The Three Musketeers are now black: New York City’s biggest bookstore markets blackface for diversity’s sake

"In an effort to celebrate Black History Month, and in a push for ethnic inclusiveness, book publisher Penguin Random House and retailer Barnes and Noble are turning white literary characters black.
For a promotional event in one of America’s largest cities, twelve classic novels are being given a facelift as covers swap characters’ races as a means of giving representation to individuals of varying ethnic backgrounds. Nothing in the novels themselves is being changed, so white characters within the so-called ‘diverse editions’ are still Caucasian in the text, making the move the literary world’s version of blackface.

3,320 people are talking about this

Among the titles sacrificed on the altar of hollow pandering are Romeo and Juliet, Frankenstein, The Three Musketeers, and Moby Dick. Grabbing the most social media attention, however, is the updated cover to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, as many believe it is dripping in racial stereotypes. The image depicts a black Dorothy, but instead of elegant ruby red slippers, the iconic shoes are replaced with a pair of sneakers.

The whole ordeal is a strange marketing gimmick, given the publisher and retailer could have easily used Black History Month to promote non-white authors or characters. It appears as if, in their clamor to virtue-signal, they didn’t think things through, as even the woke crowd they’re trying to cater to are questioning the move. All outward appearances suggest few are buying into the ploy.

There is a valid argument to be had that good books should be put on a pedestal regardless of whether the author is white, black, or whatever else. Alice in Wonderland is a great novel, not because the character is Caucasian, but because it’s a whimsical fantasy that ignites the imagination, something it would achieve no matter the ethnic origins of its author or protagonist. Yet if companies are going to insist on celebrating Black History Month, then they should at least try.
The two companies are supposedly pushing for representation, but the only thing being represented here is the disingenuous mindset behind corporate America’s diversity agenda. Time and time again they raise the flag of various causes and tout the importance of [insert whatever identity here], yet rarely do they live up to their own publicly held ‘ideals’.

Be it LGBT issues, poverty causes, or inclusivity initiatives, far too often the people being put on display are nothing more than tokens to the actors claiming righteousness. Thankfully this time people were quick to see through the facade, but who knows? Maybe next year they’ll move beyond literary blackface, and a new iteration of Moby Dick will feature Ahab hunting a brown whale instead of a white one, and the woke side of the net will clap."

Why dont blacks just read classics written by blacks?

Next - classic stories told in Ebonics.

"The Night before Crimmis" comes to mind.

Can you imagine "Little Hoes?" How about "Moby Dick" set in a Section 8 housing?

"I'm gonna KILL that Great White Landlord."

Let's Go Brandon!
Y'all are forgetting one important fact.

The evil White race is dying. With each passing day,
there are less and less evil Whites, and many more
non-Whites are born, to replace them.

It is just simply demographics at work.

White culture is going to disappear in the ZUSA,
and in Western Europe. As is usual, Western Europe will
go first and then the ZUSA.

ZUSA will be South Africa by 2050, if not before.

Learn one of the Eastern European languages and move to
that area, if you want to get away from what is coming,
regarding the replacement.

Had White wymyns had White babies, none of this would be happening.

Remember, by 2100, over half the worlds population will be African,
and the evil White race will be nearly extinct, except in Eastern Europe,
where they are standing up for European culture.

Please be safe everyone.

Regards to all.

Yep, it is cultural appropriation and I don't say that about a lot of things.

I was really hoping this was about expanding the role of black and other minorities in children's books, especially textbooks and primers for certain demographics.

There is no reason why Dick and Jane can't be black, I've known plenty of middle and even upper-class black people that live in suburbia, but the Three Musketeers are in Europe and Dorthy is from a farming family in Kansas.

Changing those just for the book covers or even the text makes no sense and is somewhat of an insult to the author.

I mean if you want something new write "The Wiz" or "The Three Compenerous" set in Mexico during the 17th century. If you are doing a movie or play, have other characters take on roles - no reason not to have Whoopie Goldberg as either the Wicked Queen of the West or the Good Queen of the North (just one example if you hate Whoopie put in someone else).

This "idea" of the books is even more annoying when people are getting criticized for wearing a Kimono style dress during Eurovision but I've not seen any of the same sources declaring Japanese businesswomen for "cultural appropriation" when they wear a two-piece business suit and high heels.

Some things have just gone nuts and it will backfire, big time.

