ECON Report food and grocery price increases/shortages here - UPDATE, new runs on the stores

Not open for further replies.
Just finished a run with the wife to the local stop and shop.

Clorox items a bit jumbled around on the shelves but still in stock. No issues with TP, cleaning supplies etc. I got the last box of tylonol gel caps that were on the shelves. noticed that the store brand was still in stock. An aside on that last item. the store brand specifically said it was NOT a johnson and johnson product and that it was distributed by some wholesaler. smells of china to me. I didn't see anything specific on the tylanol box that said it was imported so I will go under the assumption that the name brand stuff is manufactured here. Just something to keep in mind
Oh, the Walmart in Batavia had lots of empty spaces where the bleach should be. Didn't see any large jugs of it. The laundry soap had a lot of empty spaces too. My friend was completely oblivious to the empty shelves, didn't even care.

I live in south central PA. On my facebook last night a CNA I know said she went to several stores and there was no hand santitizer to be found. My husband went to harbor freight a couple of days ago and the mask aisle had slim pickings, but as I said before, resellers were grabbing them up weeks ago.

On The Level
I experienced some of what I think are panic buying shortages. Tough to say for sure. Yesterday I got a bit nervous. Decided that rather than sit around and wonder, that I'd take advantage of my prime membership and order snacks and some canned goods from Amazon.

Tried ordering spaghetti sauce off the Prime Pantry list. I got spag sauce in my cart 3 different times only to get to checkout and get a notice saying there's a problem with the quantity I ordered. Sure enough it's out of stock now. Go back and try to order different flavor and/or brand. They kept coming up 'currently unavailable. I'd go back and as my choices became narrower the ones I passed up were now currently unavailable.

Supposedly I've got a couple jars of Prego pasta sauce 'flavored with meat' arriving Friday. Now I've got sauce for the 2 boxes of pasta I found in the cupboard.

It felt the same way trying to order salsa and cheese salsa. Quantities were and getting lower as I was loading my prime pantry box.

Got some extra snacks and other comfort food easy to prepare items coming now but not until Thursday or Friday.

ETA: I should note, there 64 ounce jars of spag sauce available, I didn't want that big of a container. It was just the 24oz I was looking for.

My wife and I went to a Walmart in west Ky yesterday and I saw several people obviously stocking up. There were also several holes in the stock, mainly bleach, water, rice, and the frozen chicken was wiped out. They were restocking the bleach and water while we were there though.

We saw a long time friend doing her grocery run to stock up. She texted me the other night, asking my opinion on the virus, and didn’t want believe it would make it into our community until I told her I knew of three people, at my workplace alone, that have trips planned to areas where outbreaks have occurred. All of them were still planning on going!!! That’s how the virus gets into our little community... stupidity strikes again. Thankfully, the new travel restrictions will stop a couple of them going, but one is still going to California and will be in the area of their outbreak.

Yeah, I work with a colleague who said he and his wife were going on a cruse in mid-March. He had said, "They'd better not cancel it. I'll be pissed if we don't get to take this vacation." I was stupefied. You could not PAY ME ENOUGH to get on a cruise ship right now.

On Friday I went to Krogers. It is the first of the month and they had a good sale going on. It was mildly crowded. Several people were buying multiples of the sale items, one person seemed to be buying tons of dish soap to resell but other than that no real prepping happening in their carts. Everything was well stocked on the shelves.

Saturday I hit Walmart, again lots of shoppers. Only saw one lady with her cart loaded to hilt with obvious prep items. Clorox wipes were all gone after I got the last 3, dry pinto beans gone, everything else well stocked.

I live in bedroom community just outside Little Rock AR.

Did some checking, both Sam's around me are out of long grain white rice. Very odd. No Costsco around. Even online you can't get it. Where is the rice? Hmmm.

These reports of rice being gone are kinda interesting.

Are there that many preppers topping off supplies? (I doubt it)

It would seem that a lot of peeps learned somewhere that rice & beans are basic survival fare.

