US says Assad used chemical weapons

By MATTHEW LEE and JULIE PACE
— Jun. 13 6:09 PM EDT

FILE - In this April 30, 2013, file photo, President Barack Obama answers questions during his new conference in the Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House in Washington, Tuesday, April 30, 2013. U.S. officials said June 13, 2013, that the Obama administration has concluded that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime has used chemical weapons against the opposition seeking to overthrow him, crossing what Obama called a 'red line'. (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais, File)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has conclusive evidence that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime has used chemical weapons against opposition forces seeking to overthrow the government, crossing what President Barack Obama has called a "red line" that would trigger greater American involvement in the crisis, the White House said Thursday.

Obama deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said Obama was planning to step up military assistance to opposition forces in Syria in response to the use of the nerve gas sarin. But he would not outline what specifically the U.S. planned to provide or how quickly the increased aid would arrive.

"We've prepared for many contingencies in Syria," Rhodes said. "We are going to make decisions on further actions on our own timeline
."

However, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told reporters on Capitol Hill Thursday that he had been told Obama was "going to provide arms to the rebels."

Thursday's announcement followed a series of urgent meetings at the White House this week that revealed deep divisions within the administration over U.S. involvement in Syria's fierce civil war. While some State Department officials have been pressing for more robust action, advisers close to Obama are wary of sending weapons and ammunition into a war zone where Hezbollah and Iranian fighters are backing Assad's armed forces, and al-Qaida-linked extremists back the rebellion.

The White House said the Assad regime had used chemical weapons, including sarin, on a small scale multiple times in the last year. Up to 150 people have been killed in those attacks, the White House said, constituting a small percentage of the 93,000 people killed in Syria over the last two years.

The Obama administration announced in April that it had "varying degrees of confidence" that sarin had been used in Syria. But they said at the time that they had not been able to determine who was responsible for deploying the gas. (My personal comment: there is a reason they never would announce the results of the chem signature that shows whose it was...if people would think about it, but easier to agree and blame Assad.)

The more conclusive findings announced Thursday were aided by evidence sent to the United States by France, which, along with Britain, announced it had determined that Assad's government had used chemical weapons in the two-year conflict.

Obama has said repeatedly that the use of chemical weapons would cross a "red line" and constitute a "game changer" for U.S. policy on Syria, which until now has focused entirely on providing the opposition with nonlethal assistance and humanitarian aid.

The White House said Congress has been notified of the new U.S. chemical weapons determination, as have international allies. Obama will discuss the assessments, along with broader problems in Syria, next week during the G-8 summit in Northern Ireland.

Obama is also expected to press Russian President Vladimir Putin, Assad's most powerful backers, to drop his political and military support for the Syrian government.

"We believe that Russia and all members of the international community should be concerned about the use of chemical weapons," Rhodes said.

The U.S. has so far provided the Syrian rebel army with rations and medical supplies. In April, the administration made a decision in principle to expand its military support to the opposition to include defensive items like night vision goggles, body armor and armored vehicles. That step was announced by Secretary of State John Kerry.

The composition of the defensive military equipment is still being determined in consultation with the opposition military leadership and other nations that are supplying similar material.

US To Propose No-Fly Zone Over Syria, "Concludes" Use Of Chemical Weapons Against Rebels

It seems the red-line has been crossed. The New York Times is reporting that:

*U.S. CONCLUDES SYRIA USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS AGAINST REBELS: NYT, and
*NYT SAYS EUROPEAN OFFICIALS REACH SAME CONCLUSION ON SYRIA

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-...concludes-use-chemical-weapons-against-rebels

And along side that finding, as part of (or justification for?) the arming of the
Syrian rebels, the WSJ reports that the US Military is calling for a limited no-fly
zone inside Syria. The seriousness of this escalation must be put in the context of
a desperately-needed distraction for the current administration - which makes
the decisions being made even more concerning in their potential for extremes.

Via The Wall Street Journal,

A U.S. military proposal for arming Syrian rebels also calls for a limited no-fly
zone inside Syria that would be enforced from Jordanian territory to protect
Syrian refugees and rebels who would train there, according to U.S. officials.

