President Obama on Thursday authorized the Pentagon to call up reserve and National Guard troops if they are needed to assist in the U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Obama signed an executive order that allows the government to call up more forces and for longer periods of time than currently authorized. There is no actual call-up at this point.

The U.S. has committed to send up to 4,000 military personnel to West Africa to provide logistics and humanitarian assistance and help build treatment units to confront the rapidly spreading and deadly virus.

Obama also notified top congressional officials of his move.

Nearly 4,500 people have died from the Ebola outbreak, most of them in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The White House has said the troops will not be providing direct health care aid.

Separately, Obama placed phone calls to House Speaker John Boehner, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to discuss the administration's response to the disease.

He also was consulting with administration public health officials and heads of state about the Ebola outbreak.

Obama canceled a Thursday campaign trip to stay at the White House and focus on Ebola. It's the second day in a row he nixed a planned trip because of the outbreak.

Obama was to meet late Thursday afternoon with administration and White House officials who are working on the government response to the West Africa outbreak and on health security measures in the U.S.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama will also hold a conference call with health care workers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Using the guard may be a bridge too far. These are homeboys in many rural communities. This is bringing the Ebola epidemic and risk up close and personal to these communities. Our unit just got back earlier this year from building bridges in Afghanistan. The whole county saw them off in a ceremony and welcomed them back home. We watched over their families with a Homeguard. What will happen when they return home this time? What will they bring back with them to all these small communities? Why did Obama choose them? Why isn't he using regular Army? A lot of unanswered questions.

National Guard, not International Guard.

One would think Obama would know this. Are we sure about the reason he's calling them up? Oh, I know what he said but quit listening to his "words" long ago. The truth in his statement is that it's for Ebola. Where would be the question.

Here's my take on all this.....if the government is calling up reserves, then things are a LOT more hot than the press is reporting. Something has them might worried.

I am worried because it is looking like WE may need the National Guard if things keep this fast pace of people being exposed to Ebola! I think he is taking all our troops away so they can take crack down on us without us having any protection from them. I may be paranoid but things just aren't adding up. We are being lied to again and again. Will they send in foreign troops to take away our guns eventually?

You're correct. So much does not add up. It's hard to step back from it all and see the big picture when it's coming so fast and from every direction. But IMHO, even if someone is able to step back a little and get a glimpse, the evil lurking is just too horrific for a mind to wrap around...

It helps a person move from being stunned, to action... if they turn and look the evil directly in the face. Don't be afraid to look at it and call it for what it is. Evil simply doesn't like being exposed to the full light of day.

The "rationale" (which is irrational) from this administration is that Ebola in AFRICA is a threat to national security. They are still convinced that Ebola here, won't be a problem. It's truly a form of mental illness with them. And yes, I'm a tad worried that the guard activation is for here, as well. But that would require them to take back what they said about being able to contain Ebola here. And that will never happen. It would be another "red line" or "if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor" moment -- and at this point, it's looking like the liberal/progressive media won't be going along with polishing that turd.
