Petition to rename Lynchburg gains traction in light of Black Lives Matter movement

A petition to change the name of Lynchburg has collected over 1,000 signatures in light of the Black Lives Matter movement. (WSET)

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Over 1,000 people have signed a petition to rename the City of Lynchburg.

The City of Lynchburg is named after founder John Lynch.

John Lynch was a Quaker described as progressive for his time in the 1780s, according to Chief Public History Officer Ted Delaney.

"He believed in emancipating slaves," Delaney said. "He had slaves but he freed all of his. He's supporting recolonization, which is sending slaves back to Africa. He did not believe in perpetuating the institution of slavery in this country."

Delaney explains that the term lynching is actually named after Lynch's brother, Charles Lynch.

Charles Lynch would tie British soldiers to a tree and beat them until they cried” Liberty!” which would stop the beating since that meant they agreed with the revolution.

From there it evolved into what we know today -- the racist killings of African Americans.

The petition was started by Daisy Howard, who grew up in Lynchburg.

Howard believes that it is possible to honor the city's founder without using his last name.

"If statues can come down, then problematic names of cities can also change," Howard said. "At the end of the day, it comes down to defending the word Lynch, which I don't think you can defend."

Howard says that her petition comes in light of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Howard, along with others that have signed the petition, are concerned about the negative connotation that could be associated with the city's name.

In order for the name to be officially changed, the proposal would have to make it through Lynchburg's city council.

aaahahahhha!!!...

I was waiting for this one to come up on the radar screen of the "I never invented the wheel" Negro brain.

I've laughed about the name of this town for decades and figured more recently it would piss off some of those special education brains over at BLM sooner or later.

There's going to be a lot of changes in the works.........BLM want it all............they want it all................

If we’re going to start renaming towns, I’m definitely going to have to dust off that passport and find a new place to hang out for awhile...

I want off this bus that’s speeding its way to Crazy Town.

Has anyone thought of the cost of renaming a city? It’s not insignificant.

This will probably snowball. Seriously.
Can I use that metaphor? I don't want to be black-balled, you know. :dvl2:

Sadly, we all can see this name change actually happening, can't we? "Change your name, you bunch of rascists, or we will burn your town down." One more example of the now popular righteous extortion.

Stupid as it is, I bet this happens. Lynchburg's city council has a fairly active black component. They've gotten a 1000 signatures on a petition to consider it. It would be a poke in the eye to Falwell and Liberty University, especially if it gets endorsed by Ralph "Taliban" Northram, if he can take time out from removing statues.

A local boy named Thomas Lynch Jr. signed the Declaration of Independance, should we burn that too?

There was a Lynch at the Alamo. The family reunions are referred to as the Lynch mob. A better bunch of sheepdogs you will never know.

Guess they'll have to stop playing this one...

I deal with a school district in TX in a town called "White Settlement, TX"............I'll bet their town name is going over like a lead balloon with the left these days.

Guess we'll never hear about Jessica Lynch or the Eraserhead movie (written, directed, produced, and edited by David Lynch) ever again, either.

^^^^THIS^^^^

I have seen this in many nightmares.

Eventually, Mt. Rushmore and Stone Mountain GA, will be eradicated.

Thousands of cities, towns, counties, and roads and highways
have to be renamed, buildings, etc. in the quest to remove
White history from the ZUSA.

The big remaining question, what will they do with
the monuments to the presidents in Washington DC,
and what will be the name they choose for DC,
when it is renamed?

All of this of course will be stopped, as long as there are
some Republicans left with a backbone, which ain't many.
As soon as the damocraps, have full control over the ZUSA
federal government, expect the removal of White history
to go into overdrive, and the new South Africa to emerge.

This is not an if, only a when. Whites lost, and there is no
going back, to attempt to regain what has been lost.

Please be safe everyone. We are simply living in the end of days
of the ZUSA. It is only going to get worse, and worse, and worse.

Regards to all.

take a look at this quantum leap in logic:

"Delaney explains that the term lynching is actually named after Lynch's brother, Charles Lynch. Charles Lynch would tie British soldiers to a tree and beat them until they cried” Liberty!” which would stop the beating since that meant they agreed with the revolution.

From there it evolved into what we know today -- the racist killings of African Americans".

ahhh . . . well ohhh-kay then! so just HOW did they pull all that together to come up with this bullshit idea?
