CORONA ‘Non-Essential’ Mexican Brewery Closures Trigger Massive Beer Runs

Thousands of residents in the border state of Nuevo Leon rushed supermarkets and convenience stores to purchase massive quantities of beer after the shutdown of breweries. The panic buying comes as health officials ask the public to stay indoors and keep a safe distance.
Mexico’s federal government declared a health emergency this week and ordered that non-essential businesses cease operations. Soon after, Nuevo Leon Governor Jamie Rodriguez Calderon declared breweries and their distribution networks non-essential. The Monterrey metropolitan area is home to one of the largest breweries in Mexico.
“I know a lot of people are not going to like this, but this is something that we have to do,” Rodriguez Calderon said in a recent news conference.

News of the possible shortage of beer spread throughout the Monterrey area and others as thousands rushed to stores to stock up. Photographs from the area show that despite attempts by Mexican officials to promote safe distancing, shoppers gathered en masse.
Several large retailers reported running out of beer and liquor.

Prediction: there will be lots of people that subsequently resort to homebrewing, which will often due to incompetence have methanol levels that blind them. There is a reason that many endeavors are typically done by professionals. Anyone want to also do their inflamed appendix removal at home, go ahead.

Homebrewing doesn't have to resort to methanol levels otherwise the entire nation of Sweden would be blind or dead by now.

Wine, mead, and beer pose no such dangers at all, and freezer distillation doesn't either, making Moonshine DOES have risks unless a person is very careful and knows what they are doing.

In Sweden, for a couple of generations they have tried to stop drinking by making any alcohol so expensive that no one will buy it, instead, you just get "miracle" 5-day "wine kits" at the grocery store (and yep they taste just like they sound) freezer distillation kits with "instructions" on "how not to make booze because this is illegal, first you add..." and home brewing has probably been THE most popular hobby in Sweden for the last 40 years.

Also when Swedes do get a chance to drink (conventions, weddings, parties for homemade booze etc) they drink to get drunk, it is simply too expensive to think of "having a glass of wine with dinner," people don't want to "waste" the bottle.

Melodi covered your inaccuracy on homebrew.

Even spirits distillation has been done by "non-professionals" for centuries.

Yes, it has. Scores to hundreds of people in Russia go permanently BLIND every year from incompetent home fermentation and distillation resulting in drinking methanol. Oh, and I worked in the ethanol manufacturing industry as a professional for a few years, setting up and running testing labs. I have been to a brewer's and distiller's school and published two papers on ethanol fermentation.

Like everything else in this world, doing things compently tends to work out well -- and doing them incompetently, mostly not.

Depends on what you're brewing. There are actually kits for wine that are so simple that all they need is a plastic two-liter soda bottle, a specialized cap, and the normal juice / sugar / yeast combo from there.

If you've never heard of EZ-Caps, you may want to.

Brewed ethanol beverages are in large part dependent upon competent sanitation to prevent bacteria producing methanol, since there's no subsequent distillation to remove it. (Bacteria can have 15 minute doubling times, vs. 3-4 hours for yeast in fermentation conditions.) Methanol is actually quite pretty easy to remove by distillation, shown by how motivated competent moonshiners routinely manage it.

Being competent and doing it "professionally" are different things.

Agreed. Hopefully, someone who has done something FT for a living for years will be competent at it, although certainly that's not guaranteed. Example where that is: professional pilots vs. lawyer/doctor weekend pilots, or general surgeons taking out about-to-burst inflamed appendixes vs. Amish/hippies/New Agers using random Roundup spray survivor weeds from vacant lots to treat them, white engineers vs. those from The Land of False Credentials/AA Land, etc. Examples not: most politicians, NAM government employees, economists, nonSTEM college professors, mental health therapists, social workers, lawyers, military general officers promoted by Obama, etc.
