Lonestar brought up a worthy question recently: should Politico be added to the proscribed sources list? I wanted to give my thoughts on it and put it out there for discussion.

My thoughts:

I have never favored "censoring" news sources. The current members of the list are either deliberate hoax sites, or ones that promulgate pure woo. (Of course there is the handful that cannot even be mentioned.)

I cannot STAND the pure Marxist drivel promulgated by them.

We have several categories of "proscribed": banned content, will be moved immediately, and will be moved "after awhile."

If we added Politico, I'd vote for it to be in the "moved immediately" group.

HOWEVER, occasionally they post something worth reading. Rare, true, but once in a while.

The caveat: We don't want to "ban" so many news sources that all we're left with are Breitbart, Bongino (replaced Drudge, who went liberal) and Fox.

So, let me know what you think.

I haven't seen much worth posting at Politico in some time. They're usually of a leftward bent like CNN and MSNBC, with the exception that VERY occasionally, there will be an informative article.

I use RT frequently as they report a lot of things that the US, Ministry of Propaganda tends to ignore.

Normally, the post is prefaced with something to note that Russian spin is present.

Politico is a different animal tho, purely an outlet for commie drivel.

I hate to ban a source, their content is good for opposition research...if nothing else.

I've found useful articles and info there, but it requires discretion. Occasionally they forget to add the left bias and put out decent news. Also their "inside the beltway" political insights can be interesting. Sorry for kicking an (unseen) anthill.

I generally don't visit the Politico site, in part because I don't agree with their politics, and in part because they don't let you see the site unless you unblock it in NoScript. If a site wants to run scripts on my computer, I generally don't visit such sites.

But I don't like seeing any site banned from being referenced, so long as it is clearly identified, and marked as perhaps being questionable.

If someone takes the time to read and post an article on the main even from Politico, then it should be available for a time, then moved. Like Millwright said, sometimes the info is good oppo research.

I said leave it be.

Like you said, we don't want to become an echo chamber. We've already got people questioning stories from CNN and CNBC. The bias is a problem with any "major news outlet" these days, but there's the issue of woo coming out of the "alternative" sources. I know there are people on this board who have a problem with Zero Hedge and they're about as conservative as you can get.

:)They fall out automatically after awhile when their news turns to mush :poop:. I cannot remember the last time I looked at Drudge-- so ridiculous.
Politico was legit once--but they were never high on my list--they went the way of Drudge,

On a positive note new ones have come up lately.
But then gardening has become big again this summer.
Youtube is an awesome source of interesting news. I recommend Juan Browne on the blancolirio channel if you are wanting technical or aviation related news.

I don't use Politico as a news source, because they are pretty biased, but I do use them as a resource for accumulated polling information, state election information, and election night return info. They are about the fastest response and quite reliable when it comes to stats/data. Always the most usable format.

They are more "click bait" to me.

I also hate seeing all the # BS from Twitter, which is often just rumors from random people with no verification.

I never believe anything I see from Politico if it can't be verified somewhere else, and if it can I don't need them to begin with.

As a person who posts frequently on an occasional ongoing thread, I can say that I rarely post a new thread on Main any more. All the rules have had a chilling effect and it has become a hassle and annoyance. If called on a "violation" now, I simply delete the thread. Not worth messing with my calm.

People have to realize that news gatherers are doing them a favor by sharing information that they may have found interesting. It takes effort to research, remove ads and format articles/sources. Don't make it harder by burdening the poster with more rules than are necessary.

I used to feel that way originally. I have come to appreciate the twitter offerings as live reports from the various events AS THEY UNFOLD. The rest of the tweets I don't care about one way or the other. But without twitter feeds, WHERE WILL YOU GET LIVE INFO FROM? The meeeeedia?

Freakin spare me.

The problem I have with ZeroHedge is that half of the stuff they post is commercially biased advertising written by some trader, newsletter writer/peddler, or gold-seller...and people don't include an actual source, only that it's by a Tyler.

Zero Hedge is a treasure for it's comment section. Not as good as it was, but still chuckle-worthy.

Sometimes pure leftist drivel has to be posted so people understand just how insane leftist are.
Occasionally, perhaps. But with a disclaimer, IMO.

But when an article is posted, "as is", and is Pure-D, unadulterated Communist agitprop bullshit, and posted without any sort of disclaimer, I really question the poster's discernment and or motive.

I vote that we leave Politico at the same level as any other news/opinion site. Yes they have a leftist slant to their articles but IMO its good to hear opinions which differ from your own. The more facts you hear and the more sides to the story that you are exposed to then the more well rounded your arguments will be.

Since I was the one who started the whole issue I voted other. At this point I won't post anymore articles from Politico. I'll leave the snark out at this point. I'll leave the decisiin up to the staff.

I've not been to Politico in years. I can hear all the leftist crap I want from the leftist cable news outlets.

Do as member sentiment dictates.

Yes, you started it. But your point was valid. I depend on me,EBRs to think of things to make this place better, or raise issues that need to be discussed. My views are frequently skewed since I’ve been here so long, like trying to identify an elephant with a microscope.