Asked by the White House to develop options for Syria, military planners have
said that creating an area to train and equip rebel forces would require keeping
Syrian aircraft well away from the Jordanian border.

To do that, the military envisages creating a no-fly zone stretching up to 25
miles into Syria which would be enforced using aircraft flown from Jordanian
bases and flying inside the kingdom, according to U.S. officials.

Sources: U.S. to acknowledge Syria crossed 'red line' with use of chemical weapons

From Barbara Starr, CNN Pentagon Correspondent

updated 5:12 PM EDT, Thu June 13, 2013

Washington (CNN) -- Congress has been notified that the United States will acknowledge that Syria used chemical weapons on a small scale multiple times and that a "red line" has been crossed, congressional sources told CNN on Thursday.

The intelligence community has concluded that sarin gas was used in the Syrian civil war, and that between 100 and 150 people died as a result, a senior intelligence official said.

Earlier this year, the United States said its intelligence analysts had concluded "with varying degrees of confidence" that chemical weapons had been used in the Syrian civil war. But President Barack Obama said "intelligence assessments alone are not sufficient."

CNN's Jessica Yellin contributed to this report.

Newspapers claimed on Thursday that two kilograms of sarin gas, which is usually
used for making bombs and was banned by the UN in 1991, had been found in
the homes of suspects detained in the southern provinces of Adana and Mersin.

Twelve suspects were caught by the police on Monday. The reports claimed that
the al-Nusra members had been planning a bomb attack for Thursday in Adana
but that the attack was averted when the police caught the suspects. Along with
the sarin gas, the police seized a number of handguns, grenades, bullets and
documents during their search. Five of the suspects were released later on
Thursday.

CNN states that the congress has been notified and CNN is talking to John McCain right now. Pray, those who do. This is bad news.

U.S. Sen. John McCain, who has repeatedly called on the administration to step up its support of the rebels, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that the rebels need anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons.

"They need a lot more military assistance," McCain said, adding that the United States and its allies also need to "establish a 'no-fly' zone to create a safe area" within Syria.

"You can't do it with half measures. You can't do it with just supplying weapons," he said.

McCain said the options were not ideal and a response will not be easy. But doing nothing, he said, would be catastrophic.

Yep. The Russians have made it incredibly clear that intervention is not going to be allowed without challenge, and the O is feeling a desperate urge to distract us and is likely being urged to use the Syria crisis to do that. We, the People, are between a rock and a hard place.

I guess maybe I am very religious because I cant not think about Bible prophecy and how we are headed toward multiple prophecies in the Bible. Some are Psalm 83 and Ezekiel 38 and 39. I study prophecy quite extensively from every point of view possible that is written by various authors. I also study it in the Bible and commentaries. I am sure there are those here on timebomb who are thinking the same thing. I am praying about this development.

Syria crossed ‘red line’ using chemical weapons on rebels – White House

Russia Today

http://rt.com/news/us-claims-assad-chemical-weapons-671/

American officials say they have confirmed that the Syrian government has used
chemical weapons against the insurgency seeking to remove it, asserting that the
move crosses a "red line."

An internal memorandum circulating within the Obama administration has
assessed that chemical weapons, most likely the nerve gas sarin, were used
multiple times in battle against the Syrian rebels.

The “intelligence community assesses that the Assad regime has used chemical
weapons on a small scale against the opposition multiple times in the last year,”
according to that memo, as cited by The New York Times.

White House officials speculated over evidence that nerve gas had been used as
of April, but that evidence is now being called “definitive” – with Congressional
sources describing the conclusion as crossing the “red line” for US military
intervention as previously defined by the president.

According to officials who spoke with the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, the US
military is currently considering a proposal for arming factions of the Syrian
insurgency – as well as establishing a limited no-fly zone over the country to be
enforced from nearby Jordanian territory.

That no-fly zone could stretch for up to 25 miles into Syrian territory, and would
be set up in a bid to train and equip rebel forces and protect refugees, officials
said.

A no-fly zone would not require the destruction of Syrian antiaircraft batteries,
according to the accounts cited in American media. The White House could
alternatively authorize the arming and training of the Syrian opposition in Jordan
without a no-fly zone.

