Voter told to turn Trump hat inside out at polls
Somerset County voter Bob Glotfelty has been voting for a long time. He also never leaves home without his Trump hat. But Glotfelty said that when he voted in the Berlin borough precinct Tuesday morning he was
asked to turn his Trump hat inside out.
After signing the paper, the woman handing out the ballots asked him to turn his blue Trump hat inside out.
“(He responded) would it make you feel any better if I put my mask on,” he said, then removing a Trump mask from his pocket.
Glotfelty said that he was then instructed to turn his mask inside out. He put the mask back in his pocket but refused to remove the hat and was allowed to finish the voting process.
“My daughter had a Trump t-shirt and has never said anything to her,” he said.
Glotfelty said that he has several Trump hats and likely wore one in the primary as well.
Somerset County Elections Director Tina Pritts said it is the county policy to not allow those items inside the polling places. However she said that she instructed poll workers to let it go as long as the person is not actively campaigning. She said she was not made aware of the situation in Berlin and the policy is not in writing.
“I am going to contact the polling place,” she said.
According to the VotesPA website, “Voters may wear campaign gear, but election officials and poll watchers cannot wear campaign materials at a polling site.”
