PARIS (Reuters) - Police fired tear gas and stun grenades during a protest march against police violence in Paris on Saturday after masked protesters launched fireworks at their lines, put up barricades and threw stones.

The majority of the thousands of protesters marched peacefully, but several small groups clashed with police. Two cars, a motorcycle and building materials were set on fire, which generated clouds of black smoke visible from miles away.

Thousands of people also marched in Lille, Rennes, Strasbourg and other cities.

The protests follow the publication this week of CCTV footage of the minutes-long beating of Black music producer Michel Zecler by three police officers in Paris on Nov. 21.

The incident has also fanned anger about a draft law that is seen as curbing the right of journalists to report on police brutality.

The bill would make it a crime to circulate images of police officers in certain circumstances, which opponents say would limit press freedom.

Many protesters carried placards with slogans like “Who will protect us from the police”, “Stop police violence” and “Democracy bludgeoned”.

The images of Zecler being beaten have circulated widely on social media and in the French and foreign press. President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday the images were shameful for France.

Four police officers are being held for questioning as part of an investigation into the beating.

“What is happening in Paris is extremely worrying and we cannot let this pass. I have spent two years with the yellow vests and I have seen all the violence,” demonstrator Caroline Schatz told Reuters at the Paris march.

The journalists’ organisations and civil liberty groups who organised the marches were joined by far-left militants, environmental activists and yellow vest protesters. The yellow vests have been protesting against government policies for two years.

They're going to end up burning down the city.

I know a lot of you don't care, but there's a part of Paris that isn't drunken, liberal frogs with terrible work ethics.

There's a segment that values the past and the contributions France has made to world culture, in art, literature, and culinary creations. They aren't flashy. It's not Orwell's or Hemingway's group of wild-eyed old men. This time it includes women, young and old.

So sorry the violence is ongoing.

Liberal or conservative, that is rather worrying.

Who guards the guards?

I guess no one in power has paid attention to the link between plagues and overthrows of governments throughout history. The lockdowns and "not letting the crisis go to waste", using it as an excuse to pass more controlling laws are not going to end well.

The law of unintended consequences will not be ignored.

There are some wonderful very kindhearted people in Paris. Back some years ago my cousin was 16 and somehow got separated from us less than an hour after her arrival in Paris.

She did not have her purse or any money and couldn't remember the name of our hotel. She kept walking around looking for us and became hopelessly lost and was quite scared. She said she was tearing up and a woman stopped and tried to communicate with her but couldn't understand. The lady walked around with my cousin until she found someone who spoke English. She tried to describe the hotel and someone wondering by overheard and stopped and told them which hotel they believed it was. The lady walked her to the hotel, several blocks away where we were standing worried to death... We will never forget the kindness they showed my very very frightened young cousin.

It had seemed france was showing a few early signs of testicular regeneration with one of the last attacks- that against the teacher, iirc. The pendulum has to swing deep into "enemy territory" but usually finds the energy to swing back- eventually.