How many of them have disparaged preppers, in the past?

Back in Louisiana again, walmart yesterday at 5pm, no one looked like they were stocking, but the top shelves of the paper isle were empty, usually full. Did meet 1 Asian lady in the paint section looking for gloves and masks, said she cant find any in town anywhere. Had someone ask me after work where to find the same because Walgreen and our hardware store are out.
People are waking up.

Toured the Poulsbo (near Seattle) Walmart this morning before the crowds woke up. Emergency food packages are gone. Scarcely a bag of beans left, and almost no rice. No hand sanitizer to be had. Many bare-looking shelves with canned goods pushed to the front (soup, beans). Short on TP. Couple people were serious shoppers, and the rest were oblivious.

Preppers vs non-preppers who are stocking up, just in case.

What preppers know, and stocking uppers don't is, food fatigue.

You can still have the same basic supplies, but for preppers they also stock up on things like spices, and tomatoes etc. So they can give a variety to the same basic diet.

Ever stick something in your mouth, and THEN find out what it is, and the thing just grows and grows in your mouth? That's partly it. The other part is you don't have much of an appetite anymore, eating the same foods over and over.

Me either! Told my wife that’s she’s lucky she got her cruise last year, because I sure wouldn’t be going anytime soon.

I did speak with another friend that’s still planning a cruise out of Mobile AL over spring break. I couldn’t believe how lackadaisical she was in her attitude about the virus. I hope for her and her family’s sake I’m wrong.

Went out yesterday for top offs. Wal-Mart x 2, Costco x 2, Dollar Tree x 2 in Albuquerque
1. Nobody has 5 gallon or 3 gallon water storage jugs
2. Wal-Mart and Costco out of powdered milk
3. No masks anywhere. Wal-Mart out of pseudoephedrine
Talked with 2 different gun shop owners too. Herd is getting restless. Lots of jewelry offered for pawn for shotguns and pistols.
Side note: a co-worker needed money fast for tax bill. Sold me his AR-10 flat top, Leuopold 4x15 bdc scope, piccatinny rails, foregrip and 8 mags for $750.00. Couldn't get to the bank fast enough. Wife claimed it if I kick off because it looks sexy.

Maybe they shipped instead to the larger markets that you're in between -- Buffalo and Rochester? Although I don't ever remember seeing vast amounts of preppers in the Roch Wallyworld. Hmmm.....

Ref my post #251. I was at Walmart for the RoTel. They had plenty of it. :)

I mentioned this article somewhere in the ether.

Meanwhile At A Costco In Brooklyn, The Hoarding Begins

www.zerohedge.com

The same long lines that we've seen in China, Japan, South Korea, and across the world as people panic buy food and health supplies have started in the US.
On Saturday, the US Surgeon General urged people to "stop buying masks," saying on Twitter that they're not effective in preventing the general public from catching coronavirus.
Despite the CDC telling everyone to calm down, alleged video of long lines pouring out of a Costco store in Brooklyn, New York, surfaced on YouTube Saturday afternoon.

This angle shows hundreds of people lined up outside of the Brooklyn Costco today in the freezing cold for a chance to load up on supplies amid virus fears.
This comes days after we reported Hawaiians raced to Sam's Club and Costco to panic buy food and health supplies as virus fears surge.

And as we noted earlier today: "The great panic of 2020 is underway" as Americans are now stocking up on supplies as a pandemic could be imminent.

I would also like to note:

What is left out of the article is the rest of the tweet:

They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!

So it's OK for us to come down with it? Also in other online comments by high mucks, they say it doesn't work so don't buy. BUT......but.....but if it doesn't work, why does the healthcare providers NEED them?

My guess, poor ethnics who know how to cook.
I doubt I'd ever see much of a rice shortage up here in the land of Norskies.

My local Walmart grocery delivery service rocks! And once you have placed an order it's so easy to select items for your next delivery by just clicking your favorites link.

