Bump.

This same item is in the Lehman's catalog. Don't know if it works, but on the surface, it seems like a good fire starter if nothing else.

Never seen that, I have used a paper roller before, it was just as good to roll paper by hand and tye using a thin wire...lots of ash, unless soaked in kerosene then they burned real good....I used paper knots before and they work well but don't burn long....good kindling though.

I've toyed with the idea of making something like that, and simply building up a big supply of paper "bricks." Sealing them in plastic would keep them dry. I would not burn them until I needed to because I hate the way they smell. Of course, in any dire situation, the way something smells is a secondary consideration.

I'll be mixing the paper bricks with peat, if you've ever smelled peat burning, nothing out smells peat
I brought home several large refuse bags of shredded paper from work today, that'll do for starters :D

Ah, the infamous peat. I cant say that I have ever smelled it burning, but I have been the benefactor of peat burned inside of whiskey barrels...

I roll newspaper and slide the 'tube' into the cardboard tube within a toilet roll. Makes a good fire lighter - replaces the kindling.

Had one of these for a couple of years. One problem with the bricks is that it can take weeks for em to dry out.

thanks for the heads up,
I'm planning on putting them on a drying rack above the range, that should dry them fairly quickly,
Its just as a back up prep item, i can't see us running out of wood or turf, and its better than dumping all the waste paper, my 5yr old son is going through his artist phase, he throws away loads as its just not right
