Question regarding emails (spam)

I've been getting a lot of emails (spam) that is addressed to email addresses that are not mine. I have anti virus software and I ran a scan - no virus.

What causes this.

I am really really sick and tired of those MEDS ROLEX LARGER PENIS spams.

I don't even have a penis.

:lol:

First, what anti-virus proggie do you use? Do you update it regularly? Next, what is your email client? (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc)? I use Mozilla Thunderbird, and 98% of all SPAM goes right into the JUNK folder; I never even see it. Also, Thunderbird isn't susceptible to virus attacks like the MS products (and it's free).

As to your specific question, in many cases the spam is just shotgunned out into the web. Not specifically addressed to anyone.

Thank you Dennis for replying.

ETrust & EZ Firewall {updates?: guilty - I don't do this}

{I don't do any of the Microsoft updates anymore because the last time I did
it screwed up my computer very very badly}

Mozilla Firefox Browser

Outlook Express for Email (I have Roadrunner Broadband)

I'll check into the Thunderbird.

Anti-virus and anti-spyware programs should be updated once a week (at least). Anything older and you're unprotected. I highly recommend AVG for antivirus, and Ad-Aware and Spybot for anti-spyware. All are free and available off the web.

Unfortunately the "To:" line that shows up in your email client has little or no bearing on the actual addressee of an email that has been sent. The way the SMTP protocol works, the actual addressing of an email is handled at the server level (MAIL FROM, RCPT TO), and the "To:" line that you read is only a line of text included at the beginning of the message and then displayed by your mail client.

It sucks, but that's how it is. For the same reasons, you really can't trust the "Date:" header or the "From:" header (the "From " header, note the space instead of a colon, is slightly more accurate).

So to sum up, yes, the spam you're getting is "addressed" to you, even if it doesn't look like it. And you're only getting it because your email address is out there somewhere, these people go on volume, not quality of contact.

Sorry.

You should run Ad Aware, and Spybot too, I am told some of that spyware can get you more spam. Both are free, just type the name into google. Go down load them and run them (put them on auto run every nite).
