POL New York Democrats Launch Impeachment Inquiry Into Cuomo

It is all over but for the coffin, for Governor Cuomo. Note, they did this even though they just had two lawyers start an investigation yesterday, so they aren't even waiting for the investigation to finish. I think the 6th woman coming forward forced their hand and rendered the official investigation meaningless.

Update (1900ET): What has been a terrible day for Andrew Cuomo has just gotten even worse. Moments ago, the New York Times reported that Democratic lawmakers in the State Assembly have opened an impeachment inquiry into Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, the surest sign yet that the governor is seeing his party turn against him following the sixth, and most explosive, allegation of sexual harassment.

Following a three-hour emergency meeting, the State Assembly announced Thursday evening that it would give its judiciary committee broad jurisdiction to investigate allegations of misconduct against the longtime governor, who has reigned over the Empire State for a decade already. During what's being described as an official impeachment inquiry, the committee will have broad discretion to investigate Cuomo over the sexual harassment and his administration deliberately underreporting nursing home deaths.

"The reports of accusations concerning the governor are serious," said Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie who added that the "Impeachment investigation” will encompass interviewing witnesses, subpoenaing documents and evaluating evidence. Heastie was among the state Democratic leaders who called on Cuomo to resign Sunday night.

Cuomo has had a rough day, with 59 Democrats in the legislature signing a letter calling on Cuomo to resign.
Previously, Heastie has signaled that he wouldn't move forward with impeachment without a majority of Democrats supporting it. But according to the NYT, the move to empower the committee, which will launch yet another investigation into Cuomo, might signal a shift in the leaders' thinking, and a major turning point.
The convening of a special judicial committee could signal a shift in Mr. Heastie’s thinking, but it could also give him more time to decide whether to proceed with impeachment. It also may give the governor some breathing room in a scandal that has overwhelmed his administration in recent weeks.
Mr. Cuomo, a third-term Democrat, has apologized for workplace remarks that he said may have hurt or offended women but has also denied ever touching anyone inappropriately and has urged New Yorkers to await the results of an inquiry by the state attorney general before passing judgment.
Nonetheless, the tumult from the governor’s compounding scandals has significantly complicated negotiations over the state budget, due April 1, when the year’s most important policy issues are decided.
Senate leaders have been in regular contact with leaders in the Assembly about their agenda for the next fiscal year. But the governor’s voice, usually powerful, has been largely absent.
Is it possible we see Cuomo's resignation before the weekend is through?
"I do not believe this governor will resign unless impeachment is on the table," said Assemblyman Phillip G. Steck, a Democrat representing an area near Albany.
At this point, the political pressure opposing the governor and political scion has never been stronger.

Update (1400ET): AG Letitia James' investigation into the sexual harassment allegations lodged against Cuomo is strictly a professional affair. But following revelations that Cuomo aggressively groped a female staffer under her shirt, Albany Police Department officials said Thursday that they had received a complaint about the governor's actions from a state official.
The concern is that Cuomo's actions may have "risen to the level of a crime," according to Steve Smith, a spokesman for the Albany police, who explained that the department had not received a formal complaint from the woman, who has not been identified, but that it had reached out to a representative for the woman.
News of the criminal referral elicited a strong reaction on social media, as President Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. tweeted "lock him up!" - a humorous reference to a popular chant started by his father and often directed at his erstwhile opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Police have confirmed via the anonymous woman's lawyer that she didn't want to file a police report. Still, the issue was referred to the police in accordance with various protocols, according to an NYT report.
Mr. Smith said the call had come from the New York State Police. But the governor’s acting counsel, Beth Garvey, said on Thursday that she had called the police on Wednesday night and reported the allegations, after a lawyer for the female aide told the governor’s office that the aide did not want to file a report.
"As a matter of state policy, when allegations of physical contact are made, the agency informs the complainant that they should contact their local police department,” Ms. Garvey said in a statement. “If they decline, the agency has an obligation to reach out themselves and inform the department of the allegation."
"In this case, the person is represented by counsel and when counsel confirmed the client did not want to make a report, the state notified the police department and gave them the attorney’s information," Ms. Garvey added.
While the police department’s actions are part of standard procedure, the situation underscored the potential criminal exposure that the governor may face should the anonymous aide decide to press charges. Cuomo has denied touching anyone inappropriately.

