spokesman from Zoom told the Guardian on Wednesday it was planning to send James the requested information and comply with the request. “Zoom takes its users’ privacy, security, and trust extremely seriously,” the spokesman said.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, we are working around the clock to ensure that hospitals, universities, schools and other businesses across the world can stay connected and operational.”

And on Thursday, the company announced it would freeze all new feature development and shift all engineering resources on to security and safety issues that have been called to attention in recent weeks.

Here’s what you need to know about the challenges with Zoom:

‘Zoom bombing’ on the rise
On 30 March, the FBI announced it was investigating increased cases of video hijacking, also known as “Zoom-bombing”, in which hackers infiltrate video meetings, often shouting racial slurs or threats.

Zoom meetings can be accessed by a short number-based URL, which can easily be generated and guessed by hackers, a January report from the security firm Checkpoint found. Zoom has released guidelines in recent days about how to prevent unwanted guests from crashing video meetings and a spokesman told the Guardian it had also been working to educate its users on protections through blogposts and webinars.

No end-to-end encryption

Zoom has falsely advertised itself as using end-to-end encryption, a system that secures communication so that it can only be read by the users involved, a report from the Intercept found. Zoom confirmed in a blogpost on Wednesday that end-to-end encryption was not currently possible on the platform and apologized for the “confusion” it caused by “incorrectly” suggesting the opposite.

Security flaws

A number of security flaws affecting Zoom have been reported in the past and as recently as this week. In 2019, it was revealed Zoom had quietly installed a hidden web server on user devices that could allow the user to be added to a call without their permission. And a bug discovered this week would enable hackers to take over a Zoom user’s Mac, including tapping into the webcam and hacking the microphone.

The company said on Thursday it had issued a release to fix the Mac issue, but the number of security issues with Zoom in the past make it as bad as malicious software, said Arvind Narayanan, an associate computer science professor at Princeton University.

“Let’s make this simple,” he said. “Zoom is malware.”

In-app surveillance measures

Zoom has been criticized for its “attention tracking” feature, which allows a host to see if a user clicks away from a Zoom window for 30 seconds or more.

This feature would allow employers to check if employees are really tuned into a work meeting or if students are really watching a classroom presentation remotely.

Selling user data

A report from Motherboard found Zoom sends data from users of its iOS app to Facebook for advertising purposes, even if the user does not have a Facebook account.

Zoom changed some of its policies in response and said on Thursday that the company “has never sold user data in the past and has no intention of selling users’ data going forward”. But the Motherboard story was cited in a lawsuit filed in a federal court in California this week, accusing Zoom of failing to “properly safeguard the personal information of the increasing millions of users” on its platform.

This privacy flaw was also mentioned in the letter from James, which noted such privacy violations could be of particular concern as schools migrate to Zoom for class.

“While Zoom has remediated specific reported security vulnerabilities, we would like to understand whether Zoom has undertaken a broader review of its security practices,” the letter said.

Membership Revoked
Here is a good one. Most people here hopefully have heard of the American Heritage Girls organization. It's a Christian alternative to the (hack spit) Girl Scouts, and is now VERY well-organized. Their troops AFAIK are not meeting now, but they *DO* have a program for girls that are unable to attend regular troop meetings. While intended for military dependents and missionaries overseas, in areas where no troop is nearby, those with medical/transportation problems, etc., it seems highly suited for girls locked down at home due to the Coronavirus.