Not to mention the reader.

"You're not smart enough to take on a universal thought (which all books are irrespective of characterization) and appreciate it yourself. We have to "sugar coat" it with the pablum you're familiar with and feed it to you in large type, abridgement, marginal notes, justification, lots of Illustrations and approval of the Progressive Librarian Society."

By this same standard, Disney would have failed. Who wants to see a MOUSE acting like a human? If da mousy don't et fried chicken he be only a mouse? (gak. Owner would take his children's computer away if they wrote that.)

The removal of "Little House on the Prairie" from Libraries because of a "progressive intent" is a similar insult to humanity generally. Little House On The Prairie Removed From Libraries - Off The Grid News

I guess they will never do a remake of Uncle Tom's Cabin in which a poor old, blue eyed, tax slave, Dr. Tom tries to escape from Chicago or San Francisco?

As for the clothes worn by the article's author, in it she is not showing anything in public that Dolly Madison did show in the period pictures I've seen of her. I so admit it would be dangerous for her to do today at night on many American city streets.

Frankenstein, The Three Musketeers, and Moby Dick. Grabbing the most social media attention, however, is the updated cover to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

This is interesting and has nearly unlimited potential.

Frankenjackson, The Three Playas... Muh Dick

How about.... Snow Black and the Seven Pygmies.

Little Black Sambo
is, unfortunately, taken. (Perhaps it could be updated to Little Black Jazzbo.)

She may be on to something.

So, isn't this simply literary blackface?

Once they turn to history, and they make our former presidents black, they will have no one to be their racial boogie man.

White Genocide? South African Politician: Kill Whites, “Their Women,” and “Their Children”

“For every one black person we will kill five white people,” bellowed the South African political leader.

“We’ll kill their women, we’ll kill their children, we’ll kill anything we find in our way.”

~snip~

Despite this, while the politically correct Western powers-that-be beat white-ruled South Africa into submission decades ago, now we hear crickets in the face of black-ruled South Africa’s oppression. Below is the fine 2018 work Farmlands, which documents the farmers’ plight.

While historical grievances should have no bearing on their present treatment, I explained here why white South Africans aren’t the interlopers some would claim. Yet since you can’t “reason a man out of a position he has not reasoned himself into,” the hateful calls to violence persist.

Just consider the demagogic Julius Malema, leader of the aforementioned far-left EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters). A notorious rabble-rouser, he’s seen in the video below singing to supporters the song “Shoot the Boer” (a white South African of Dutch or Huguenot descent). Note that since it was declared hate speech, he changed the words to “kiss the Boer,” though he can also be clearly heard saying “shoot to kill.”

Moreover, he actually said in an interview with TRT World earlier this year, “We’ve not called for the killing of white people, at least for now. I can’t guarantee the future.” When the interviewer said some people would think this “sounds like a genocidal call,” Malema scoffed, “Ah-ah, cry babies, cry babies!” (video below).

In addition, participants in a 2013 EFF event allegedly displayed a red banner bearing the words, “A revolutionary must become a cold killing machine motivated by pure hate” (picture here).

Thus, is it surprising that on August 14, 2012 Genocide Watch placed South Africa in “Stage 6” of the genocidal process, “Preparation”? (Note: This appears to be “Stage 7” under a later classification.) This is when plans “are made for genocidal killings,” relates the organization.

Of course, Africa has seen this before. In the Rwandan Genocide in the 1990s, up to one million Tutsi tribal members were slaughtered at the direction of the Hutu-majority government, which demonized the Tutsis as “cockroaches.”

Nonetheless, the staunchly immigrationist leftist establishment in the West hasn’t taken up the cause of white South African refugees.

They’re too busy talking about “white privilege” and, apparently, believe that some refugees are more equal than others.

Coal Black & the Sebbin Dwarfs exists - at least in part - on the Internet.

Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs
Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs has been done. Not shown regularly on TV.

Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs - Wikipedia
Can be watched online - so far. Google the name.

As cartoon fare it is a bit "in your face" and "stereotypical." But the animation is good, typical Leon Schlesinger/Warner Bros. The storyline is consistent, and there is some notable musical content.

It would NOT fly today because of the stereotypes, which while accurate, are "overstated."

(i.e. who would have dice spots on their front teeth? - "Grillz" are a much "flashier" fashion statement)