Earlier this week, the Albany Times-Union, the newspaper of record for New York State's capitol region, reported that Gov. Andrew Cuomo had been sexually inappropriate with a sixth woman - another young woman who was apparently in her 20s when Cuomo made the aggressive pass at her - at the governor's mansion.

Though her name has not been revealed (at least, not yet), the Times Union returned last night with an even more shocking report expounding the details of the encounter. Unlike previous incidents, where Cuomo made an aggressive and inappropriate pass at a staffer or a fellow wedding guest or awkwardly planted a kiss on their cheek, the Times-Union described an encounter where a young woman was lured to the executive mansion (possibly under false pretenses) where she was "aggressively groped" by the governor.
Although the under-the-blouse grope only occurred on one occasion, the young woman accused the governor of frequently engaging in "flirtatious behavior".
The allegations by the female aide, who is the sixth woman to accuse Cuomo of inappropriate behavior, were first reported Tuesday by the Times Union. The additional details describe the most egregious behavior attributed to the governor to date - conduct that could potentially be pursued as a misdemeanor sexual assault charge.
The person briefed on the case, who is not authorized to comment publicly, said the woman - who is much younger than Cuomo - told the governor to stop. Her broader allegations include that he frequently engaged in flirtatious behavior with her, and that it was not the only time that he had touched her.
As the Times-Union recounts, the woman says she was summoned to the governor's mansion with a request to help out with a minor technical issue. The woman's story contradicts Gov. Cuomo's description of his transgressions. During a news conference last week, the governor apologized for his inappropriate behavior, but denied having ever touched a woman inappropriately. Afterwards, at least one of the woman's supervisors reported the incident to a lawyer in the governor's office.
Late on Wednesday, Cuomo finally issued a statement to the newspaper insisting that he had "never done anything like this."

"As I said yesterday, I have never done anything like this. The details of this report are gut-wrenching. I am not going to speak to the specifics of this or any other allegation given the ongoing review, but I am confident in the result of the attorney general’s report."
Despite being asked by the Times-Union about the sixth accuser's account earlier this week, Cuomo told reporters on Tuesday that he wasn't aware of any other accusers.
On Tuesday afternoon, several hours after Cuomo's office had been asked about the matter by the Times Union, the governor said in a news conference, "I'm not aware of any other claim," when he was asked by a reporter about the new story, which by then had been published online. That story included a statement from his acting counsel, Beth Garvey, who said that "all allegations" of sexual harassment made against the governor were being referred to the attorney general's office.
New York AG Letitia James is overseeing a civil investigation into the accusations, and earlier this week appointed two lawyers - including a former top federal prosecutor - to lead the probe. Cuomo insisted that the investigation would vindicate him. His sixth accuser has declined to file a formal complaint about the incident.

He'll be suicided or have an "accident" or maybe, ironically die of "covid" before he's impeached. He knows where too many bodies are buried to get out of it alive.

AP Tally: Majority of New York State Lawmakers Call on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to Resign

The Majority of New York state lawmakers have called on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to resign as the governor faces allegations of covering up coronavirus deaths and sexual harassment.
The Associated Press notes:
At least 121 members of the state Assembly and Senate have said publicly they believe Cuomo can no longer govern and should quit office now, according to a tally by The Associated Press. The count includes 65 Democrats and 56 Republicans.
Cuomo’s support in the state Senate was especially thin. Roughly two thirds of its members have called for the Democrat’s resignation, including Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
Cuomo has been accused in recent weeks of sexual harassment and unwanted touching from six women and faces an investigation overseen by the New York Attorney General Letitia James.

On Thursday, the New York Times first reported that one of the allegations against Cuomo has been referred to Albany authorities by a lawyer for the governor. Albany Police Department officials confirmed to the Times that it is in possession a report regarding an alleged incident at the Executive Mansion involving Cuomo and a woman, who was a staff member.