Here is the link to that program:

"The Trailblazer Program is an exciting avenue to experience the AHG Program. Girls are able to work one-on-one with their mentor (parent, guardian, minister, or teacher) to provide endless opportunities for them to grow into a woman of integrity while enjoying faith, service, and fun! Although AHG believes that its program is best delivered in a Troop setting, girls have the opportunity to experience faith, service, and fun through the Trailblazer Program! When families face steep obstacles to joining an AHG Troop, the Trailblazer Program is a wonderful alternative. Obstacles to being in a Troop may include:

  • living abroad as either a military, civilian, or missionary family
  • living more than a 60-minute drive from an AHG Troop meeting location
  • having a disability or condition that limits a girl’s ability to attend a Troop meeting
ahg-trailblazers

The Trailblazer Program allows families a means to independently participate in the AHG Program. As all Trailblazer family situations are unique, the program allows for minor adaptations to fulfill the AHG Mission. In the Trailblazer Program, one girl or a set of sisters are mentored by the adult age 21 or older who meets AHG’s adult membership requirements* and agrees to serve as the girl’s Trailblazer Mentor. The Mentor is coached through the program by dedicated AHG Staff and also has 24/7 access to online resources and training. Girls in the Trailblazer Program enjoy:

  • badge work
  • service and faith
  • patriotic activities
  • leadership opportunities
  • outdoor adventure
  • grow in confidence"

Their site's home page:

===================================================

Some stuff about them:

"Changing Girls’ Lives and Leading Them Towards a More Christ-Centered Life.
American Heritage Girls (AHG) was founded by a group of parents wanting a faith-based, scout-type character development program for their daughters in 1995. The AHG Program is dedicated to the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country. AHG girls across the nation and the globe participate in badge programs, service projects, leadership opportunities, and outdoor experiences, all with an emphasis on Christian values and family involvement.

Today there are Troops in every state and in 15 countries around the world through the Trailblazer Program. A variety of Christian denominations are also represented as Charter Organizations for Troops. There are thousands of volunteer members across the country helping girls to grow in their faith, cultivate a heart for service, enjoy the great outdoors, and have more fun than they can imagine!"

"American Heritage Girls was founded around a kitchen table in 1995 by a group of parents living in a northern suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. Their frustration with the way their beloved scouting organization was handling matters of faith and culture led to a vision of a fun-filled, Christ-centered, service-oriented, outdoor emphasized educational opportunity for girls. This new Christian organization would contribute to the betterment of each girl’s community while strengthening her walk with Christ. American Heritage Girls was born from this vision, along with a healthy helping of tears and prayer. The very first AHG Troop was made up of a wonderful group of 4th and 5th-grade girls.

ahg-history-300x203.jpg

Later, Troops began appearing across the country as the news of a Christ-centered, faith-based program spread. AHG leadership went from a handful of parents around a table volunteering their time and rotating the monthly phone bill to make ends meet to a large office space with a staff of over 50 today.

Small seeds of hope grew into mighty oaks of tradition. AHG experienced a substantial membership increase in 2010 when they became the first all-girl program to partner with the Boy Scouts of America, a partnership that later ended when BSA changed their membership standards. Parents clamored for a BSA alternative, and AHG used their resources to help connect and mobilize these parents to form a faith-based scouting-type program for boys known as Trail Life USA.

In the ensuing years, American Heritage Girls has continued to grow with the help and support of a nationwide network of parents who share the goal of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country.

By the grace of God, tens of thousands have been reached and served by the AHG Ministry over the years. Today, the need for a Christian organization with a strong program that helps girls develop their gifts and skills and grow in the knowledge of who they are and whose they are in Christ is stronger than ever.

Whether you’re the parent of a brand-new kindergartner or a teenage girl navigating the ever-changing world of high school, American Heritage Girls is excited by the opportunity to come alongside parents like you to raise Godly girls. Our world desperately requires a generation of women who know who they are and whose they are in Christ. The AHG Program is at the forefront of this urgent need, teaching girls the incredible God-given worth that lies within them."
=======================================================

"American Heritage Girls is a Christ-centered leadership and character development ministry. The following Statement of Faith applies to all American Heritage Girls’ Charter Organizations and Adult Members.

“We believe that there is one Triune God–Father; Jesus Christ, His one and only Son; and the Holy Spirit–Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired and authoritative Word of God. We believe each person is created in His image for the purpose of communing with and worshipping God. We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Who enables us to live godly lives. We believe that each individual is called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength; and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We believe God calls us to lives of purity, service, stewardship, and integrity.”

