PREP PSA Watch Carefully When Frozen Things Begin To Thaw and Tip

Well our water has been out since Monday. Yesterday saw temperatures rise above freezing and now I have leaks in the attic showing up.

This is a reminder when you turn water back on or after it thaws to check everything for leas. The sooner you catch a leak the less damage it will do.

Make sure you have the ability and know how to turn your water off.

I was spoiled because I had a water softener with a shutoff valve but it was frozen open.

Also I got complacent/lazy with my water spares and after using them I did not replace them.

It is amazing how fast two people can go through water. Figure how much you think you will need and double/triple it.

Fill up the bathtubs before the freeze hits. Shoveling snow to fill the bathtub is quite exerting.

Keep your gutters cleaned out. I have icicles everywhere now.

Get on the plumbers list early. In a widespread event, the list gets.quite long.

And watch out for ice dams on the roof as well. The water will back up behind the ice and get in the roof that way as well. Especially as the homes and buildings down there are not insulated as well as up north generally.

I fully expect insulation to go through the roof as a result. The stuff works for both cold, and heat.

I’ve been extremely lucky. No power outage, water only out 36-ish hours, no significant ice dams. My car cover was destroyed by the ice however. Evidently the material isn’t designed for freezing temps. It was 5 years old anyway. I’ll have to order a new one. That’s it in terms of damage. I was able to do dishes, laundry, and shower today. All three were desperately necessary.

Our city just got water restored yesterday (5 days) and literally thousands of people discovered burst pipes in walls, ceilings, under slabs and in lawns. They had to shut it back off to get water turned off to all those with extremely high water usage readings. I've worked every single day throughout this. Thank God DH grew up in Oklahoma and knows how to drive in this crap. It's pretty damned hard working 8-10 hour shifts with no bathroom. At home I'm on a well and we made sure that our well was heavily protected. Our temporary living quarters (5th wheel camper) is also a 4 seasons and the underbelly and everything is also well insulated and heated. We had the generators all fueled up and on standby but never lost electricity.

Another PSA:
If you suspect that the water pump in the motor home may be frozen, take your wife's advice and use the blow dryer she brings you. Don't go into the garage and fetch your 10 gigawatt heat gun. It will melt the poor little plastic pump casing. The wife, she will look at you with much contempt. The repair parts from Amazon will take much time to come to your house. The shame, it will engulf you.

I had two neighbors come over when I told them of my leaks in the bathroom attic.

I had the water shutoff and today the temps got high enough to melt everything.

My neighbors got in my attic which I could not do and we turned the water on.

The leaks do not appear to be getting worse so we left it on so far. DW got to take a shower and really enjoyed it. We are going to watch it tonight and hope for the best. The plumbers lists have us two to three weeks out.

It is really nice to have neighbors help you out.

I saw two instances of pay it forward where the person being checked out left extra money to help pay for the person behind them. It was very inspiring.

There was a person in my neighborhood who posted on the neighborhood board they had extra firewood. They brought me some so I had a real nice fire tonight, first one in a while.

That is a community I want to be part of and contribute to.

Water going like crazy. Water has been out out maybe 3 days. So far in drinking, washing, toothbrusing, cooking, dogs, flushing toilet, dishwashing, we have went through over 120 17 oz bottles.

How many of you in the house? Besides the dogs? That's really not that bad
