PARIS

Police in Paris on Thursday shot dead a knife-wielding man who tried to enter a police station, police union sources said.

Police in Paris have shot dead a man who allegedly tried to enter a police station armed with a knife on the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack.

Shots were fired at the man to prevent him entering the building, a police spokeswoman said.

According to Reuters, the man appeared to be wearing a belt of some sort but it is unclear whether it is explosive.

It is understood that a bomb disposal team has been called to police station in northern Paris.

An eyewitness said two or three shots were heard, AFP reports.

Pictures posted on Twitter show a man in jeans and a grey jacket lying with his arms out at his sides outside the entrance of a Paris police station.

The French broadcaster iTele is reporting that the incident took place at the Goutte d'Or police station in Paris’ 18th district.

A spokesperson for the French interior ministry spokesman said the man reportedly shouted "Aallah Akbar".

The shooting occurred shortly after President Francois Hollande finished a speech in the center of Paris paying homage to police officers killed during recent terrorist attacks.

Mr Hollande said the government was passing new laws and ramping up security, adding that "better surveillance of radicalised citizens" who had returned to France after joining ISIS or other militant groups in Syria and Iraq was needed.

"We must be able to force these people - and only these people - to fulfill certain obligations and if necessary to put them under house arrest," he said

The incident took place on the anniversary of last year's deadly attacks on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in the French capital.

Two French-born brothers killed 11 people inside the the magazine's offices, as well as a Muslim police officer outside, on January 7 2015.

An accomplice later shot and killed another police officer before storming a kosher supermarket, killing four hostages, two days later.

More to follow.

Was Paris Police Station Attack Islamic Terrorism? Suspect Yelled 'Allahu Akbar' Before Being Killed, Officials Say

By Bruce Wright @bctw On 01/07/16 AT 8:33 AM

The incident in Paris that left one man dead Thursday after he attempted to enter a police station while shouting an Arabic phrase is being investigated as an act of terrorism, authorities say. The suspect, who was armed with a knife and wearing what was later determined to be a fake explosive garment, allegedly yelled the words, “Allahu Akbar,” which is Arabic for “God is great,” a phrase often shouted before Islamic militants launch suicide attacks.

The entire episode is "more likely terrorism," a French law enforcement official who requested anonymity because he was not allowed to speak publicly on the matter told the Associated Press. The police shooting took place just hours after President François Hollande’s speech in remembrance of the victims who died exactly one year ago in the deadly attacks on the editorial offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

A “terrorist threat” will continue to linger in France, Hollande told police forces Thursday before the attack at the police station took place. He called for heightened vigilance and surveillance to forestall the radicalization of the country’s citizens who have joined or are contemplating joining Islamic militant groups, such as ISIS.

“We must be able to force these people — and only these people — to fulfill certain obligations and if necessary to put them under house arrest … because they are dangerous,” the French president said, reported the Washington Times.

In addition to sporting what turned out to be a false suicide vest or belt, the suspect in Thursday’s attack, who was not immediately identified, had a bag taped to his body with an electrical wire hanging off his coat, according to French news outlet BFMTV.

After being shot, the suspect's body was lying on the sidewalk while a robotic device approached him in an apparent attempt to detect any explosive devices, or to rule out any other threat.

Foiled Paris Attack: Officials Struggle to ID Knife-Wielding Assailant

by Nancy Ing and F. Brinley Bruton

PARIS — Officials were struggling to determine the identity of the knife-wielding man who was shot dead outside a Paris police station a day after the foiled attack.

"We're faced with an isolated individual," Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins told France Inter radio on Friday.

The prosecutor's office said a terrorism investigation has been opened into the incident, which took place outside the Goutte d'Or police station in the 18th arrondissement.

The suspect was carrying a butcher's knife and shouted "Allahu akbar" — or "God is greatest" — before he was shot by police, according to a statement from the prosecutor's office on Thursday.

It said a piece of paper with the ISIS flag and a claim handwritten in Arabic were found on the suspect, along with a cellphone. The suspect's identity has not yet been confirmed, the statement added.

