BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Elizabethtown Police Department says they received reports that suspected skimming devices had been located inside fuel pumps at gas stations.

Police say the first was found at the Scotchman at 101 East Broad Street and the second at the Community Mart at 909 East Broad.

Police say these type of skimming devices are made to capture and store information from cards used at the pump.

They say whoever installed these devices had a key and opened the fuel pump door, installed the skimming device in 30 seconds or less, locked the fuel pump door and planned to return later to retrieve the device.

The investigation is ongoing.

Not a surprise. Gas stations are the last companies going to chip-and-PIN because of the prohibitive costs to the gas stations.

They don't retrieve the device, it stays in there. They either are Bluetooth or Wifi tethered to the Scumsuckers as they drive by during the night and park away from the pumps. Most are Bluetooth, and are easily detectable by scanning the Bluetooth units in range for a certain set of MAC addresses. The guys at Sparkfun have already created both hardware and an Android app to detect them and alert you.

I had an additional credit card issued with a permanent $500.00 limit on it just for gas. I made a label GASOLINE for the front of it. The credit card company was happy to issue it when told what it was for.

I do not want to go thru the trouble of a new credit card when I have automatic payments set up on a card.

If you're getting gas with card OR cash, do it at the pumps closest to the store windows (where someone will be watching).
In our area, these bluetooth enabled skimmers are common; but the pumps that have them are generally the ones closest to the street or furthest away from the front door of the business.

I have a reloadable card I use just for gas, and I also use the skimmer app.

They have been doing this almost as long as the cards have been available... Quite literally decades...

Since we travel frequently, I tried reloadable Visa & MC. Damn pumps won't recognize them, still had to go inside to use them as prepay. Heck, I can use my own CC cards for that and not have the inconvenience of reloading. There is a Texaco near that has their proprietary prepay cards that can only be used at any Texaco, but those are few & far between on the roads out west.

I have several reloadables that I use for different purposes. Usually at least one works.

They seem to like to put them in the parking meter kiosks around here.
Gas pumps always seem to have an anti tamper stickers across the access panel here.