Clarity is further provided to the following terms:

  • Purity–God calls us to lives of holiness, being pure of heart, mind, word, and deed. We are to reserve sexual activity to the sanctity of marriage; a lifelong commitment before God between a man and a woman.
  • Service–God calls us to become responsible members of our community and the world through selfless acts that contribute to the welfare of others.
  • Stewardship–God calls us to use our God-given time, talents, and money wisely.
  • Integrity–God calls us to live moral lives that demonstrate an inward motivation to do what is right, regardless of the cost."

Easter: Andrea Bocelli will stream a special live concert at Duomo di Milano on Easter Sunday in a bid to send 'love, healing and hope' to Italy amid the COVID-19 crisis

The Milan cathedral is currently closed amid the pandemic but will exclusively open its doors for just Bocelli and organist Emanuel for the event hosted by Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo - a 600-year-old organisation which supervises the building.

The singer will be without an audience due to Italy's lockdown and government regulations surrounding COVID-19 but the footage will be streamed live to his YouTube channel.

Talking about the incredible opportunity, Bocelli said: 'On the day on which we celebrate the trust in a life that triumphs, I'm honoured and happy to answer "Sì" to the invitation of the City and the Duomo of Milan.'

The opera singer added: 'I believe in the strength of praying together; I believe in the Christian Easter, a universal symbol of rebirth that everyone – whether they are believers or not – truly needs right now.

'Thanks to music, streamed live, bringing together millions of clasped hands everywhere in the world, we will hug this wounded Earth's pulsing heart, this wonderful international forge that is reason for Italian pride.

'The generous, courageous, proactive Milan and the whole of Italy will be again, and very soon, a winning model, engine of a renaissance that we all hope for.
'It will be a joy to witness it, in the Duomo, during the Easter celebration which evokes the mystery of birth and rebirth.'

Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, said: 'I am happy Andrea has accepted our invitation. This year, Easter will be very different for all of us. The joyous serenity that usually comes with this day, has been greatly troubled by the pandemic we are experiencing.
Performance: Bocelli will only be accompanied by Duomo di Milano's organist, Emanuele Vianelli, where he shall perform the likes of Ave Maria and Sancta Maria

Performance: Bocelli will only be accompanied by Duomo di Milano's organist, Emanuele Vianelli, where he shall perform the likes of Ave Maria and Sancta Maria

'I am sure that the extraordinary voice of Bocelli will be the embrace we are missing these days, a strong, special hug, capable of warming the heart of Milan, Italy and the world.'

Archpriest of Duomo di Milano, Monsignor Gianantonio Borgonovo, added: 'Our 'Hallelujah' is an invitation that we placed in the ark forty days ago and that the flood, which has overwhelmed us all, almost made us forget the joy of expressing it on the day of Easter.

'The voice and word of Andrea Bocelli reminds us that the reason for our hope does not come from us but it is a gift that comes from God.
Lockdown: The singer will be without an audience due to Italy's lockdown and government regulations surrounding COVID-19 but the footage will be streamed live to his YouTube channel (police pictured outside the cathedral in Milan on Monday)

'This is what it means to promote, from our Duomo - the home of the people of Milan - and through the voice of Bocelli, the confidence that the Spirit of the Risen Crucifix will help us shape the days granted to us in the Kingdom of the One who wanted a new humanity, united and fraternal.'

As well as the special concert, Bocelli is also currently fundraising with his Andrea Bocelli Foundation (ABF) on GoFundMe to raise money for hospitals to protect their medical staff with equipment during the COVID-19 emergency.
So far Italy has seen 15,887 deaths and 128,984 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
Bocelli's special live Easter concert will be available to stream on his YouTube channel from 6PM UK time.

Disney's The Lion King on Broadway is Offering a Free Online Theater Course for Kids

Disney's The Lion King on Broadway is Offering a Free Online Theater Course for Kids

Disney Theatrical Productions has made their Lion King-themed curriculum free for families during the pandemic.