The incident, which came as France marked the one-year anniversary of the deadly Charlie Hebdo terror attacks, raised tensions in a country still reeling after Islamist extremists laid siege to Paris and killed 130 people across the city. France has been under a state of emergency since those Nov. 13 attacks.

Updated | Officials have named the man police shot dead in Paris on Thursday as a 20-year-old Moroccan, according to reports.

Sallah Ali was born in 1995 in Casablanca. He was homeless and known to police for theft in 2012 in the Var region of southern France, according to Reuters.

Ali allegedly attempted to enter a police station in the city with a knife. A piece of paper found on his body ¡§pledged allegiance¡¨ to so-called Islamic State and vowed revenge for French ¡§attacks in Syria,¡¨ the BBC reported.

The incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The incident took place in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, the Goutte d¡¦Or, around noon. French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henri Brandet said that the man shouted the Islamist slogan ¡§Allahu Akhbar¡¨ (God is great) outside the police station near Montmartre and the Gare du Nord international rail station, France¡¦s BFMTV reported.

¡§On Thursday morning, a man attempted to attack a policeman at the reception of the police station before being hit by shots from the police,¡¨ said Brandet.

A police union source told Reuters that the man was wearing a fake explosive belt and that a bomb disposal unit was dispatched to inspect a potential device on the man. ¡§The man did have a belt, but it was a fake. The bomb-disposal unit confirmed it was a fake,¡¨ the source said.

A witness told AFP news agency that he heard ¡§two or three shots¡¨ in the incident.

Images circulating on social media showed a police bomb disposal robot inspecting the body of the man. The images could not be independently verified.

The incident occurred on the anniversary of the deadly attacks on the Paris offices of the Charlie Hebdo magazine and a Jewish supermarket last January that left 17 people dead.

On Thursday, French President Francois Hollande pledged to boost security with an extra 5,000 police posts in the wake of the deadly Paris shooting and suicide bomb attacks in November that left 130 people dead. He praised the police, military and intelligence services at a ceremony at the Paris police headquarters.

¡§Faced with these adversaries, it is essential that every service¡Xpolice, gendarmerie, intelligence, military¡Xwork in perfect harmony, with the greatest transparency, and that they share all the information at their disposal,¡¨ he said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Paris cops kill knife-wielding man who stormed police station on 1-year anniversary of Charlie Hebdo shootings, thwart possible terror attack

Police Officers secure the perimeter near the scene of a fatal shooting which took place at a police station in Paris on January 7. 2016.

Paris cops shot and killed a possible terrorist wearing a "fake" suicide vest Thursday after he barged into a police station with a meat cleaver on the one-year anniversary of the terror attack on French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

Officers cleared hundreds of people from the Goutte d'Or neighborhood in Paris' after the thwarted attack, shut down local schools and demanded shops close their doors after the thwarted attack.

“It's like the Charlie Hebdo affair isn't over,” said neighborhood resident Nora Borrias, who was unable to get home because of the barricades.

A man with wires poking out from his clothes stormed the neighborhood’s police headquarters just after noon on Thursday. He screamed “Allahu Akbar,” which means “God is great” in Arabic and carried a butcher’s knife, said Luc Poignant, a police union official.

An officer shot and killed the man before he could attack anyone in the station. A bomb squad determined the man's suspected suicide vest was fake. A Paris police official said officers are investigating the attack as potential "terrorism."

The thwarted attack comes on the one-year anniversary of the terror rampage against the Charlie Hebdo newspaper.

Just minutes before the knife-wielding man was shot dead, French President Francois Hollande marked the somber anniversary with speech about the “terrorist threat” that continues to plague the nation. He called for better surveillance of "radicalized" citizens who have joined ISIS and other terror groups.

“We must be able to force these people — and only these people — to fulfill certain obligations and if necessary to put them under house arrest ... because they are dangerous,” he said.

The president also paid homage to police officers killed in the line of duty, including three cops shot to death last January.

On Jan. 7, 2015, two French-born brothers killed 11 people inside the building where the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo operated, as well as a Muslim policeman outside. Over the next two days, an accomplice shot a policewoman to death and then stormed a kosher supermarket, killing four hostages. All three gunmen died.

