All the grocery stores I shop in have a cooler for "close-by" dated meat...including Sam's Club. I always check it, and often find something that's a good deal. Usually half-price. A good place to find odd cuts for soup/stew, out-of-season turkey parts, formerly expensive steaks, sometimes smoked fish, etc. It's marked "either use or freeze immediately"..otherwise, just as good as any other.
We do find a lot of discounted chicken that way.

Hmm, I see meat "on sale" but haven't seen a bin for the really old stuff in years now.

I looked up my own question, and the results are quite varied. Take a look if you have a few minutes:

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

It's been a few years, since I've seen the "day old" meat bins. There was only one grocery store in town that had them. That's where my MIL shopped. All of the meat she brought home was still fresh enough that it was well worth the cost to her. She always shopped early in the morning, so she only bought the freshest that was put out the night before. I'm just assuming that if one grocery store did it, others might still do it, too.

I haven't seen that at our Sam's. I'll look for it the next time I go. Like I said in my above post, I haven't seen any grocery stores in my immediate area that still have those coolers with "close-by" or "day old" meats available.

Maybe we are just cheap-asses up here that actually buy it. ;) I have learned over the years ALL the tricks to feeding people for little money....and I think it's a fairly common talent in the hinterlands. Many of us have processed our own meat/game, and know that it's still good and a good deal even if it was cut and packaged a few days earlier.

As for Sam's....I always check that section for lamb. It doesn't sell all that fast at the regular price, and I'll snarf up any I find at reduced price. Yummm. Will say, it does pay to shop early in the day, right after they pull the older stuff in the morning.

I have no problem with buying it if I can find it. What my MIL got was all good. She would share some with us to help us out when Cary and I first got married. I will definitely be checking at Sam's.

I was in a supermarket meat area where a worker was loading a basket of expired today meat.

What are you going to do with that meat?

Throw it out.

Is there not a charity food pantry around here that could use it?

Too many lawyers between us and them.

Yep, while self isolating here I got bored so I watched a variety of weird stuff on YouTube. Don't laugh too hard, but there are lots of videos of people who "dumpster dive" - and it's stunning & appalling to see the amount of perfectly good looking bananas, produce, boxed goods, canned goods, and even full boxes of cold not past expiration date meats & frozen whole chickens they retrieve from grocery chain dumpsters!

Even during the pandemic - while so many out of work people were lined up for hours at food banks these stores were tossing so much food! I wouldn't have believed it but there are plenty of videos showing it, so it's for real. The amount of food waste being practiced by retailers is atrocious!

That would make sense.

Just think about it for a moment.

Sale meat that just just about to expire or expires that day is sold. Some one doesn't use common sense and use it soon or freeze it to be used soon. It goes bad as they treat it like fresh meat that lasts a while. Gets sick and then sues.

It is all because we have idiots out there and far too many lawyers.

At one time, on another discussion board (TOL) that some of you might remember, there was a guy who did this all the time. They would arrive just in time for the grocer to chunk the meat and produce out the back into the dumpster, and they would load it up, and take it home. All for free.

Nobody is going to get sick on raw meat that has been properly refrigerated and has a couple of extra days on it. But my guess is that in many parts of the country, people don't know that, and so, will not buy it...leaving the stores no good options.

Sure, close-dated beef and pork may not look as pink in the packages as the new cuts, but people aren't used to the color of real meat that has naturally oxidized under refrigeration (brownish). It's still good.

I agree, but as many have said. The average IQ is 100, so half the population are dumber than average.

I've wondered for years what exactly do all these food chains do with meat that's about to expire? I don't believe they give it to food pantries from what I saw a long time ago when I had to get some food for a while from one in the best suburb around where I was living. I think we did that for a few months until I got another job and maybe twice they gave one pound of hamburger, and other than that no meat. Hmmm.......... I know they aren't selling it all, so where does it go? Seriously.
I pick up the waste chicken feed from my local food bank. My dogs and cats have eaten steaks and chicken from the local safeway. Not too often, the meat packages that come to me are torn or very expired. they are allowed to a couple days past expired for most things.
The expired untorn pancakes of rice, beans, white flour, etc go right into emergency storage for humans and animals.

Try walmart.com. They carry almost everything Amazon does and usually at better prices.

I actually went on to the Smith's website and they have it for $21.99. After I saw your post I checked Walmart and they have a 50# bag for $25! I'll add a few things to my cart to get free delivery and order from them. Thank for the info. I may need help getting it in the house but I'll make it work LOL

Smart and Final near me throws out dozens of eggs. I watched them one day put them in the dumpster. I dont know what else they toss but if a person was hungry.

Just had a normie lefty contact me and ask what she should be stocking up on. She's pulling her money from the market and her family is stocking up. Her daughter works for a doctor and the business trips to Europe have all been cancelled. she's panicking.

It's starting. I've been telling people for weeks to panic early and avoid empty shelves. They are finally listening.
Did you tell her nothing the government will take care of her?

It has no filler at all. My dogs each get 3 cups a day and they thrive on it. They're sure not losing weight! And because it's nearly all digestible, the poop piles are much smaller.

I volunteered for 25 years at our local emergency food pantry before I retired. For the first 15 years or so, no grocery stores donated anything and the pantry bought all it's food - $1/pound hamburger or $1 pack of hotdogs. About 10 years ago the local Krogers started donating their cosmetically imperfect fruits and vegs and soon to expire canned goods. A few years later they started donating the soon to expire meats. The day before the use by date they'd reduce the price and try to sell it. Anything that did't sell that day went into the freezer and was donated frozen to the pantry where we kept it frozen and gave it out frozen. When it came in, we volunteers looked it over and occaisionally did throw out something that didn't look like something we'd be willing to eat. Over time we started to get the real nice high price meats that people couldn't afford, even when reduced. Only Kroger, of the 4 grocers in town donates meat to the food pantry.

I keep a price book. Earlier this week I shopped at Aldi's, here in the upper mid-West. I didn't check out meat prices because I get our meat from a local farmer. But I did find it interesting that their prices on shelf stable foods have not gone up at all.
All of these prices are at Aldi's. It's the first time I've been shopping in months. For example,

Canned corn: 11/8/18 was .49, 11/5/19 was .45, on 5/12/2020 was .44

Flour (5lb): 3/31/19 was $1.22, 5/12/2020 was $1.15

Peanut butter (18 oz): 11/13/15 was $1.49, 11/8/17 was $1.15, 11/5/19 was $1.15, 5/12/20 was $1.15

Canned salmon (14.75 oz): 3/15/17 was $2.49, 5/12/20 was $2.29

Cream of Mushroom soup : 7/14/17 was .49, 5/12/20 was .49

Sugar is normally pretty volatile. 4lbs of sugar has ranged from $2.69 in 2015, $1.79 in 2016 & 2017, to $1.29 in 2018, and $1.73 on 5/12/20.

Same here on price checking. I always check the mark down bins.

Just personal preference but I won't buy marked down chicken. Beef yes, but chicken no. Had a bad experience with one marked down package that was actually rotten, same with seafood.

Beef is really just aged a bit more (which I like).

I feed this to my cats. They’re 10 years old and super healthy. I get mine at Tractor Supply as well.

If it was just you and I shopping, you are correct. Unfortunately, there are too many people out there who have far too much money. It will get sold.

Urgency is ticking upward on meat. Not panic mode, but the herd is looking around.

Interesting, no lamb at our Sam's Club, or any of the local grocery stores.