Beth Garvey, the governor’s acting counsel, later confirmed to the Times that the Cuomo administration filed the report.
“As a matter of state policy, when allegations of physical contact are made, the agency informs the complainant that they should contact their local police department,” Garvey said. “If they decline, the agency has an obligation to reach out themselves and inform the department of the allegation.”

“In this case, the person is represented by counsel and when counsel confirmed the client did not want to make a report, the state notified the police department and gave them the attorney’s information,” the official added.
The allegation was first reported by the Times Union on Wednesday.

Cuomo denied the allegation, telling the Times-Union: “I have never done anything like this. The details of this report are gut-wrenching.”
Despite mounting calls to resign, Cuomo has repeatedly said that he has no plans to do so.

“[James] is very good, she’s very competent, and that will be due process and then we’ll have the facts. That’s why Sen. Schumer said let the attorney general do her investigation, Sen. Gillibrand said let the attorney general do her investigation, Congressman [Hakeem] Jeffries said let the attorney general do her investigation, the White House spokesperson said let the attorney general do the investigation, because that’s democracy. So no, there is no way I resign,” Cuomo said during a Monday press conference.

Vestige, I'm pretty sure the LT. Governor gets to step up, at least I THINK that was what happened when Nelson was drafted to VPOTUS.

And I STILL, after all these years catch myself thinking that Nelson's first name was Governor...Governor Rockefeller...

Now I was just a slip of a lad and there IS a town called Governeur up north of where I grew up. BUT still. He was a GIANT in NYS at the time.

Dr Turley was saying that Trump let the Democrat governors "handle the covid crisis all by their lonesome," and now a lot of them are going down in flames. course Trump couldn't know they would murder all those senior citizens, like Cuomo not sending any of them to the Navy ship moored off Manhattan Island or anything? If anyone deserved to be impeached twice, it's that guy.

Nobody in the media would have predicted it would be Cuomo, not Trump, resigning or being removed by impeachment, but here we are. And I'm not complaining.

Schumer, Gillibrand Demand Cuomo Resign As 7th Accuser Comes Forward

Update (1815ET): Despite a seventh accuser coming forward NY Gov. Cuomo derided the mounting pressure from his own party as "cancel culture" and insisted he would not bow to it.

But by the end of the day, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, two of the state’s most powerful Democrats, had also called on Mr. Cuomo to resign.

But by the end of the day, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, two of the state’s most powerful Democrats, had also called on Mr. Cuomo to resign.

Due to the multiple, credible sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, it is clear that Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of his governing partners and the people of New York,” they said in a joint statement late Friday afternoon. “Governor Cuomo should resign.”
As The NYTimes reports, the sudden mass defection of members of Mr. Cuomo’s own party marked one of the most stinging rebukes of a sitting governor in the state’s history, prompting new questions about his ability to weather the most severe political crisis of his decade-long tenure.

* * *
Update (1610ET): With Gov. Cuomo hanging on by a thread as New York's Congressional delegation turns against him, the governor remained defiant Friday afternoon, holding a press conference about the COVID-19 response.

But just minutes ago, the New York Post published an account from a 7th accuser, who went on the record, and offered detailed descriptions of the alleged misconduct.

The woman is a former Albany statehouse reporter. Her name? Jessica Bakeman. She claimed she had been harassed by Cuomo several times since the start of her career. Bakeman, who was 25 at the time the alleged harassment started and was working for what is now Politico New York (formerly known as Capital New York), said red flags went up, given her "job was to analyze and scrutinize him."

"He took my hand, as if to shake it, then refused to let go," Bakeman wrote. "He put his other arm around my back, his hand on my waist, and held me firmly in place while indicating to a photographer he wanted us to pose for a picture."
Bakeman alleged Cuomo slid his arm around her shoulders while he told stories with her male colleagues at a party at the Executive Mansion for an outgoing communications aide, and then left his arm to linger, keeping her pressed against him.
"He left it there, and kept me pinned next to him, for several minutes as he finished telling his story," she recalled of the alleged 2012 incident, when she worked for USA Today. "I stood there, my cheeks hot, giggling nervously as my male colleagues did the same. We all knew it was wrong, but we did nothing."
During her time covering the governor, Cuomo “never let me forget I was a woman,” Bakeman added, claiming he once mocked her for having a purple phone instead of answering a question during a press gaggle. She claimed he humiliated her once in 2014 when she shouted over a male colleague during a press conference. Cuomo later joked about how she had shut the male colleague down, a joke she said she found demeaning.
Bakeman concluded that Cuomo may not have wanted to sleep with her, but that he still routinely uses "sexual innuendo to stoke fear in us."