This is a modal window.

While families might not have the option to head to a theater or take a dance class in-person right now, various enriching virtual experiences are popping up all over the internet. One of the latest comes from Disney Theatrical Productions. The Lion King Experience is a holistic arts education program that provides kids and their parents with an immersive introduction to theater through the lens of the Broadway production of The Lion King.

The curriculum, split into a "Kids" edition aimed at kids aged 8-11 and a "Jr." edition for adolescents aged 12-15, was originally designed to accompany a school's production of the show and is generally taught in classrooms. But Disney has now adapted the 45-minute lessons for families to enjoy at home.

What's more, they're offering both for free.

To dive in, families can head over to LionKingExperience.com, then download either the KIDS curriculum (11 sessions) or the JR curriculum (18) at home-learning modifications, then follow the instructions in the PDFs to link to the accompanying videos and resources.

New Delhi: To keep fans entertained during quarantine, English rock band Pink Floyd will stream its full-length archival concerts for free every Friday, starting 17 April, on YouTube.

“Starting later today, at 5 pm UK time (12 pm EST) is the @YouTube Film Festival, which Pink Floyd and David Gilmour are participating in. Whilst the band have been running #PinkFloydFriday for a couple of years, releasing a different music video at 5 pm UK every seven days to start the weekend in style, for the next four weeks, a full concert performance will be available at YouTube.com,” the band posted Friday on its Facebook page.

The first concert to be streamed is ‘Pulse‘, the 90-minute concert film recorded in 1994 at the Earls Court in London during the band’s ‘Division Bell Tour’.

Until now, this legendary music band had been sharing snippets and short video clips from its archives, but with the UK extending its lockdown period to at least another three weeks, Pink Floyd has decided to stream concerts for free.

Earlier this month, the band had hinted at giving people some “interesting and diverting” music to help them get through the lockdown.

“We’d like to wish you all the best, and hope that you and your families are staying safe and well in these difficult times. With many people confined to home, we will continue to post as normal to hopefully give you some interesting and diverting images, music and video to help us all get through this,” the band had posted on its Facebook page on 1 April.

Other initiatives
Pink Floyd isn’t the only music band offering free concerts during the coronavirus pandemic. Other iconic bands like Radiohead and Metallica have also been sharing full-length concerts to help fans overcome this grim period.

Stratford Festival launches free Shakespeare film festival
This year's festival is on pause until further notice, but viewers can stream 12 of the Bard's plays through July
By Glenn Sumi

Stratford's production of King Lear, starring Colm Feore (right) and Stephen Ouimette, kicks off its free Shakespeare Film Festival series on April 23, the Bard's birthday.

The Stratford Festival was supposed to open in May, with Richard III (starring Colm Feore) launching the newly designed and reopened Tom Patterson Theatre.

But since the festival's four theatres will be dark because of the coronavirus pandemic until at least June, and likely beyond, they've decided to present a Shakespeare On Film festival, beginning on the playwright's birthday, April 23.

The series starts with Stratford artistic director Antoni Cimolino's production of King Lear, which also stars Feore and is fitting because of the circumstances in which Shakespeare wrote it.

“Much has been made recently of the suggestion that when Shakespeare wrote King Lear, in 1606, he was in quarantine because of the plague," says Cimolino, in a press release. "In looking at the play, we see that it documents not only the breakdown of an old king and the destruction of two families but also the disruption of an entire country. It seems almost prophetic.”

The nicely curated program is divided into four themes, each of which resonates with things we're thinking about during the pandemic: Social Order, Isolation, Minds Pushed to the Edge and Relationships.

Each film will debut with a 7 pm viewing party and remain available for free for a three-week period on the Stratford Festival website. Once it begins, with several plays running "in rep," it'll come to resemble the actual Stratford Festival itself.

Here's the schedule, with links to NOW's reviews of either the HD broadcast or the actual production.

