I worked loss prevention when I first became an officer. My pay at the grocery store was higher than the $4.95 an hour they paid me as a "part time" officer that worked full time hours for the first year as a cop. I think in all my years responding to retail theft calls and the many dozens I caught myself, there was only one that I can remember who actually stole food to eat themselves. It was a pack of chicken.
The others, several hundred in all and MANY dozen that I caught myself, stole steaks, lobster, jumbo shrimp and expensive seafood. They traded this for drugs since they had already given their drug dealer their food stamp card, WIC vouchers and SNAP/EBT cards. (WIC is Women and children, EBT is electronic benefits transfer. They electronically transfer money you worked for to those who did not but I digress)
The rest stole packs of razor blades, make up, batteries and other small package high value things that could be sold at a flea market or returned to other stores for cash.
I saw the same people that I arrested at the bum feedings (Called soup kitchens) that local churches put on. I also arrested them buying crack on the street, often paying with stolen merchandise. They just go through life being a scum bag in every way possible.
The only good thing about the oxycontin and heroine that pushed out crack, is it is killing off the dumbest of this bunch at a tremendously high rate, at the same time the police departments have done away with their narcotics units due to short staffing, politics and not wanting to offend certain populations that sell drugs at a MUCH higher rate than other demographics. My son is a homicide detective. He has had more overdose deaths this year than I had in 20 years.
Karma.
