NYC launches nuclear attack preparedness PSA

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City launched a nuclear attack preparedness public service announcement on Monday, saying it’s best to be prepared even if such a strike is unlikely.

“While the likelihood of a nuclear weapon incident occurring in/near New York City is very low, it is important New Yorkers know the steps to stay safe,” the city’s Emergency Management Department said in its announcement.

The PSA encourages New Yorkers to take “key, simple steps in the event of such an incident.”

The 90-second video starts with shots of destroyed city blocks. “So there’s been a nuclear attack,” an announcer says. “Don’t ask me how or why. Just know that the big one has hit. OK. So what do we do?”

According to the PSA, there are three important steps to take.

The first step is to “get inside” of a building fast and move away from any windows.

The second step is to “stay inside” and head into a basement if you have access to one. If you were outside during the nuclear blast, get clean immediately, removing and bagging all outer clothing to keep radioactive dust or ash away from your body.

The third step is to “stay tuned,” following media for any new information. New Yorkers can sign up for Notify NYC for official alerts and updates at NYC.gov/notifynyc or by calling 311.

Emergency Management didn’t say if any factor in particular prompted the new PSA, but Commissioner Zach Iscol said in a statement, “As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it is important that New Yorkers know we are preparing for any imminent threats and are providing them with the resources they need to stay safe and informed.”

The PSA comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin made unspecific warnings earlier this year about his country’s nuclear arsenal amid deteriorating relations with the West over Moscow's ongoing war in Ukraine.

Christina Farrell, the first deputy commissioner of Emergency Management, told 1010 WINS that while a nuclear attack is “low probability” it would have “high impact,” so the city wants people feeling confident that they’re ready.

“We know that this material is very serious and can be scary, frankly, but it is very important,” Farrell said. “There is no specific threat at this time.”

Emergency Management has been surveying New Yorkers about what threats they feel most prepared for.

“Understandably, people report that this is an event that they feel the least prepared for,” she said. “I don’t know if there’s ever a great time to put out a nuclear preparedness PSA, but it is very important, and we want New Yorkers to be prepared—so no time like the present.”

Asked if a nuclear attack PSA will only add to New Yorkers' stress with so much else going on in the city, including a crime spike, high inflation and the COVID-19 pandemic, Farrell said, “We know New Yorkers are resilient. New Yorkers like to get the information straightforward.”

“We know there is so much going on in this city,” she said. “We always strive to focus on the preparedness side here, and we really didn’t want to put this off.”

#4 Be sure to be fully vaxxed and boosted and remember to wear your mask!
The first step is to mask-up and stay masked-up!

Although I know ya'll are joking, but yes. If fallout has arrived, recently arrived, or when the ground is disturbed after fallout has fallen -- Mask up! N95 or better if you can, wet cloth as tightly woven if you can't. Obviously NBC filters would probably be better. However, you want to keep as much of the fallout dust out side of your body so you can wash it off. Better option: Don't be outside during fallout -- obviously. Also keep the fallout dust outside of your shelter.

They know what's coming.

Video is sort of ridiculous. But they got rid of civil defense shelters decades ago so it's probably the best they can do.

Or is it?

How about telling people to head down into the subway tunnels? Too inconvenient to manage for them? Because that seems like the best place to go if you're out on the street. And into the basement of your building if you're in the building. Who makes these videos? They should've consulted Shane.

Oh, and if there's a nuke in NYC - don't count on your cellphone working. Idiocracy at its finest.

"You got this!" LOL! Yeah, I'm pretty sure OK and any thoughts of "I've got this!" went out the window when the first bomb went off. Assuming NYC in general isn't vaporized.

I've thought about this here and honestly all I've got is pray I don't die from fallout and ARS. If god wants me to live then great, otherwise well, it's going to be what it will be.

Snip…“While the likelihood of a nuclear weapon incident occurring in/near New York City is very low,…”

Is there any target bigger than NYC? Hm, ok - well, maybe DC.

I love the responses here…and am amazed that there is any entity even addressing this thought with the masses. I have a plan at home…here in Fl is iffy at best… ;)

I always get a kick out of the self righteous NYCers that think Yonkers and Queens will be the center of a Russian attack - they don't want to hear that there's not much of a primary strike list for the city - days of mega blasts and population threats are gone with the pin point accuracy ....

New Jersey with their manufacturing base is a bigger target these days ....

Short but deadly
When I was in the Fire dept. Aux. we had a training thing where if a nuke was going to hit in NY we (5 counties in all) were to go to the state fairgrounds. HA! The whole dang place is out in the open! It was a total joke.

NYC is the ranking banking hub of the world and the US of course. There is a symbolic reason why 911 took place in NYC. I would be extremely surprised if NYC proper isn't a primary target if it ever goes that far.

Don't forget the HUGE shipping ports, refineries, and LNG/oil storage literally across the river from NYC, which definitely puts them on the map as a strategic target.

I pondered kilotons, megatons, picotons, microtons, tons of tons....

If a the big bada-boom happened in NYC and it was a REAL attack from a REAL enemy, I suspect most of all of NYC/NJ would be incinerated. If you're gon'a hit NYC, might as well go all the way ya know.
Whereas if say, Jersey City or Hoboken, or Brooklyn, or Bronx were hit and secondary damage was limited to within a few miles or so. Limited death and damage relative to a real big boo. That would make me believe it was another 911 sort of inside job.
A step further... a non-nuclear boom with a big flash destroys a few dozen blocks square and peripheral damage for a couple miles radius. But not nuclear. In comes FEMA and the rest with their radiation hazmat teams to mop up. "It was a low yield radioactive blast - use all radioactive decontamination procedures" and the TV and most internet service survives to make that announcement. Who would really know? You can't see smell touch radiation, but you may see thousands of people in hazmat suits.

Am I stretching my imagination too far? Did 2 jets bring down 3 buildings? Does most of the ussa govt want a real reason to start a real war with RU?"

As I flew into Anchorage this morning, while taxiing to the gates I was looking at all the 747 cargo planes. Two where China Cargo. I thought hmmm, they could fly a bucket of sunshine right in, land it then set it off when ever they wanted and take out all of the Anchorage area and two mil bases and A major Cargo fueling stop for world wide shipping.

Another example of how these 20 to 30 somethings totally live in a bubble - Social Media for updates ???? NY gets Nuked and they think the power and internet will still be running - growing up with it ALWAYS being there they have no comprehension that it would not exists.
Maybe suggest a battery powered radio - likely something they have never seen or owned.
