Forgot to mention the most disturbing part of my grocery store run:

Dawn dish soap has changed formulation. Apparently this is old news, by like a year.
I had a good stash of old Dawn but ran it down.

This new aroma smells like watermelon bubblegum.
I won't disparage its effectiveness yet, but I tried the new stuff, while filling up a sink of hot water.
With the amount I put in, there should have been bubbles to the ceiling.
Why do they have to mess with stuff like this?!

Frozen turkeys have been in the local WalMart for a week. Shady Brook Farms at .98/lb and Butterball at 1.04/lb. Maybe there will be a glut this year, as I don't recall Butterball at under 1.29/lb, when the first ones arrive in stores. Most are in the 16 to 19 pound range, but enough at 22+ pounds, too.

I wait for the yearly sale, one week before Thanksgiving, when they are almost always at .49/lb. New Englanders generally have to have their turkey dinner, that Pilgrim thing. So we most likely have the highest percentage of the population eating turkey on that day, than anywhere else in the country. Even the migrants get in on it, with many free turkey giveaways to their communities. I have no idea how they cook it. Anyone here from Springfield, Ohio?

Brings back the good old Covid clamp down memories of our Governor asking/telling people to buy a turkey no larger than 14 pounds, to limit the size of gatherings. He's no longer the Gov, but our new one is worse.

My guess is that some (1) ingredient was determined to be unacceptable by the government; or (2) a new ingredient was deemed to raise sales by some advertising agency.

This concerns me because I use Dawn dishwashing liquid to wash my hair. I prefer the old formula Dawn to any shampoo on the market.

I still have a few bottles of the old stuff, as I bought a lot of it around the time of the pandemic lockdowns (for both washing the dishes and washing my hair).

But when it is time to buy more, I wonder if the new formula will be as good for my hair as the old formula?

I noticed about a year ago when I had to renew my Dawn dishwash stash. The new stuff just doesn't work like the old did. I have to use a lot more of it to wash a sink of dishes, and it still doesn't cut the grease good. Not to mention not having very many suds. I don't like their new formula at all. I've even thought about switching to a different brand.

When I was using the old Dawn, I could dilute it with water in another bottle to make it last longer and save money, and it still worked great. Not anymore.

Within the last year, the formulas have changed for the following items, at least in the brands I used to use, and not for the better:

- bar soap (now replaced)
- liquid detergent (happened recently, now looking for replacement)
- dishwasher powder (found one replacement, then that one was changed as well!)
- hand lotion (found one replacement, then that one was changed as well!)
- liquid hand soap (now replaced)
- laundry liquid (trying out potential replacement)

This is part of the reason that I prep for as long a period as is practical, both in durability and in storage area. Preps "buy time" to find replacement options for staple items when they change without notice.

I’m sure I’ll do another Cornish hen in a dog bowl for the holiday.
Cornish hen is my absolute favorite of all poultry. But, a dog bowl?

I just saw a twin pack of Perdue Cornish hens at WalMart, for about $11, somewhere about 2 to 3 pounds total weight. A 22 pound turkey should cost me about the same.

Yes, that would be Dennis and is his sooper-dooper-pupper-dog.
Fond of the pup he is!

Went to a local CVS in our area. Few things are now in locked cages or cabinets. But what surprised the most was that they were only stocking things 2-3 deep. Many only 2 and tons of empty shelves. Talking about shampoo, mouthwash, toothpaste bandages and OTC type stuff. Even the candy isle was not stocked that well. The lady at the counter said instead of getting cases of product in they get totes of ones and 2s to stock. She was told that it was to save money on excess inventory. More just in time foolishness she also added that it was effecting the pharmacy as well. Things that make you go hummmm.

I’m curious about this herb?
I took it years ago and turned my mother and brother on to it. Then for some reason I stopped taking it for several years and a year or so before my brother died he talked me into using it again. It really helps to using less OTC stuff for sinus and allergy. And its also good for your eyes. A little research will tell you what you want to know about it. Before now Amazon had the best price and it seems like its all gone up.

I’ll look into that because I have terrible sinus issues
I have one right now

nature's way eyebright herb has gone from 12.54 to 21.84. I have a few bottles already but wanted to add more to my stash, this price increase may slow that down drastically. I use it to cut back on sinus meds.
It looks like it is back down on Amazon. Also vitacost has it for 9.19 with buy one get one half off and a $10.00 off code with $50 purchase. It looks like the strength is different though.

The meat departments around me seem to be going down hill. You can no longer get so many different cuts of meat. Ages since I've seen a boneless pork loin roast with the nice white fat on it. Some of the Mexican markets have it but not the regular.

Orowheat seems to be the only bread you can get fresh. Everything else is hit or miss. I like Miltons but since OW bought them out it is a week old when you get it.

