At least one person was shot during an incident at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise early Wednesday morning.

Officials have released little information on the incident. Boise police in a news release said a police shooting took place there shortly after 2 a.m.

Saint Alphonsus in a news release described it as a “shooting incident” in the ambulance bay near the emergency department.

Boise police said they are searching for two suspects, one of whom is an escaped Idaho Department of Correction prisoner Skylar Meade. They are both “armed and dangerous” and traveling in a gray four-door sedan, possibly a Honda Civic with Idaho license plates, police said.

The hospital was placed on temporary lockdown while police secured the scene, but has since resumed normal operations, according to police. Saint Al’s said it has increased security on campus.

“All patients and staff are safe, the medical center campus is safe and secure,” Saint Al’s said.

Police asked anyone with information to call Ada County Dispatch at 208-377-6790.

Boise police did not respond to the Idaho Statesman’s questions. Saint Al’s declined to provide additional information.

The Boise Police Department said in its news release that “more information will be released soon.”

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office is leading the Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the shooting.

State-wide Blue Alert was issued a little while ago as they are deemed a credible threat to LEO's and the perps are considered armed and dangerous. That is a long time since the incident occurred at 2AM local at the hospital, what took so long?

Update: Officers continue to search for shooting suspects, Three IDOC officers injured

March 20, 2024

Officers across the Treasure Valley are continuing to search for the two suspects mentioned in the previous news release.

This incident began at 2:15 am as Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC) officers had transported IDOC inmate Skylar Meade to Saint Alphonsus for medical treatment. As they were preparing to leave to transport Meade back to IDOC, an unknown suspect attacked and fired at the officers, striking two of them.

Boise Police officers responded to the hospital to reports of an active shooter, with one officer firing his duty weapon at an armed individual near the entrance. That individual was later determined to be an IDOC employee. He was not seriously injured and is receiving treatment for his injuries. The hospital was locked down as officers searched the area for the suspect. A preliminary investigation indicates Meade and the shooting suspect got into a grey four-door sedan and fled the area just prior to Boise Police officers arriving.

Meade has been serving time in IDOC for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with a firearm enhancement and has prior convictions including felony possession of a controlled substance, grand theft, and introduction of contraband into a correctional facility. He has been incarcerated since October 2016 and his most recent sentence was set to end October 2036.

In total, three IDOC officers were injured. One officer, shot by the suspect is in critical but stable condition. The second officer shot by the suspect has serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The third IDOC officer was injured during gunfire from a responding BPD officer and received non-life-threatening injuries.

“This brazen, violent, and apparently coordinated attack on Idaho Department of Corrections personnel, to facilitate an escape of a dangerous inmate, was carried out right in front of the Emergency Department, where people come for medical help, often in the direst circumstances. When BPD officers responded, they believed the shooter was inside the Emergency Department. They immediately entered to address any potential continued threat to Emergency Room staff. I am grateful this harrowing incident did not result in loss of life, and we are monitoring the wounded IDOC officers with great hope for a full and speedy recovery of all involved,” said Chief Ron Winegar. “We caution anyone who may have contact with the suspects involved in this violent attack and escape to call 911 immediately and not confront them personally. They are armed, dangerous, and have shown they are willing to use extreme violence in furtherance of their criminal activity.”

Boise police are leading the search for the two outstanding suspects. The Ada County Sheriff's Office is leading the Ada County Critical Incident Taskforce (CITF) investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Idaho suspected shooter and escaped inmate both in custody after manhunt, officials say

By S. Dev
Updated on: March 21, 2024 / 7:48 PM EDT / CBS News

An escaped inmate and his alleged accomplice, both members of a white supremacist gang, were arrested in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Thursday afternoon after a massive manhunt.

Inmate Skylar Meade escaped from a medical center in Boise early Wednesday morning after Nicholas Umphenour allegedly opened fire on corrections officers who were taking Meade back to prison.

The suspects were located in the Twin Falls area at around 2 p.m. local time Thursday, Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar said at a news conference. After a short vehicle pursuit, the suspects were taken into custody separately. No shots were fired.

Two homicides committed in the last 24 hours in Idaho are being investigated as possibly linked to the suspects, Idaho State Police Lt. Colonel Sheldon Kelley said. The suspects were found driving a Honda Civic that police said belonged to one of the victims.

The homicide victims, both men, were discovered in separate counties — one in Nez Perce and one in Clearwater, the city of Boise disclosed in a press release Thursday afternoon.
The two suspects, Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour.

Once Umphenour was identified as a
potential suspect, investigators looked into his connections to Meade, Josh Tewalt, director of the state's Department of Correction, said at Thursday's conference.
In addition to both being documented members of the white supremacist gang the Aryan Knights, the two men had both periodically lived in the same housing unit in the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, where Umphenour was in custody from December 2020 to January 2024, officials said. They also shared common acquaintances both in and out of custody.
Tewalt said that the suspects' gang involvement didn't necessarily indicate that the escape was a "gang-sanctioned event," adding that the department was monitoring the Aryan Knights in prison "to mitigate the damage that gangs can do."

"Independent of their actions, we work hard every day to try and disrupt any organized criminal activity that happens in our facilities," Tewalt said Thursday.

"Law enforcement believes the capture was successful due to the hundreds of tips from the public and the multiple responding law enforcement agencies," the city of Boise said in its press release.

The three Idaho Department of Correction officers were shot early on March 20, 2024, at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.

Meade engaged in "self-injurious" behavior Tuesday night, after which officers determined he needed to be transferred off-site for care, Tewalt said on Wednesday.
Umphenour attacked and fired at two officers at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center at around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, officials said. A third person, later determined to be a corrections officer, was shot by responding Boise police officers.

One of the injured corrections officers was released from the hospital Wednesday evening, while the two other injured officers remain hospitalized, Tewalt said Thursday.
"They are stable, improving, and I think with today's news their spirits are lifted," Tewalt said, calling the incident a "tough ordeal for corrections family."