It looks like New Yorkers will be on pause for at least another month, which means one more month of finding diversions to stay sane while sheltering in place. If you've already exhausted Netflix's entire library of content, here's a more hands-on type of activity to try.

The internet offers a vast playground of cool art to digitally experience. There are, for example, virtual tours of museums that you can take as well as online art history lectures you can attend. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in particular, has a rich trove of web-only features to check out, and that includes an online drawing class recently launched in honor of The Met's 150th anniversary in April.

A virtual extension of The Met's Drop-In Drawing program, the session includes a step-by-step instructional video that guides you through the finer points of rendering an image of The Met's facade using perspective. You'll learn all about horizon lines, vanishing points and pencil techniques that will enable you to capture New York's greatest museum in all of its Beaux-Arts splendor. Best of all? It's free.

So grab some pencil and paper and whatever you can find to use as a straight edge (the video suggests a flattened noodle box if you don't have a ruler) and follow along below.

This Architecture Studio Released A Series Of Templates Children Can Use To Create Paper Cities During Lockdown

If you think you’re bored being stuck at home all day, think about all the children that can’t go to school or go outside to play with their friends.

However, British architecture studio Foster + Partners found a way to keep children entertained during the lockdown. They have released a series of paper building templates that kids can print out, color and use to build their own paper cities to keep themselves busy. The studio even encourages children to share their own creations on social media using the #architecturefromhome hashtag!

Architecture studio Foster + Partners came up with a creative way to keep children occupied during the lockdown

In an interview with Dezeen, Katy Harris, a senior partner at Foster + Partners, said that the recent lockdown offered the studio an opportunity to create a number of online initiatives that educate and entertain the children that cannot attend school as well as support their parents.

They released a series of templates that kids can print out, color, and fold to create paper cities

Katy says that the studio’s initiative is a “chance for all of us to have some fun and learn at the same time”.

“How about drawing the future architect and the most fantastical skyscraper ever designed!” writes the studio in their latest Twitter post. “This is so much fun and the whole family can play.”

Foster + Partners released templates for a skyscraper, houses and even a tutorial on how to draw trees like an architect.

Katy says that the studio has tried to engage children in activities that are both practical and thought-provoking.

The studio’s main aim was to get children to ask questions about their surroundings and start thinking about the environment they built.

architecture-from-home-foster-partners-3.jpg

Even though the activities are aimed at children up to 12 years of age, everyone can join in on the fun. “From the responses we are getting, even older children are taking something from these activities,” said Katy. “The broad appeal means that anyone can develop them into something bigger and better.”

…as well as a worksheet showing how to draw trees

Katy says that so far the response has been “absolutely fantastic” and “a bit overwhelming”. The studio received emails from all over the world, including Canada, Spain, Italy, Australia and Cambodia. “We are glad to be able to brighten someone’s day or kindle their creativity in some ways – stay tuned for many more fun activities!” concluded Katy.

You can now download over 200 art books from the Guggenheim for free
By Howard Halle Posted: Wednesday April 29 2020, 3:18pm

If you're a lover of art books, we've got a helpful tip for you: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum offers more the 200 exhibition catalogs that you can download from its archives for free!

The titles date back to 1936—over 20 years before the museum moved into its iconic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in 1959—and feature the biggest names in Modern and Contemporary Art: Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Vassily Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Edvard Munch and more. Many of these volumes are associated with shows (both artist monographs and group exhibits) that are themselves considered major milestones in the development of 20th-century art history.

The archive is searchable by artist, year, medium and artistic style or movement. The materials can be downloaded in several formats, including Kindle and PDFs.

You’ll need to register to get those, but the site also offers an option that lets you click on a tome and virtually flip through its pages without logging in. It comes equipped with a zoom function to assist you with reading texts and zeroing in on images of artworks so you can look at them in detail.

So along with virtual tours and various online courses provided by NYC museums, you can add reading to your list of digital content that you can browse through while you’re stuck at home during the current lockdown. You can find a link to the Guggenheim's archive here.

