About Quilt Squares
In 2012, when things in the world seemed to be headed for major changes in our own worlds, the "What's For Dinner?" threads began having a deeper insight into members' lives. Post's became like a personalized quilt square.
It didn't matter what it was, it was just capturing a moment in time.

We seem to be headed down the same path in the world as then, and in the case that our personal lives are upended in some way, this is one way to keep the memory of our world alive as it is now.
It doesn't have to be exciting, it's whatever you want it to be.
Please feel free to join us, and add your square, or just share what's on the menu at your house.
Everyone is welcome! ;)

Blessings on this first day of Advent!

It is hot and humid here today, but only because a cold front is pushing all the hot air from the southern states along the Gulf over us. We have rain on the way, as well. Prayers for anyone effected by the storms last night and the storms moving NE over the Eastern coastal states.

Today has been about prepping for the week as usual; laundry, cleaning, school work for my kids. With Holidays in full swing, we have a Christmas concert to get ready for, plus midterm testing. And one thing that is important to teach children is empathy. So, tomorrow they will begin telling me their Giving Wish: "If I could, I would give..." Getting them to think about it is the most important part, and not always easy with 4 yr. olds.

Dinner will be cheese tortellini in a light garlic butter sauce, spinach and a salad.

How about you? Share a square or just "What's for dinner?

I give up.
It's only 44 degrees and rainy here. Not much better for the rest of the week. But at least it's not real cold and snow and ice yet. Can't wait...... Not.

I don't know what dinner is yet. Nothing heavy and carb-laden. Had the last of my homemade chili for lunch a while ago, so it's still early, and that stuff is filling.

Hope you have a sunny week everybody.

:)

It is cool, damp and wet. We got over 2" of rain last night when it rained pretty hard and steady for hours. I was driving a charter back to KC from MU (Columbia) in it last night. It was nasty and the traffic was bad, but God got us back safely.

I am making a recipe that Steve Doocy had on Fox and Friends yesterday. Sort of a turkey pie using all the leftovers.

Rainy and blustery here today. Went out around 9AM to the grocery store and Walmart, mostly out of curiosity, and both were quiet. There were almost no shoppers. Lots of gaps, so I guess they haven't stocked back up yet after the holiday. Spending the rest of the day dozing and knitting in front of the fireplace where it's cozy.

Dinner is going to be leftovers of a leftover. I traditionally make turkey a la king over puff crust patty shells the day after Thanksgiving. There is still some left, so we'll be having that for dinner with the last of the leftover mashed potatoes and last two pieces of pie.

I've made that before. It is good.

windy and sunny here . . . last night we drove into ASSville to meet some log time friends from central florida here visiting family over in the center of the state. they'd come to see the Biltmore House at Christmas and wanted us to meet them at Vinnies (neighborhood Italian) Restaurant. since we'd decided to break off the (admittedly not hard core) KETO routine for the holidays and return to it after the first of the year we felt that would be a great opportunity to enjoy some good pasta - and we DID. tonight we'll have leftovers from same - linguine with clams in a fra diavalo sauce for me, linguine with shrimp for the boss lady - and a little red wine. toss a small salad with EV olive oil, balsamic vinegar. some salt and a bit of granulated garlic . . . add some cherry tomatoes and we're gud to go

It's Sunday and mom wanted Sunday menu, so the usual - roast beef, sweet peas, baked tatos, carrots and onion gravy. Trying for no leftovers this time, fridge is full.

Bright sunny 50 degree day today in NWNC ... nice!

Nothing wrong with roast beef on Sunday, even if it is almost every Sunday. My parents were like that. Big old chuck roast in roasting pan with Lipton onion soup and a little water. Takes about 3 hours, the last hour you put in the onions, carrots and potatoes. Now THAT was one of my fav meals from back in the day. Chuck roast done like that has an incomparable flavor, and so tender............ nom nom. I never do that because it would just be too much for me and I bet a chuck the size my parents bought would be outta sight these days. But I miss it sometimes.

That's the way I still make my roasts. What's left over, I shred and make BBQ out of it. None goes to waste.

On The Level
In the 50's and sunny most of the day! Cleaned out my truck. Receipts and such from 2014. Insurance and registration cards from 2018. Got the valid cards and sticker on the plate. Winter gear and snow brush/shovel put inside. Vacuumed it.

So far it's been a can of Mediterranean Mackerel fillets in olive oil, and....more pumpkin pie with whip cream. Probably will bake some broccoli and chicken later.

Hope they enjoyed the Biltmore. Went two or three weeks ago with my niece, had a great time! After touring the manse, we roamed the gardens and slept quite soundly at the Marriott, before coming back here. It is gorgeous at Christmas.

