LOL! I didn't see the breakfast taco thing on Pacha. One of those places served something that sounded so outrageous as a house specialty, that I ordered it, and it was fantastic. Pear-bacon-green onion pancakes! Mmmmm.

To each, his own. I happen to like refried beans and experiment with tortillas. It fits my budget, too.
Ya my budget too. I got four kids. We got steer in the freezer, refried beans, cheese and tortilla.
Only problem I can't find refried beans anymore. Can't get a case on amazon and the Rayles can only buy two cans at a time. I'm digging into my stash now.

Neither here nor there.

I make our retried beans due to the commercial product containing citrus there are recipes galore online.

PDW, perhaps you don’t understand. The reason I go to restaurants is to GET THE HELL OUT OF THE HOUSE. All I do is go to work and come home directly after. Day after day after day. There is NO ONE TO TALK TO AT HOME. I just sit there alone every night. I doubt that most of you live like I do.

I WANT TO GO OUT. I WANT TO DO THINGS.
Me too Dennis. I know exactly how you feel. But i am retired and it's worse. I live all alone in the country and i absolutely HATE staying home. I will go out for ANY excuse even just to the store to get out. I will order out or go thro the drive thro now, eat in the van, read a book or newspaper, lay down and take a nap, and then drive home to my lonely house. I live like you do too i think. No human to talk to. I do have dogs and two cats, but being all alone constantly with no human to talk to is horrible. I sometimes am so bored that i take two baths a day! I read in the tub or listen to the radio. In fact i have the radio on 24 hrs a day even when i am sleeping. Sad to say the radio is "my friend". At least you get out to work. If i worked i would be ok and wouldn't mind so much coming home. I sit alone too. I know how you feel!

Went to Savelot Saturday March 28th. Had LOTS of all kinds of chicken and meat like beef. Loaded. I went in the late afternoon. They said the truck just came in. They close at 7 now so i couldn't check at Aldies.

I went to Burger king to get some food at the drive thro. I saw the girl had gloves on, and she grabbed the drink by the TOP to hand it to the driver. When i got to the window i said to her: "Money is full of germs. Your gloves are contaminated. You picked up the drink by the top putting germs there." She didn't like it at all. Didn't say a word, but made a funny mad like kind of face.

Don't you have a telephone? Are there no volunteer opportunities in your area? Around here there are lots of places looking for volunteers - food pantries, the senior center, the animal shelter... Places where you could be around some people and maybe make some friends.

I needed cig's and was headed out to Food Lion so I call my DD too see if she needed anything from the store. She's been locked away in the house with 3 small kids for about 3 weeks and I could hear it in her voice she was about too crack LOL come get me daddy .
Her hubby watched the kids and we headed to the store.

Meat was wiped out she grabbed the last 1 pack of rib-eye steaks 2 pack.
A few packages of frozen pork ribs and that was about it for meat.
No bacon, eggs ,butter, milk, OJ, little to no can food.

Pet food only the cheap stuff left and little of that.

Frozen veggies was about the only thing that was well stocked besides plenty of bread.

No TP, PT or wipes

Rest of store was Junk food and even that stuff was low.

Cigarettes are getting low I had to sub for another brand mine was out.

We were able to get 95% of what she needed but it took us close to two hr's to find it all LOL. I think she was dragging her feet. Hubby called twice and said the kids had figured out the Warden had left and were going nuts hahaha

NC outside of Greensboro
Did notice folks wearing gloves and a few with masks. Stock boy wiping down/spraying the carts before you had to touch which was nice.

In addition to this:

-Many school districts would probably welcome the help distributing food items
-Are there any elderly in the area you can check in on?
-Maybe find some pen pals that you can email or do video calls with
-Boredom is one of the worst things for mental health. Can you start a garden, or potted vegetables? Take on any new projects around the house? Do some landscaping? Adopt a new pet from the shelter? Keep a diary? Take an online course? Start a book reading list? Organize closets and preps? Begin a new exercise regime? Watch some online sermons and do online Bible studies? Start a text or Facebook group with your neighbors to stay in touch? Go hiking on some forest or hiking trails nearby? Do some foraging for morels or other edibles? Buy some chicks and raise them for eggs? Take an online cooking class? Sign up for an Audible account and start listening to audiobooks, or even podcasts?

I’m one of those people who haven’t uttered the words “I’m bored” since I was a teenager. I’m still working, thankfully, but even if I wasn’t, there are a hundred different things I could find to do in order to keep busy. We’ve never even owned a TV, although now we do stream Netflix shows a few times a week in the evenings just to get our minds off of the virus. I could never understand those who watch endless hours of the boob tube or wasted a half a day trolling Facebook.