The Metropolitan Opera's suspended 2019-2020 season would be over now, but the company is continuing to entertain audiences at home with its ninth straight week of free streamed performances each night, drawn from its popular series Live in HD. The Met lineup for May 11 through May 17 includes classics by Verdi, Donizetti and Richard Strauss.

The operas begin streaming on the Met's website each night at 7:30pm EDT (12:30am BST) and can also be watched through the Met Opera on Demand app. Each opera remains viewable for 23 hours, until 6:30pm EDT (11:30 BST) the next day. The full schedule for Week 9 is below.

For the third week in a row, the Viewer's Choice on Friday night was recorded before the Live in HD era: the Met’s 1982 telecast of Donizetti’s Scottish tragedy Lucia di Lammermoor, starring the stupendous Australian coloratura soprano Joan Sutherland in her signature role, opposite Alfredo Kraus as Edgardo. (To vote for future Viewers’ Choice selections, visit the Met’s Facebook or Instagram page on Friday night.)

Also up this week: Massenet’s Werther, with heartthrob tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Goethe's sad poet; young British composer Thomas Adès's recent adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, directed by the visionary Robert Lepage; Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos, with dueling divas Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle; and Benjamin Britten's dark fishing story Peter Grimes. The weekend features two lavish Verdi works: Michael Mayer's staging of Rigoletto, set in Rat Pack–era Las Vegas, and the massive biblical epic Nabucco.

The Met's useful thumbnail guide can help you figure out which of these works you might enjoy most. The company also provides supplementary articles and podcasts for deeper dives into the operas.

This week's Metropolitan Opera Live in HD schedule:
Monday, May 11: Massenet’s Werther
Starring Lisette Oropesa, Sophie Koch, Jonas Kaufmann and David Bižić
Tuesday, May 12: Thomas Adès’s The Tempest

Dig This: An Online Field School for Junior Archaeologists

At-home lessons and pro tips could help quarantined kids hit pay dirt.

by Isaac Schultz
May 13, 2020

vc8wnjZ.jpg

All you need is a good tool, the right patch of dirt, and an internet connection.

There comes a time in every kid’s quarantine when the outside world starts to look awful irresistible. Maybe it’s the familiar warmth of springtime, or perhaps the stir craze that has come with being cooped up in the accrued months of social distancing. Whatever the cause, most kids right now are unable to hang with friends on the nearest (temporarily closed) playground and get their hands dirty.

“What can you do if you’ve got a bunch of kids with nothing better to do?” says Carenza Lewis, an archaeologist at the University of Lincoln in England. “Get them digging.”

So was created Dig School—a partnership between the university, the Council for British Archaeology, and the preservation organization Historic England. Led by Lewis, Dig School is now offering 20 online workshops, styled for junior archaeologists between ages 10 and 15, that teach the basics of excavatory science through at-home exercises and lessons from the field.

Some lawns have gardens. Others have dig sites.

Some lawns have gardens. Others have dig sites.

With even professional archaeologists’ field seasons foreclosed by stay-at-home orders, Dig School spotlights the progress that can be made from home, and serves as a reminder that archaeological inquiry is bound only by one’s curiosity—and, of course, whatever the local law might be concerning hole-digging where you live.

You might think that only seasoned, accredited archaeologists can unearth hidden treasures, but many discoveries are made by kids. The Dig School offers conceptual lessons as well as practical tips of the trade. (For instance, Lewis advises keeping the holes where you dig small. The bigger the square, the more likely you are to miss some stuff.)

Recent participants were asked to draw a room they knew well, and imagine it being found 2,000 years from now; then, everyone got someone else’s illustration, and attempted to reconstruct the original space.

You never know—something like a St. Kilda cleit could be awaiting discovery beneath your backyard.

In another exercise, participants were given an unmarked map of St. Kilda—an isolated archipelago off the northern coast of Britain that was settled in Neolithic times—then played battleships to figure out where others thought the most sensible disembarkation point was.