I had to get a large can of crushed pineapple nobody had the small cans. Just irritating shortages in everything. I can't figure out if it's real shortages or something incompetent store managers are behind.

And I'm fed up with organic lettuce and celery. If growers can't grow better than that then they shouldn't be in business.

This is soooooper dangerous. If you run out of the stuff you are turning multiple times…… you are not making up for the stuff that is just sitting there…… slow bleeding to dearh

They want you to buy that so-called "new" Dawn Power Spray. I swear it's the same stuff as the old Dawn, but higher price. I haven't bought it.

Oh, BTW, eggs were $4.99 a dozen at Wegmans this week. What's up with that? Cripe.

60 count eggs at WalMart are up to $21.44.

Ellio's frozen pizza, is this the bottom of the barrel? One local store had 18.3 ounce (9 rectangular slices stacked 3 high) boxes for $1.99 each. That's about half the price of the next cheapest brand. I only buy frozen cheese pizza and do my own fresh toppings (especially red bell peppers, which even local pizza places don't use). If any good, I'll fill the freezer spaces, as the sale is for a few more days.

We've had recalled carrots and cucumbers in the last month. I'm almost completely fed up with grocery stores in general. You pay an arm and a leg for items only to find out an illegal has used the field as a toilet.
I said the same thing!
I stopped buying things to make salads because of expense. Then when I DO feel like “who cares, we need something green and crunchy to eat”?
Its recall after recall.
I bought stuff last week but only the whole, bulk carrots and celery along with whole romaine lettuce, then scrubbed them down with hot soapy water.
Even then I was as hesitant to eat any of it but we seem to be ok so far.

Even DH hesitated which he never does; their restaraunt got contamination warnings last month!

I switched to the organic hot house cucumber last order. Hugely expensive. I just can't keep up with all the recalls.
I'm seeing info that says washing well alone will not get rid of all the salmonella bacteria because it can penetrate deep within the skin. They are suggesting peeling for safety. It never dawned on me to peel cucumbers.

I know prices are going up on everything. I see it every trip to the store. However, I am so grateful for the good buys Heavenly Father blesses us to find, especially since DH got laid off 4 months ago. Last week, there were seven 5-lb bags of Gold Medal flour on the clearance shelves for $1.05 each. Very good price, so we picked them up. At checkout, they were also on some other mega-deal discount for $1 off each when you buy five or more. So each bag was 5 cents.

Yesterday, DH had to run to town, so he stopped by the store in case there were any deals. He got ten 2-lb packages of ground beef and pork mix for $3.50 each. Natural--just peanuts and salt--peanut butter in 16 oz containers for $1.06. And because I love Adam's peanut butter, he got 6 jars of that which were discounted to $2.49. Sesame oil bottles for $1.75. And two weeks ago, he got 20 bags of dark chocolate chips for 50 cents each. I should have had him get more of the chocolate chips. He's decided that they go really well in his hot chocolate.

I give up.
Saw a short segment on one of the news shows this week.

CHOCOLATE.

Has doubled in price this year. Due to drought and unsustainable ways of growing cocoa beans. People are over there (Africa, can't remember which country) helping them grow and sustain in old-fashioned ways, so maybe the price will come down some next year. Maybe.

School marm: Yes, the Lord does bless us with bargains ... markdowns, clearance, and sales are what I mostly buy. For instance, I wanted some canned beef but it was around $4.50 a can. A few days later, I saw the same brand in markdown basket for less than $1.50 a can! Bought them all ... I always pray for His favor and provision and give Him all the thanks for my preps. It's harder to find some now. All these stupid recalls!

I seldom to almost never buy salad greens due to recalls. I peel carrots, apples and cucumbers. I have a special list of foods to avoid due to kidney stones and cucumbers are okay for me as long as they are peeled. I gorge on cucumbers during garden season and forego them the rest of the year. Same with fresh tomatoes.

I can only remember one good sale purchase in the last year and that was organic free range whole chicken for half price. It was so good, tasted like chicken always used to taste. Even half price it was more than regular chicken, but well worth it at half price. I read ads online for Fareway and HyVee but there are few items I would purchase and even sale prices aren't that great. Since I only shop once a month, I'm sure I miss in-store bargains occasionally, but I don't want to shop more often on the off chance of a bargain. Also, I do most of my grocery shopping at Aldi, a few items from Walmart and a few from Fareway.

i Know this isn’t food, but kind of related. i have a family member who works at Costco. He told me that Costco won’t be selling Christmas trees this year- and may not sell them for 5-6 years, after forest fires in Oregon destroyed the trees at the farms from which Costco purchases Christmas trees. just FYI

Many Christmas trees in the northeast come from Canada.
