I give up.
Now this is way different! From the 1953 Joy of Cooking I'm wandering through.
ORANGE MERINGUE PIE
An already baked 9-inch pie shell
Combine in the top of a double boiler:
1 cup sugar
5 to 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup warm water
3/4 cup orange juice
Cook and stir these ingredients over direct heat (not in the double boiler) until they boil. Place them in the double boiler over boiling water and cook for 10 minutes longer. Pour a little of this mixture over:
3 beaten egg yolks
Beat this, then add it to the mixture in the double boiler. Cook and stir the custard for 5 minutes over boiling water. Beat in:
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
Cool the custard. Pour it into the cold pie shell. Cover with a meringue:
3 egg whites
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Beat above until frothy, add gradually, beating constantly:
4 tablespoons sugar
Whip meringue until stiff and glossy. Heap on pie, spread to edges of dish. Bake in 350 degree oven for about 15 to 20 minutes.