St. Kilda may be a bit remote, so it’s good to remember that ancient finds are everywhere. In fact, they may be just below your feet. For the intrepid archaeologist, discovery is a just trowel and a small square away.

“Even if your house was only built in the 20th century, there may be finds from half a century [ago] or more—covering periods when people spent much more time outside than [they do] today,” Lewis says. “Seeing an old plastic cassette tape (remember them?!) emerging from the dirt not only connects people with the past, but also shows how our lives become the archaeology of the future.”

Zoom Playdate: Games that Kids Can Play Together

4O0A8188.jpg

Here are 5 games that kids can play together over a video call.
  1. Mystery Item Guessing Game
    How to Play:
    1. Have each child bring 3 objects to the video call and hide the item from the other person
    2. Take turns trying to get the other player to guess the item.
    3. Kids will get creative coming up with clues and once the other player guesses correctly, they can reveal the item.
  2. Share a Story
    How to Play:
    1. Players will take turns going back and forth, telling a story.
    2. It can help to have an object that starts the story, like a favorite toy or doll. This is a great prompt for what the story can be about.
    3. Player 1 starts, like “Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Elsie”
    4. Player 2 then comes in with the next line, “And then she went to the store to buy apples”.
    5. Kids may need prompting. A simple “what happened next” or “and then Elsie did…”
    6. Younger kids may enjoy telling short stories and keep starting over again. That’s okay and a great way to keep the giggles going.
  3. Scavenger Hunt Show & Tell
    How to Play:
    1. Before the call, have kids do a scavenger hunt (a simple one like items that are “red, blue, green, yellow, and brown”)
    2. On the call, they can share what they found on the hunt.
    3. Tip: Use a shoebox or a small basket. One of the rules of the game can be that everything needs to fit in the box.
  4. Matching Game
    How to Play:
    1. Each player prints this printable from HOMER and cuts the pictures out before the call. It’s a great activity to practice using child-safe scissors.
    2. Each player spreads the items out in front of them.
    3. Take turns holding up an item and the other player needs to find the matching picture.
  5. Silly Noises Guessing Game
    How to Play:
    1. Using the same printable for the matching game, each player takes turns trying to get the other player to guess the animal based on making noises or sounds like that animal.
    2. Once the player guesses correctly, show them the picture.

Coding Programs for Kids: FREE Websites & Apps
MAY 28, 2020 BY PARENT VAULTLEAVE A COMMENT

