So much of the produce I've been buying lately looks good when I get it, but rots within a day or two or just has no flavor; plums and peaches are mealy and nasty. I'm now careful to keep my receipts, because the next time I go to whatever store I got something bad at I request a refund, which they all give without question. (Aldi, Publix, Trader Joe's - I rarely get produce at Walmart.)

Another thing I've noticed: Whenever I go to Publix, I look at my shopping list on the app, and always get a pop-up asking if I'd like to connect to their internet. I went to one Publix, and there was no internet, so I just figured it was down that day, but the next week I went to another Publix, and they didn't have internet either. I've noticed the same thing at Walmart, Aldi, Trader Joe's, and Wendy's- it seems stores aren't offering free internet to customers anymore, along with cutting way back on the A/C.

Something else you might want to consider stocking up on: lightbulbs. I was looking at what I have on hand, and they're all made in various different countries - most from China. You don't want to be down to your last one and find you can't get anymore!

Well I hate to waste beautiful fruit too. This year my plums are falling off the trees because I am no longer able to pick them and none of the people I mentioned it too have showed up. They liked them in previous years when we picked them. Lazy. Anyway if anybody lives near me in the Victor Valley PM me.

Do you have a FRIIT PICKER STICK' (-About 13 to 20 foot long,,? It is a lightweight one. They are $19. + shipping
shipping is $7 (for me)
They take PAYPAL TOO!

Thank you for the suggestion Ainit but we have one. I am having balance issues so can't do it as I use 2 canes and don't want to trip. I'm going to have DH out early and pick a couple of bags. Almonds are thick this year also DH shakes them off onto a burlap if he is able and the scrub Jay's have a party with the rest. I don't know if any of you ever watched scrub Jay's but they bury the almonds and store them. How the heck they find them again is beyond me.

I am so sorry, but at least you have your husband to help, treasure him. i also walk with 2 canes because of balance, and am widowed.

But God has sent neighbors to mow my grass and somebody is putting my trash can back after it is emptied. So, I have to THANK GOD for all the helpers he has sent to me.

I found Keystone meats in Ingles today.
I looked up Keystone canned meats at Walmart.com.....Wow - what a ripoff, check out Ingles.
how much were they?
Whenever I see 3 day shipping that is not Walmart usually but an affiliate like Amazon has. They are charging 10.98 for large can. I avoid.

For Clarity (many of you already know this, but for anyone that does not):

When looking at Walmart.com for Keystone Meats, if you see "sky high" prices on 3+ day shipping, look at the "Sold and shipped by" line in the listing. If it lists any company other than Walmart, it is not Walmart selling it: You are looking at an advertisement by 3rd party company to sell on Walmart's site, much like the affiliate (as Terrwyn described). Most of the time 2-day and 1-day shipping are from Walmart itself, although there are exceptions. In some areas, the 1-day shipping may also be an indication that the item is on the shelf at a Walmart near you.

The current normal price (from Walmart) for the the larger 28oz cans are $10-$11, and the 14oz cans are $6-$7. Although I'm expected another price bump soon.

Also, you can buy by the case direct from Keystone Meat, at the below link. Currently they have all the types other than turkey & ground beef in stock. Until very recently most of the types on the website would pop in and out of stock, but be mostly out of stock.

*Note: Those sky high prices can be $40-$90 per can. Right now one can of Ground beef is $43.76 from a 3rd party company. That is actually cheaper than some I've seen in recent history.

They have really gone up. No ground beef available. Regular beef was 9.98 or so. Chicken and pork were both $8.52. Pork has always been the lowest cost, but now it's on par with chicken. The ones I got are dated out to 2027, not that I won't use them before that.

I need to get back to the Mennonite store. They carry Walnut Creek meats in a can. They have the usual, but also have canned turkey. Cans are smaller, like a can of vegetables or soup. Price is lower also and dates are always a couple of years out. Sometimes a smaller can is just enough.

Thanks for taking the time and patience to explain this again. I have pretty much lost mine. ;)

Seems there's always a new crop of people who are shocked by these prices..when they aren't anything but 3rd party "affiliates" trolling for suckers. Not Walmart. Not Amazon. And certainly not legitimate current market prices.