The terrorist brothers claimed they acted on behalf of Al Qaeda in Yemen. The grisly shooting was payback for Charlie Hebdo’s mocking caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, they said.

France honored the massacre victims earlier this week by inaugurating a plaque at Charlie Hebdo's former offices.

Months after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, ISIS terrorists launched a wave of synchronized slaughters across Paris, killing 130 people on Nov. 13. The barbarians, armed with bombs and assault rifles, targeted a soccer stadium, a music hall and a row of trendy cafes.

My God... they've got brain dead zombies over there, too!! Of COURSE it's not "over", you dumbazz! I wonder how many MORE radicalized Muslims have been welcomed to France by TPTB since the Charlie Hebdo attacks? It's NEVER going to be "over" until the rest of the world takes a stand, and pushes back with extreme prejudice.

They view the world as if it were episodic-format television programming. In their minds, they think that the Charlie Hebdo attack last year was one episode, and naturally, that drama is complete. They. Are. Imbeciles.

Paris police station attacker 'lived in German refugee shelter'

AFP
By Hui Min Neo

Berlin (AFP) - A man who attacked a Paris police station last week had lived in a centre for asylum-seekers in Germany, German investigators say, a finding likely to fuel criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel's liberal stance towards war refugees.

The individual was shot dead by French police on Thursday after he tried to storm a police station in northern Paris, brandishing a meat cleaver and wearing a fake suicide vest.

The assault took place exactly one year since the start of a series of jihadist attacks in France, marked by the killing of 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine on January 7 2015.

On Saturday, German investigators assisting the probe into the police-station attack raided an apartment at a shelter for asylum-seekers in Recklinghausen, in the west of the country.

Their statement gave no other details except to say no indications were found that other attacks had been planned.

A source close to the matter told AFP that the suspect had been registered as an asylum-seeker.

- ' IS flag and symbol' -

The news site Spiegel Online reported, meanwhile, that the man had already been classed by German police as a possible suspect after he posed at the refugee centre with an IS flag, but he disappeared in December.

Welt am Sonntag said the man had drawn a symbol of the Islamic State organisation on the shelter's wall.

He had used different names in separate registrations with German authorities, and filed for asylum using the name Walid Salihi, according to the newspaper.

The man had also given different nationalities at each registration, once saying he was Syrian, another time saying he was Moroccan, and on yet another occasion, Georgian.

But French investigators said Friday the suspect appeared to have been identified by his family and was said to be a Tunisian named Tarek Belgacem.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins had said the man was carrying a mobile phone with a German SIM card, with French media reporting that it contained several messages in Arabic, some of which were sent from Germany.

In Tunisia, a woman who claimed to be the man's mother confirmed that he had been living in Germany but denied he had any links to extremist groups.

She told a Tunisian radio station that her son had rang her to ask her "to send him his birth certificate. He was in Germany."

The link to a refugee shelter in Germany, and the apparent ease with which the subject was able to file with the authorities, risks further inflaming a debate over the 1.1 million asylum-seekers that the country took in last year.

Mindful of the political sensitivity surrounding the issue, Recklinghausen's mayor Christoph Tesche said it remains "our humanitarian and legal duty to provide shelter for those who flee their homes".

But it was also equally important to work "intensively with relevant authorities to ensure that people with such intentions cannot hide in our institutions," he stressed.

Tensions were already running high after a spate of sexual assaults and thefts during New Year's Eve festivities in the western city of Cologne, with police saying suspects of the crime spree were mostly asylum seekers and migrants.

Cologne police said Saturday that they have recorded 379 cases of violence during the rampage that night, as far-right protests erupted in the western city against the assaults.

The latest link to the attacker in France risks fanning fears that would-be terrorists were slipping into Europe's biggest economy amid a record refugee influx.

Such concerns were already raised when it emerged that two of the suicide bombers in the November 13 attacks in Paris were carrying passports that had been registered as they arrived on a Greek island with a group of migrants in October.

However, French investigators are not convinced that the two men, who blew themselves up near the Stade de France stadium, were the men in the passports.