Congress was being notified of the conclusions over chemical weapons use in the
country on Thursday in classified documents. Findings were corroborated by
evidence sent to the US by France, which along with Britain claimed that Assad’s
forces had used chemical weapons.

In a conference call to reporters on Thursday, the White House said that the
intelligence community estimates that as many as 150 people, or about 0.16 per
cent (0.0016) of the 93,000 reported deaths in the Syrian conflict, could have
been a result of chemical weapons used by pro-Assad forces.

The White House said during the same call that the US “will make decisions on
our own timeline" regarding the next steps on Syria. President Obama will
consult with G8 partners, including Russia, about Syria next week.

Republican senators John McCain and Lindsay Graham called on the US to
provide "lethal assistance, especially ammunition & heavy weapons" to Syria’s
rebels on Thursday.

“The President must rally an international coalition to take military actions to
degrade Assad’s ability to use airpower and ballistic missiles and to move and
resupply his forces around the battlefield by air,” said a joint statement by the
pair.

If chemical weapons were used, it was by the so called 'rebels' aka Islamic extremists. I too think they should be exterminated with extreme prejudice. Any group that wantonly murders women and children for any reason, needs to be destroyed.

American involvement into that conflict won't change anything that you mentioned. What's going on in syria is "Arab team #1" versus "Arab Team #2". We need to stay out of it and deal with who ever wins in the end in whatever way which will benefit us the most. If the conflict spreads to Israel then we need to leave Israel alone so that they can clean up the mess in any way they deem necessary. Our involvement will just make matters worse.

Put the above quote together with this following article (that Shinmen quoted on another thread) from Newsmax.

He tended to discount it totally only because of the source. (however, I remember when Newsmax was up there with Drudge resepct-wise). However, ask yourself---does it make sense? NOTE---not in a "REAL" meaning, but in a "let's create a false flag to usher in our agenda" sort of meaning---if you look at it THAT way, then this makes PERFECT sense---and given his anointedone-ness bowing to the Saudi king and letting off that little freudian slip about "my Muslim faith", I can TOTALLY see this---

but if he DOES do this, he will have signed America's death warrant ("Alas, Babylon!')---

The events surrounding Syria, Egypt, Russia and Iran suggest a clear link to a back door deal in which the White House has effectively green-lighted the pre-invasion buildup of Arab / Russian military assets in preparation for a war with Israel.

A war that will include the release of nuclear weapons – also authorized by the White House.

Today, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey testified that the Special Forces unit was not ordered to stand down. General Dempsey claimed that the meaning of “stand down’’ was as simple as “don’t do anything”. Rather, they were in fact “ordered” to perform their mission; a mission consisting of receiving the wounded at the airport in Tripoli.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff effectively testified to Congress that an elite special forces unit was better suited to the role of airport medic as opposed to combat unit engaged in the rescue of a sitting U.S. Ambassador. For those that remember the narrative that help simply could not arrive in time it should be noted that Benghazi and Tripoli are both in Libya – not more than a few hours driving distance from each other.

To recap – an elite army Special Forces unit was ordered to remain in Tripoli to assist with casualties from the Benghazi attack, rather than actually rescue American no more than 30-45 minutes away by helicopter (Benghazi is a little over 300 miles from Tripoli).

Former top diplomat in Tripoli, Greg Hicks, had testified that before the House panel that the Special Forces unit was told to stand down. The question of the ordered stand down became a repeated call of the congressional hearings. Yet, the MSM never bothered to help connect the dots on what a stand down actually meant. Rather, the public was allowed to assume that call for assistance were simply denied.

Today changes everything. It is the first sign that Benghazi is starting to slip from the control of the White House. The culpability of the stand down order has been buried, masked over, swept away and ignored in hopes that it would be missed.

Today witnessed a White House that is scrambling to annihilate a narrative that they have tried to ignore.

Mr. President – why did you order the execution of Ambassador Chris Stevens? What back-door deal are you trying to protect?

Did Ambassador Chris Stevens deliver your authorization for the invasion of Israel?

Did you cover-up the transfer on nuclear weapons from Russia to Iran?

Did the Ambassador confirm your authorization for the release of those nuclear weapons against Israel?

I for one will continue to ask these questions, Mr. President.