Before I got married to my husband, I lived alone on a 160-acre property in a pretty remote area on the edge of a national forest, several hours away from my friends and family. There were times where I’d go weeks without even talking to anyone. It was one of the best experiences of my life. That old cliche “You’ll find yourself” is so true in situations of solitude. I learned revel in many hobbies and tasks, as well as stepped up my fitness game.

I get that it’s easier for introverts to do this, but in this day and age, it’s probably a good thing that the masses are forced to have some downtime where they can be alone. It creates strength and character.

I absolutely refuse to eat mexican food. That includes “tortillers”.

You really should reconsider tortillas. Think of them as flat bread wraps

Now you have a bread maker so it should be opening up a world of making things with flour. Flat bread is simple and the wraps you make can be used for all sorts of things like wrapping hotdogs which someone mentioned. Its not just for mex food. I make a cheese steak sandwich using a wrap every now and again.

Then you have pizza which is basically a flat bread but you added yeast to the dough. Then pasta which is basically flour, eggs and oil.

Then once the dough has settled or risen in the case of pizza you just roll them out as thin as you desire with a rolling pin or use a press or pasta machine if you have them.

Its really simple and if the grocery stores are low on stock like they currently are then making this stuff allows a bit of normal to your life.

And the dogs will enjoy eating your rejects as you practice making them.

All that my friends Mom did was cook the beans and mash with lard in a skillet. She made homemade tortillas everyday like they make pizza. Swirled it around on her hand until it was big and flat and threw it on the burner on the stove to make brown spots.

Sorry for your loneliness Miss Mary. I still have my Dh's companionship but less and less conversation as the days go by. I also miss going out for the few things we still went out for like going to the P.O. and getting a hamburger out. Even Dr's appt was something to look forward to as I liked my wound care nurse. Now nothing. Been almost a month since I talked to anybody except online.

We always keep a case on hand of the refried beans. The wife doesn't eat them, but I do.

Sucks to hear they are limited in stock these days. I normally get mine when I do mystery shopping at a grocery store. Free food and a bonus to do the shopping.

Decided to try the local North Denver Safeway again this morning - got there about 7 am. Not too many people in the store as yet and I wanted to beat the rush.

Wow! Did they finally get a couple of trucks in or what? They had TP, Paper Towels, Kleenex (limit 1 per customer of each). Meat was fully stocked, again limits on some items like chicken and ground beef (2 packages per person). They even had flour finally!! Got 2 Gold Medal unbleached (didn't want to go digging into my stash yet) and 1 of King Arthur Bread Flour. Plenty of eggs and milk.

Vegs' were in good supply and they were just stocking the big packages of salad mix, so I got one of the mixes we like (sans Cilantro).

The checker said it hadn't been that well stocked for the past 3 weeks. She also said to avoid Senior days because they descend like vultures and don't leave anything for others. They were relieving some customers of products that were over the limit - kind of fun in a twisted way watching that happen. But then, I have a very warped sense of humor.;)

I just got word this morning that the very rural Dollar General about two miles from us is back to normal on all their stock. It seems all the panic buying for this round is over with there. Yay! I still don't know about Walmart and other grocery stores in town, though. If there are no new cases of C-19 in our county, in another two weeks, we plan to venture out to the Dollar General, ourselves. That's a big IF, though. It's still going to be a while, before I feel safe going to Walmart and anywhere else.

if you got nothing else to do, you can make a big pot of beans for refried. I used to do that when kids were little. I kept some in the fridge and froze some.
Another fun things was take a pack of tortillas, any kind. Cut the stack in 4, like a pie, fry up quick in little oil. Salt. Makes good chips. Or fry them whole in butter. Grandsons love these.
Stores here aren't too bad. Still low on the regular stuff everyone is seeing. I just went one day when I had to go to feed mill.

Well, you don’t live in “Nuevo mey-hee-co del norte”, where there’s not one decent Italian, seafood or german restaurant, but there ARE 15,000 mex ones. Where “breakfast burritos” are very nearly your only choice for breakfast. You try living down here rather that in your midwest whiteopia and see how you feel after a year or two.

Actually, some of the worst Mexican food I ever had was in Alba-turkey NM. Bleeeeccchhhh :gaah:I prefer to cook my own. At least you're not in the mid-west or down south where they consider Taco Johns haute cuisine. :kk2:

At least in Colorado you can get all of your favorites, including really decent Tex-Mex.