Dinner will be hamburg with a cheddar cheese sauce.
I plan to make some more giblet gravy and a liver worst this week.

We never got the promised rain but it was overcast and pleasant all day long.

I marinated some shrimp and make tacos with them. I also made guacamole and spaghetti squash. I am getting addicted to spaghetti squash.

My Mom had a regular routine for meals. One Sunday was beef pot roast with veggies and the next week was pork roast with kraut and mashed potatoes. She seldom veered from those 2 Sunday dinners. My Father had to have butter and bread for every meal and the white bread was so flimsy that the hard butter would tear it up. lol

Yessss!! I love chuck roast!
I get them on sale but only if within a certain & amount, it’s heart breaking how high they’ve gone. Those used to be my moms toast of choice, too, with six kids.

I can’t imagine how much it costs for a family that size now. :(

My parents would take the leftover roast and shred it and make real hash with potatoes and onions in it. With a fried egg on top and ketchup, of course. Good stuff !!

Oh, that sounds so good, but I wouldn't even know how to start to make that.

Well......... it's easy. Just boil up some potatoes, let them cool, then peel them and cut up into smallish chunks. In a fairly large cast iron skillet, gently fry up some onion until it's translucent and slightly brown. In a tablespoon or so of oil. Then just put in your shredded beef and the potatoes and cook on medium heat for maybe 10 min. Seems to me, you turn it then and it has a bit of a crispy crust. I think that's it. Put your fried egg on top. I haven't made it for a few years, but it sounds about right. You can play around with it til it's how you like it. Not hard at all.

Thank you. I have a roast in my freezer, and I'll make this with the leftovers instead of BBQ. I thought it would be simple, but I had no idea how to make it.

Hmm, I just looked up Wegman's chuck roasts. They don't look quite like the ones my parents bought (they were bigger and longer) and the price is pretty high. Also, I don't know what the eye roast one is, but it looks pretty small:

I was going to make spaghetti because it rainy windy and cold here.
BUT I found a New York strip on clearance for DH 7.99$….and I got a teeny thing for me 4.99$….. sooo, it’s crispy potato wedges/home fries in the oven, the steaks , leftover asparagus, green beans and garlic toast.

He asked where the wine was…, he ran after a bottle after I told him I was done going to the grocery this weekend and not about to spend another dime.

Ok, so pinot noir, it is!
Thank you, DH! :)

Yeah, those look tiny and prepackaged

I wait until Kroger or Meijer has a sale. If you can call these sales. It’s still highway robbery :(

Hello all!

It is rainy and chilly in northern, central Maryland. We have all been fighting something for the past month - not Covid, flu, strep, or RSV. I am just calling it the crud. The entire crew has been on at least one round of antibiotics for ear infections, bronchitis, or sinus infections. Some have had 2 rounds. I took my oldest to urgent care today and the doc there put her on her 3rd round, of course, they put her on a z-pack and then amoxicillin which does nothing for my crew. Omnicef this time so I hope it finally knocks it out.

After she was done there, we ran to the Wegman's to get some of their Super Yogurt, which the family loves. While there, I decided we would have tacos tonight so I picked up the fixins. We are all a little turkey-ed out right now. :)

After a lovely 4 day break, tomorrow it is back to the salt mines.

Cool, cloudy and rainy for a good portion of the day here in the DC area. The missus did some shopping after church, and I stayed home. Under the weather today, headache, stopped up sinuses and feeling yucky in general.
Been playing with my souped up Ipod; loaded an additional 20 gigs of music to it.

We're both hammed and turkeyed out, so dinner tonight was PF Chang dan dan noodles.

Hope everyone has a great week!

When I was a kid and young adult you could buy chuck roast with bones in it. IIRC they were 7 bone roast. When I got married in the 70's they were 69 cents a pound.

Home from work now. Looks like i'm on Sundays again for the next month. Oh boy.

Started the morning with freezing fog covering the trees with beautiful glistening white. It melted off late afternoon. Had a few 50-60 degree days last week but winter is back. Got hay moved yesterday, thankfully LOL.

Cleaned up most of the turkey left overs. I'll strip the carcass tomorrow and boil it for stock. Dinner will prob be a turkey sandwich. Not super hungry tonight.

My best friend's daughter and son in law had a big problem on Thanksgiving. Street racer, or road rage incident, they dont know pending investigation. Plowed into their house, cut the gas line, set the place on fire. Total loss and it killed their dog. Driver walked away, and they are looking for him. They were not home at the time, having gone elsewhere for dinner. They are devastated to say the least. They just bought the house this past summer.