Unfortunately, it must pay off for the 3rd parties, or they wouldn't bother. Indeed, there's one born every minute.

As evidenced during ammo shortages.

People would pay out the nose for whatever is available...until there was none.

For anyone is in the Mid Atlantic states, you might want to check your Krogers if you need/want ground beef. They have 80/20, 3#, frozen rolls for 5.99. That's $2 per pound. The sign said 8.99 per roll, but when it rang up it was 5.99 per roll. I consider this an excellent deal about bought 9 rolls. I'm going to cook some today, if it's good I may get more.

They also have their Kroger brand marinara for $1.19. This is better than our Aldi's price now. They are in glass jars, thin glass jars. You could repurpose them for storing dried goods. I wouldn't trust them for canning. Last week they had butter $2.50/lb. I'm going to make ghee today.

I'm almost afraid to say that there are no shortages in my area of S.CA high desert. Out of 27 items I had one substitution. Regular Stouffers lasagna for meat lovers. This is especially true since I switched to a farther away Albertsons. A much better run store.
Listening to Southern Prepper boots on the ground you would think the whole world is falling in. Sorry folks it's not falling in here yet. At least food wise.

Which is better tasting, Yoder’s ground beef or Keystone?

Have never tried Yoder's. However, to test the Keystone ground beef, I made our spaghetti w/ meat sauce (same recipe I always use), except I replaced the fresh ground beef I typically use with Keystone ground beef. No one noticed any flavor or texture differences. That was enough evidence for me to put away several cases. Wish I had bought more, but then it went unobtanium.

Unobtainium is understated! I just checked Walmart. ONE can (28 oz) is...wait for it...

$43.76!

Guess I'll order 12...not. :-)

Why not can groundburger yourself?

Gotta be cheeper?

The couple of times I canned ground hamburger in the last few years, did not hold up (texture wise) after about a year. It was still fine to eat, but it was noticeable different. Doesn't mean I won't do it again, because I will. Hopefully future batches will hold up better. However, when I bought my cases of it, it was almost the same price as the ground beef at our local HEB. Obviously that price ratio has now changed.

I have canned my own in the past and, fortunately, they all still look good. I haven't looked at the date on the top, but it was quite a number of years ago. A couple of years ago, I opened one to use and it was great. Aldi price of $3.99/ pound still makes it workable.

Safecastle 244 on Amazon for 12.
Thanks, Terrwyn. Sounds like it would be good, but I'm always anti-Amazon. I've had to jump through all kinds of hoops just to cancel prime and their streaming service even though I didn't ask to join. I made a pact with myself to save the heartache and order somewhere else or do without. So far, I'm not suffering. I'll look at it, just for kicks. :-) Looks like I'm desperate for a good time, doesn't it? :-)

This might be me in denial but I'm getting fed up with the fear mongering. I checked my email a little while ago and Dr Mercola ad is screaming food shortages this fall. Southern prepper is screaming nuclear war, on and on. Are they trying for a run on food and the banks? Anyway that is a drift but where I'm at right now. Tired of it.

I think what they are saying is inevitible. Don't let your cat food stash get down just to be on the safe side. And its obvious that prices are through the roof.

I got my Amazon Subscribe & Save monthly delivery today. Everything was in stock, but the 10# bag of Gold Medal flour (a few cents over $5) was inside a plastic bag, as there was a small hole in the paper bag. The bottom of the box had some grounds from the Hawaiian coffee; aparently that bag also had a small hole in it, probably from the sharp edges of the bags of dog treats. Complained to Amazon, and they gave me a refund on both, don't have to return them, so...I guess I got the best price of the day! (FREE!) :D

I have always had that kind of experience with Amazon‘s customer service when something has gone astray. It’s why I keep doing business with them (that and I’m in a rural area so it’s convenient).

Just do like me. I've started taking everything I read with a grain of salt and try to use my own common sense and judgement. Don't let your guard down. Always try to be prepared just in case.