Well, the local HEB here still looks like a war zone. I went yesterday. Only tomato sauce/diced and some odd beans for canned goods, zero soups, zero canned meats, zero flour, zero yeast, 40% cerials, zero paper products of any kind. They did have a good selection of meats and produce. Milk about 60%

I'm a fajitas person myself. Homemade tortilla, grilled marinated chicken thinly sliced, roasted onions and green peppers served with a handful of cheddar cheese. Add a bit of thick salsa for taste

I don't know if its mex, tex-mex or american but its good

You can make your own refried beans in a pinch from canned beans such as pinto or black beans. Drain and mash em until they are the consistency you like your beans. You can season to your preference as well if they aren't already seasoned in the can. I've done it with just about every bean that I've found canned including pigeon peas, white beans, red/kidney beans, limas, black eyed peas (aka redneck caviar), garbanzos, you name it.

And while we are on the subject, you can make desserts from tortillas as well. Have one of those sandwich presses or willing to do it the old fashioned way in a skillet? Take a tortilla, favorite pie filling, top with another tortilla and then brown/heat through. Top with whatever you like … cinnamon and sugar, custard sauce, chocolate sauce, hazelnut spread, just get creative.

I used to make my husband a kind of pecan pie tortilla pre-diabetes. Now I try and avoid making that stuff because even though I am the one that was diagnosed, I don't want to encourage them to get diagnosed either since it is all genetic apparently. But if they want to fix it then I just look the other way … so long as they clean up their mess. (grin)

Got this off of Facebook.

Easy!!!

Bread shortage?
This is the easiest kind of bread you can make. Costs pennies and can get you through these strange times, my family lived off these when the pickings were slim.
Navajo Flatbread:
Makes 6
2 cups flour
1 - 1 1/4cup of lukewarm water
1 table spoon baking soda
1 tsp kosher salt
1 table spoon oil/butter/shortening
Mix dry ingredients together and add most water, mix and add water until it has the consistency of tacky pizza dough.
Knead for a few minutes.
Let rest in greased bowl for 30- 60 minutes.
Divide into 6 pieces and roll out on floured surface thin. (Tortilla thickness)
Hear griddle to 350F.
Cook until golden brown spots and flip, cooking until done.
They can be made ahead and kept under a flour towel or frozen for later use.
Hope this helps.

Another alternative to tortillas if you can't find them in the store is by buying the Pillsbury biscuits in those pop'em rolls.

When you flatten them out good and then fry them up, they taste just like my home made Indian fry bread.

Shhhhh... Lol!

It's also a great way to have fun, introducing cooking to kids. V

Found a hole in my preps today... feminine hygiene. Not for me, but for my daughter. YIKES! Got up this morning and noticed the empty box in the recycle. Fortunately, we were able to order some for pickup, but there were notes all over the site about shortages.

Squashed biscuits also make a nifty pizza crust. When I was a scout leader in a different life that's how I got the youngest ones to learn how to cook outdoors in a cast iron skillet … a kind of individual camp pizza.

I try to keep in mind that no matter how much i read and plan the future will be unlike anything i expected. Maybe not better or worse but different.
The article also made me think about the employees that are still plugging away. Has anyone seen reports of employees bugging out? In my area i haven't noticed a lack of employees but i would imagine when bodies start piling up and people get their government check, the retail pay may not be worth the risk.
3 people quit at my hubby's store last week. :(

I went to my local Sams Club today. Picked up some milk. I got lucky and was able to just walk in, no line. When I first pulled up there were a few people standing in line but by the time I got to the door they had let them in. There were a lot of holes in the store. There were a lot of only one per customer signs. I did find rice and flour but only in the 25 pound sizes. There were no eggs except in the 5 dozen size. I had hoped to pick up some boxes of dehydrated hash browns but there were not any. It was good to get out. The last time I went out was 10 days ago except to exercise my dog, my husband and myself. So far I don't mind staying home but I do miss work. I found a good recipe for tortillas at King Arthur flour in the bread recipe area. Home made tortillas are so much better then store bought.

I forget where I posted this at, might even be this thread, but it is worth repeating.

In the UK the rationing during and after WW2 lasted 14 years. It didn't stop until about 1955. How applicable that is to this situation is unknown at this time but I suggest people need to be ready to have "holes" in inventory for some time to come. Not because we can't get things up and running but because of political misadventure where we aren't allowed to get things back up and running.