As a computer scientist, I am passionate about exposing kids to computer programming from a young age. After posting this list of Educational Kids Apps That Don’t Require Wi-Fi (which contains a free coding app!), I got lots of requests for more coding programs for kids. My kids learned to code on free coding websites and apps before they even learned how to read fluently, so this request is right up my alley!
I remember the excitement I felt the very first time I was exposed to coding. I was in the sixth grade and my school taught us how to write very simple scripts in an Apple software program called HyperCard. This was before the World Wide Web even existed, back when we hiked 50 miles in snow to get to school each day… oh wait, no, that was my mom!
Our children are fortunate to have a plethora of fantastic, free coding websites and apps that teach kids programming skills. Before we begin, don’t forget to join our Facebook Group and follow us on Pinterest, so you won’t miss out on any of our educational fun for kids!
Free Coding Websites & Apps that Teach Kids Programming
Why Every Child Should Learn to Code
Why should kids learn how to code? This is an important question to address before getting to the list of free coding websites and apps.
1. Coding teaches kids problem solving skills
Understanding how to code also gives kids an understanding of how computers work in general. They learn to think like engineers and use logic to solve problems.
2. Learning how to code expands creativity
There is a lot of experimentation involved in kids writing code. They often have to “think outside of the box” to create solutions. It is also a huge confidence boost when a child works on solving a problem, attempts to tackle it in multiple ways, and finally finds a solution.
3. Programming improves thinking skills
In order to write computer programs, you have to learn how to think differently. This is why coding develops your logical thinking skills. You gain an understanding of how to break a large problem down into smaller parts.
4. Coding is a fun way for kids to learn math
All of us would love for our kids to practice math outside of school, but getting kids excited to practice math is not always the easiest task. However, computer programming relies heavily on math skills. So your kids won’t even notice that they are practicing math, when they are having fun!
5. Computer coding is the future
In today’s world (and in the future), it is increasingly important that everyone learns how to read and write computer code. Gone are the days when only computer scientists write code. People who work in a variety of sectors (including health, technology or finance) may be expected to write, or at least understand, code and scripts.
Free Coding Websites for Kids
Now that we have established why your kids should learn how to code, how do we go about teaching them to write computer programs? The following is a list of free coding websites for kids of all levels. If you have other suggestions, please share them in a comment below!
1. Scratch.MIT.edu
MIT, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, created this amazing, free coding platform for kids to learn computer science. Your child will use code blocks to create games, animations and interactive stories. You can even learn how to program Lego WeDo Robots and Tello drones that use Scratch!
2. Code.org
Code.org is one of the most well-known and popular coding websites for kids. They have Hour of Code activities that can generally be done in around sixty minutes. Code.org has coding classes for Kindergarten through 5th grades, 6th though 12th grades and even higher education classes. Their coding lessons even have kid-friendly themes like Frozen’s Elsa and Anna, Star Wars and Minecraft.
3. Stencyl
Stencyl allows students to program entire video games with drag-and-drop code blocks (very similar to Scratch). There are computer coding lessons to teach kids about computer science as well. The games your kids create can even be published for free to the web, or to iPads, iPhones, Android devices, and both Mac and Windows computers for a fee (but this is not at all necessary!) There is even a certification program and exam that they offer, together with IAI (the Interactive Assessment Institute).
4. Tynker
Tynker teaches kids how to create apps, code robots, program games and even create Minecraft challenges! The basic program is free, but there is a charge for the advanced classes. Your child will start off learning programming basics and then can delve into JavaScript and Python.
5. Code Monkey
Code Monkey contains over 200 free challenges to teach kids how to code, using a monkey that catches bananas. There is a paid version, if you want additional challenges, but 200 is a great start!

Free Coding Apps for Kids
Do you prefer for your child to learn how to code using an app, rather than a website? Here are some of my favorite (FREE!) kids coding apps available on Amazon, in Apple’s App Store and in Google’s Play Store.
1. Scratch Jr.
ScratchJr is a free coding app, aimed at kids who are five to seven years old. They will learn how to program games and interactive stories, using brightly colored programming blocks that snap together. They also have a kids introduction to computer programming book called The Official ScratchJr Book: Help Your Kids Learn to Code, and Coding Cards.
2. Lightbot
Lightbot (and Lightbot Jr for younger kids) is a coding app that teaches kids about recursive loops, conditionals, sequencing and procedures. You can access a free version as part of Lightbot’s Hour of Code here, but the apps have far more functionality and are worth every penny for their small price tag.
3. Cargo-Bot
Cargo-Bot is a very simple kids coding app for kids who are six years old and up. There are 30 levels through which your child will learn the basic concepts of computer programming.
4. Daisy the Dinosaur
Daisy the Dinosaur is a free dinosaur coding app made by Hopscotch Technologies. It is only available on Apple devices though. The app is aimed at kids who are six to eight years old and they will create code using drag and drop blocks.
5. Swift Playgrounds
Swift Playgrounds is available only on Apple devices (iPhone / iPad), and is a platform for learning the Swift coding language. Your child will learn how to code loops, functions and conditional code, as well as learn how to use variables and debug issues.
Is Your Child Ready to Learn Computer Coding?
Absolutely! And then, after your kids create their computer programs… share their creations (if the website / app provides a shareable link) or post a photo / video of what they make on Facebook! Make sure to include a link to this website or to our Facebook Group and Facebook Page, so that we can see it too! I can’t wait to see the creative stories that everyone makes!
