Queen of Denmark Margrethe II announces abdication live on TV

31st December 2023, 02:02 EST

Denmark's Queen Margrethe II has announced her surprise abdication in a new year TV address.

She will abdicate on 14 January, which will be 52 years to the day since she became queen.

"I will leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik," she announced.

The 83-year-old is the longest serving monarch in Danish history, taking the throne after the death of her father King Frederik IX in 1972.

She revealed the decision was made after a period of reflection following surgery on her back in early 2023.

"The surgery naturally gave rise to thinking about the future - whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation," she said.

"I have decided that now is the right time," she added, and offered her thanks to the Danish public for their support over the years.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen thanked the queen for her service.

"On behalf of the entire population, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Her Majesty The Queen for her lifelong dedication and tireless efforts for the Kingdom," she said in a statement.

"Queen Margrethe is the epitome of Denmark and throughout the years has put words and feelings into who we are as a people and as a nation."

Unlike British royal tradition, there will be no formal crowning ceremony for Crown Prince Frederik, who is 55. Instead, his accession will be announced from Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen on the day.

He will take her place as King of Denmark and head of state in the country - which is a constitutional monarchy - as well as in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Queen Margrethe is a popular figure in Denmark, and many Danes had expected her to remain on the throne until her death.

"She is to us what Queen Elizabeth was to you," Danish journalist Tine Gotzsche told the BBC.

Queen Margrethe attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, and they celebrated their respective jubilees in the same year.

More than a decade ago, Queen Margrethe reflected that she was inspired by the late British Queen "that I must somehow understand that I must dedicate my life to my nation like she has done, and in that way she has been very important to me."

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth, Queen Margrethe had become the world's only remaining female sovereign.

Affectionately known as Daisy, Queen Margrethe is known for her smoking habits and rejection of mobile phones and the internet - declaring herself "very happy" without them.

Gotzsche said the Danish royal transition is a moment of mixed celebration and sadness.

"She has always been there, she has been ageing with all of us," she said, but added: "the Crown Prince is in a very good position to take over, the succession is laid out - it's very logical, and it absolutely makes sense."

During her time on the throne, Queen Margrethe continued to work as an artist and was well known for her love of the arts.

She also studied in the UK, spending time at Cambridge's Girton College and the London School of Economics.

Each year on New Year's Eve, she delivers a speech broadcast on television.

This year, aside from the announcement, she also spoke of the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as the importance of addressing climate change.

Facing similar challenges of modern society as other royal families across Europe, the Danish royal family has decided to slim down its number of royals.

This led to a very public rift last year after Crown Prince Frederik's younger brother Prince Joachim's children were stripped of their royal titles.

Young, smoking butt. LOL

Two strong female leaders who were/are much loved by their countries. Now Queen Elizabeth is gone and Charles is on the throne. Not as well liked or revered by or attuned to the people. He's a weak figurehead.

I wonder what the Dane's upcoming King Frederick will be like? Strong and revered, like his mother? Or weak, woke, and less revered like Charles?

Well, from all accounts the apple named Frederick didn't fall far at ALL from the Tree named Margrethe.

His rep is one of strength, and he is WELL-received as Crown Prince.

This news is quite surprising. Like Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Margrethe publicly stated she would never abdicate. Crown Prince Frederik was involved in a cheating scandal just a few months ago. There is speculation that she is abdicating now to force him to grow up or to keep the VERY popular Crown Princess Mary from leaving him. The Crown Princess has earned the public’s trust and respect through years of hard work and dedication to her role.

Margrethe’s health hasn’t been great in the last year. She had major back surgery in February. This may have also played a part in her decision.

She has been lining things up for a while though. Last year she removed the prince & princess titles from her second son’s children. She said she was doing it so that CP Frederik would not have to when he became king. She understands that a slimmed down monarchy is the only way forward. Prince Joachim & his wife reacted (as you would expect Harry & Meghan to) with a very public temper tantrum.

Photos of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark entertaining Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova on a night out in Madrid have emerged.
The heir to the Danish throne and the reality TV star enjoyed a night out in the Spanish capital last month, and the reports sparked affair allegations.

Now, pictures that first appeared in Spanish magazine Lecturas last week have been made public. The pictures show the pair taking a stroll together in a park before going to an art museum and enjoying an exhibit.

The royal and the former daughter-in-law of the billionaire Duchess of Alba are seen spending hours together without Princess Mary. At one point, the pair headed to the model and socialite’s home, where they changed clothes before heading out again for dinner.

When the photos first emerged, Ms Casanova released a statement denying any form of romantic relationship had taken place between herself and the royal.

According to reports, Frederik and Ms Casanova both went to her apartment building separately. They then remerged two hours later, again separately, before both getting into the same white car. Both had changed into evening wear.

They then drove to Spanish restaurant El Corral de la Moreria where they watched flamenco dancers. The performance didn’t finish until 12pm and Frederik and Ms Casanova stayed until 1am. The following morning, the Spanish magazine claims the Prince was taken to the airport via a car where he flew home to Denmark.

After the affair allegations first emerged, Ms Casanova threatened to take legal action in a statement where she condmed the accusations.

A statement from the socialite said: “I categorically deny the statements that suggest a romantic relationship between Prince Frederik and me. Any statement of this type not only completely lacks the truth but also misrepresents the facts in a malicious manner.”

She added: “This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the pertinent steps to protect my right to honour, truth and privacy.”

The development comes after Prince Frederik and Princess Mary have been putting on a united front over the last week. They appeared together in Copenhagen on Wednesday, hours after news broke of the alleged cheating scandal and seemed to be all smiles.

The couple, who tied the knot in 2004 and share four children together, have been hosting Spanish King Felipe and Queen Letizia on their three-day state visit to Denmark.

Meanwhile, Princess Mary also appeared to pay tribute to her husband with a sweet but subtle statement during a recent outing.

Maybe they are friends. Not beyond the realm of possibility. My friend for years was a guy with whom I shared a love of movies and books with. My DH was perfectly happy not to have to go to movies. Plus he was glad I was with someone who was more than capable of handling trouble. He hated going to the show and his idea of reading material was the Welding journal.

He's sure got a freshly effed look on his face in that last pic.

My husband is Danish and we love the Queen. Saddened by the news, but we think it is the right decision. May she have a long, peaceful retirement.

My FIL worked for the King after the war as a landscaper and gardener. The King often put on old clothes and came out to putter around in the garden, often accompanied by his daughter. My FIL really loved that little girl.
