When the ball drops in Times Square Thursday to mark the new year, New York counterterrorism officials are exceedingly confident they won’t drop the ball.

Despite two large scale Islamic terror attacks on Western targets during the past two months – that killed 130 in Paris in November and 14 in San Bernardino this month – authorities say revelers have nothing to fear.

“New Year’s Eve in New York City will be the safest place in the world to be,” said Chief James Waters, head of the counterterrorism unit.

That sentiment was echoed by James O’Neill, chief of the counterterrorism department: “Leave the worrying to the NYPD.”

Officials say there is no credible threat to Times Square; however, terrorists rarely call their shot in advance of an attack.

In an effort to install every deterrent possible, the NYPD is set to deploy at least 6,000 cops -- including heavily-armed personnel, rooftop patrols, bomb-sniffing dog handlers, a special counterterrorism unit and plainclothes officers -- in and around Times Square. That massive force will consist in part of the 1,200 officers who graduated on Tuesday. There will be about 600 to 800 more cops on patrol this New Year’s Eve than there were in 2014, the New York Post reported.

“On New Year's Eve, the department will be out in force,” NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday at a news conference in Times Square. “There will be a tremendous number of officers you will see and many you won't see.”

With about 1 million people expected to pack midtown for the festivities, the public numbers suggest a ratio of one officer per every 166 civilians.

Officials, drawing in part on vulnerabilities exposed through previous terror attacks, also have several enforcement mechanisms in place.

Partiers will be screened with hand-held metal detectors twice -- once when entering one of the 14 access points to the “secure zone” and again when they enter “pens” where people will be kept during the leadup to the countdown.

Newspaper vending machines and trash cans will be removed on Broadway and Seventh Avenue from 34th to 59th streets, according to The Journal News. That precaution is a possible nod to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, in which two Islamist brothers hid pressure cooker bombs in trash cans that exploded near the marathon’s finish line.

Chemical and radiation detectors will be deployed and manhole covers will be sealed from 41st to 50th streets between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue, The Journal News reported.

Said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton: “We believe we are as prepared as anybody can be.”

The ingredients - organophosphorus, a component of many pesticides, and rubbing alcohol - are readily available from chemical-supply companies. And even under the very strict safety precautions used at the military base, it would take Boulet no more than a couple of weeks to make 30 or 40 grams of sarin - enough to kill upwards of 75,000 people.

So why haven't terrorists been loosing on the world this nerve gas that German scientists developed before the First World War? An instinct for self-preservation, perhaps. "It's easy to make - and it's easy to kill yourself while doing it," Kluger said.

Recipes to manufacture the deadly gas are available on the Internet and at public libraries. The difficult part is not dying while the gas is being manufactured; the manufacturing process requires laboratory-type equipment to seal-in the vapors and ventilators in case any vapor escapes during that process. This need for such lab gear is what prevents most people from even trying to make the gas because just one whiff, would kill anyone making the gas.

Wal-Mart, Walgreens and other large U.S. retailers have been found selling a chemical that can be used to manufacture deadly nerve gas weapons. The chemical is found in numerous products sold by Wal-Mart and Walgreens, and it is the same chemical that raised alarm when it was discovered that UK companies had been granted licenses to sell the chemical to Syria, where it is now believed the chemical was turned into a deadly nerve gas weapon of mass destruction.

The ingredients for making sarin, a super-powerful deadly nerve agent, are well known across the chemical industry (and widely documented on the internet, including at ScientificAmerican.com). They are:

• dimethyl methylphosphonate
• phosphorus trichloride
• sodium fluoride

According to this study listed by NIH, a 50% fatality rate of mammals is achieved at exposures of 165 micrograms per kilogram of body weight. The average person is considered to weigh 70 kg, meaning it takes less than 12 mg of sarin to kill roughly 50% of those exposed.

This means the 280 grams of sarin that the Scientific American author could have manufactured for $130.20 could be used to kill over 10,000 people.

And all the ingredients are readily available right now at mainstream retailers and mail-order operations, including Wal-Mart where two of the ingredients are readily obtained. All it takes is a couple people set up in one of the buildings surrounding Times Square with a couple cannisters of Sarin and wham....all those cops are worthless.
Set up a week or so in advance. What are they going to do, search every room overlooking Times Square today? That's not going to happen. These people are deluding themselves if they think they can protect that many people in that big an area.

HOLDING PENS!! I am so glad I do not have TV to watch this. I can not imagine people that would willingly walk into a holding pen. Not something you want to see unless you enjoy the old NAZI camps. I guess once in and nature calls you take a dump or pee on the person next to you. What a cluster. I will sit home with DW and read TB2K to see what ball drops.
If they make it through the night remember they are 2016 voters who would walk into a holding pen.

Once you've convinced people to take off their shoes, go through a radiation machine, and get groped in order to fly, it's probably small potatoes to get them to do anything else you want. I've always felt that being willing to submit to the demands of the TSA marked a turning point in this country.

That is what I was thinking. How can they protect against an enemy that might have been in place for a while now? Like with all those buildings looking over the street, what is to keep someone from just throwing something out a window or off a roof.?

I was thinking of that as I was reading the Sarin Gas reports. You could launch canisters of sarin gas from any high rise office window with a simple air canon. It would land a couple hundred yards out into the crowd. No noise except the broken glass. Not even hard to do if you have the sarin in a canister. You would never know it is coming. The panic would kill more than a couple of canisters.

Probably wouldn't work trying from a rooftop cause they are planning on putting cops up there too but a window would work. Grenade, gas, or whatever.
