CheeseMaking!!!

Why hadn't I thought of this? Holding the temp of the milk on the stove requires almost constant checking. This would make it so much easier.

I found 2 new sections last night that I had not previously seen.........a month by month chart on what is good to dry all year round , with sections on left overs and more recipe ideas!

Auntnuts, thanks so much for posting that link. There are LOTS of things there that I hadn't thought of doing, and I have been dehydrating for years.

While I was doing a lot of hiking, I used to make up my own dehydrated meals instead of buying the expensive commercial ones.

Here are a couple more ideas from that site that I can use.

Recrisping Crackers and Other Foods
There is no need to throw away crackers, chips, cookies or cereal that have become stale. Recrisp those items by placing them in a single layer on the drying trays and drying them for 1 hour at 145ºF.

Drying Bread for Bread Crumbs
Put your extra breads of all types in your Excalibur to dry for making bread crumb recipes. Dry slices, burger buns, dog rolls, and other breads until they are crispy. Crumble by hand or process for a few seconds in your food processor. Store in air tight containers until needed. Add your favorite herbs and spices to create stuffing mixes for side dishes or poultry stuffing.

I am going to enjoy browsing through that site!

I'm glad you are finding it usefull Tadpole..............They offer a couple books for sale which I am sure have loads more in them, but the site itself is very informative.

My dehydrators are just the cheapie ones, but I have 3 of them going at most times.now with all these other ideas........the dehydrators won't get much of a break :)

Auntnuts, I have a couple of good dehydrating cookbooks, but this site is just FUN!

I also have a cheapie dehydrator. Years ago I started out with the Ronco, then went to American Harvestor (the smaller one). I burned out the motor in two of them, but keep buying them because I have all the extra trays, herb screens, fruit roll-up trays, etc. that fit them.

The new American Harvestor has the fan on top instead of on the bottom. It doesn't seem to dry as fast, but maybe it won't burn out as fast due to food falling down into the fan.

I DREAM of a big, professional dehydrator!

OMG, I recently bought an excaliber at a garage sale for $10. I didn't realize what a good price that was until now. It doesn't have a book with it, but it seems to work. It has 5 trays and the temperature setting. It doesn't have a timer, but that's okay. I didn't even realize what I had.
Thanks so much for this site. Now I can learn more about my garage sale treasure that I was so dumb about. I don't know how old it is, but I guess as long as it works, that's all that matters. Now, maybe I can get busy and do some dehydrating.
