Well I'll be dammed, never around when we have them.
My house is halfway between it and the furthest south reports.
I'll have to ask the wife is she felt it yesterday.

The earthquake was centered northeast of Whitehouse Station

It was on the Ramapo Fault

The shake was felt all around Hunterdon County

The U.S. Geological Survey confirms an earthquake shook parts of Hunterdon County on Thursday afternoon.
The magnitude 2.2 earthquake was centered 2.5 miles north-northeast of Whitehouse Station at 3 p.m. just off Oldwick Road, according to the USGS map. Dozens of reports about the impact were reported from Annandale, Clinton, Glen Gardner, Hampton, Lebanon, Pittstown and Ringoes.

Tewksbury police and New Jersey 101.5 listeners reported feeling the earthquake and hearing a loud explosion. Police were unable to locate the source of the sound of an explosion.
Calls were also reported by police in Chester Township, Clinton Township, Lebanon Township and Washington Township.

So interesting theory to this from someone I know.
Location of quake was 40.6655°N / 74.7547°W
Mile or 2 away is round valley reservoir. It's been drawn down for about 2 years for dam repairs.
Water level has been raised 20 some feet recently.

This is not a new reservoir, been there since 1960.

So 14,977,695,684 call it 15 billion gallons of water added to it.

Mining blasts cause very minor earthqakes daily.
The larger the blast, the larger the quake.
Got some terrorists in caves in the boonies
practicing with their explosives??
No mines around here in probably a 100 years. Copper and some other metals are present in small quantities.

Most the working quarries are loose stone dropped by the glaciers. There are some that blast but not around here. More common in northern NJ where they are breaking up bedrock.

Neither here nor there.
Then that is scary! It lends support to the rumors about upcoming earth changes.

There's a HUGE fault line that goes from upstate NY, actually it starts somewhere in Canada, south down towards Alabama, that's probably even more dangerous than the NMSZ simply due to population density and the age and quality of the infrastructure.

Note that I've had a dream more than once of a monster quake hitting that fault where TN/VA/NC areas.

This is New Jersey being discussed. I grew up there and my first thought wasn't: fracking, mining or natural gas. It was hazardous waste, maybe some kind if left over time goes BOOM?

There's an old joke that NJ has more Super Fund Waste Sites per capita than any place in the US and DC has more lawyers. Jersey got first pick.

This is a known effect of raising or lowering reservoirs.
