Seed Radish seeds

I finally had radishes grow for the very first time this year. They were a long variety, breakfast radish maybe. They got woody kind of fast, so I didn't bother pulling all of them out. To my surprise, what was left in the ground grew and produced seed pods.

Now if I could get some carrots to go to seed, I'd be really happy.

Me too! I wish I could remember for sure what kind I planted, but the few I got were really good. They were pretty mild compared to the regular round ones. I've never really liked radishes, but these were so good. I'm going to have to plant earlier, and really keep an eye on them next year to get them before they go bad.

Dinghy, carrots need two years for their full life cycle. The first year they grow as you may have grown them. Then they grow new tops and their seed stalks the second year.

If there are bitter winters one might dig them up, store them over the winter and then replant the following spring, to get seeds. I've never done this, just read about it.

Thanks Martinhouse. I put 4 carrots back in the ground to see if they will re-grow next year. Hopefully we won't have a bad enough winter to kill them.

Did you see Rabbits post about carrots further down the page? She says you can cut the tops off of the carrots and plant them and they will go ahead and produce seeds instead of waiting another year.

Thanks Sherry. I have done that a couple of times in the last month or so. I'm very anxious to see how it works.