The few times they had to make a substitution was very much in MY favor. Also...you can order non-food items, too, for the same delivery. So it saved me a separate trip to the hardware store!

The Aldi's delivery online app is very similar.

Everything you ordered in the past is saved as a favorite. It works as a perfect reminder for your next order. Also all of your substitutions are saved so you do not have to add those every time you place a new order.

After two or three orders, all you have to do is to go click, click, click and you are good to go. About 80% of the work is already done ahead of time presuming you will always add a few new items or specials.

I get SMS notifications on my smart phone so I know exactly when my stuff will arrive. I have a bench right inside the front door where the nice delivery person places my purchases.

It really is a total no-brainer and saves a -ton- of time and hassle.

A huge side benefit is not having to expose oneself to all the people and germs that the hour or two trek to the supermarket typically entails.

I'd like to see if the spot shortages are tied to social media.

The twitters & faceborg could easily be a vector of panic buying.

If there is one thing I am good at on the computer it is shopping. This morning was stocking up on Salsa because I forgot it on my Instacart order and I was running into shortages on Vitacost, Amazon, Walmart, etc. Of course there are other places to order but those are the easy ones. And the stores in my area don't seem to have any shortages yet but Amazon and Walmart are disasters. Tried to send a friend some Steak and Potato soup on Walmart. Nope they were out.
So don't delay there is a definite run online and no telling how long till it starts happening in the stores. Time is running out for sure.

I noticed this yesterday also.... ended up not getting anything due to that and price increases. We were fine, but it never hurts to add one or two things.

Ended up ordering my yeast and the dehydrated hashbrowns I was looking for from Amazon. Also got a couple of more items from Augason that were in stock from them. It should all be here tomorrow.

My son made a trip to Sams in Arvada (no, not Aaarvaaada - sorry those commercials just irritate the hell out of me) CO after I came home from Costco - no yeast to be had there either. I just have a problem with paying close to $6 bucks for a jar when I can buy a lb package for the same price. Got the hashbrowns cheaper than what Costco charges. He said Sams was not crowded at all and had everything else we were looking for in stock.

I'm thinking Costco shifted it to their business center which is where they moved all the #10 cans of stuff, which really irritated me and I let the manager know that. Refuse to go there because 1) it's in a really bad part of town and 2) it's across town and the traffic is horrendous in that area.

Still have a few more things to pick up which I will do later this week (snow again tonight).

Then spent the morning rearranging the cabinets in the basement to get all of the purchases in and rotating out really old canned salsa and jelly so I can clean the jars out.

Anything P&G, canned goods such as soups, veggies, and fruits, because Amazon is already having supply issues with these items.

In our case we have a 100 years supply. I went a little crazy a few years ago and bought several of each of the types of spices we use in the half gallon size.... I have enough pepper to pepper the entire state of Georgia for a year....

LOL! You sound like me! I told Cary the other day that I had enough spices stored to last our lifetime and then some.

To be honest there is some logic behind the purchase.

When ever I read and I read a lot, the one thing that sticks in my mind is how horrible the food was. Every case they said a bit of spice made it so much better. After a bit of thought, I began to buy what we use. We don't have every spice known to man, but we have everyone the wife likes to use.

As spices have been worth more than gold at points in time, I figured it would be a good idea to have more than we needed.... I did go a bit overboard, but I did have a reason...lol

Just imagine the cook book for manna. They had 40 years.

Manna bread
Manna pudding
Manna and Stir fried quail
Stuffed Manna
Manna and Stuffing
except for those who camped on the southern side then it was Manna and Dressing.
Manna burgers, and Manna Fries.

Spices make the same food go a long way.

The Corona Virus has a mortality rate of less than 5%. Why are folks freaking out so much?

God knows the end from the beginning. When it’s my time to go to heaven (again), I will go. All the preparations in the world aren’t going to stop that.