To be sure, her allegations aren't nearly as salacious as accuser No. 6, who claimed Cuomo placed his hand under her blouse, aggressively groping her, despite Cuomo's insistence that he never touched anybody in a harassing way.

Update (1310ET): In his 'normal' 1pmET press conference, NY Gov Cuomo desperately tried to stick to the talking points of his COVID response but was forced to address the six seven eight (we lost count) allegations of abuse. His response came as a shock to the woke...
"I'm not going to argue this issue in the press"
"I did not do what has been alleged... period"
"Women have a right to come forward and be heard"
BUT...
"there are often many motivations" for the allegations.

Cuomo ended by confirming "I won't resign."
Just imagine for one small second what would have happened if any member of the Trump admin, or a Republican anywhere, said such a thing?
What happened to "believe every woman"? #MeToo?

As Democrats in the New York State Assembly and the Legislature press Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign following reports claiming the governor placed his hand under a young female employees' blouse (reports that have been referred to the Albany Police, according to a statement from the department), some of the most visible members of the state's Congressional delegation have finally broken their silence, and they're pushing for Cuomo to resign.

NYC Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez urged the governor to resign in a statement Friday morning. She was joined by Rep. Jamaal Bowman, another New York progressive who defeated establishment Dem Eliot Engel in a Democratic primary last year (in accordance with what's become known as the AOC playbook).

According to Axios, a flurry of House Dems from the Empire State followed suit within minutes. 11 of the 19 members of the US House from the State of New York have officially called on Cuomo to resign. Previously, Kathleen Rice, another House Dem from NY, was the only member of the state delegation to call on the governor to resign. But the list of those who have joined the growing chorus now includes the leaders of the Judiciary Committee (Nadler) and the powerful House Oversight Committee (Maloney).
  • House Judiciary chair Jerry Nadler
  • House Oversight chair Carolyn Maloney
  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
  • Rep. Jamal Bowman
  • Rep. Mondaire Jones
  • Rep. Grace Meng
  • Rep. Yvette Clark
  • Rep. Adriano Espaillat
  • Rep. Nydia Velasquez
  • Rep. Anthony Delgado
  • Rep. Kathleen Rice
The two issued a statement declaring that allegations" against Cuomo have "all been consistent and highly-detailed, and there are also credible media reports substantiating their accounts."
The two progressives were soon joined by Jerry Nadler, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who is perhaps best remembered for his active role in the myriad Congressional investigations launched against the Trump Administration, along with the two impeachment dramas. Nadler said the governor had "lost the confidence" of New Yorkers, echoing a criticism levied by state lawmakers.
The big question now: Will NY's two sitting senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, also turn against the governor? If they do, political analysts believe it would be game over for Cuomo. Schumer has so far refused to comment on whether Cuomo should resign, instead preferring to wait for the results of an investigation being led by NY AG Letitia James.

Following this latest development, the crowdsourced odds of Cuomo remaining in office at the end of 2021 have fallen to 1 in 3.

Cuomo is being sacrificed to save the "other" Democratic governors who will go down for murdering senior citizens by sending in infected people into nursing homes.

Wolf of Pennsylvania governor
Rachel Levine, Pennsylvania Health head, and Bidens transgender nominee for HHS

Newcomb Governor of California, going down under recall

Insley of Washington State

Murphy of New Jersey,

Whitmer of Michigan

Cuomo gets sacked to keep the pressure off of all the other Democratic governors who did the same thing, and likely face criminal negligent manslaughter charges.

It is to protect Biden's transgender nominee mostly. By the way she also pulled her mother out of a nursing home and put her in a hotel.

I wondered why he is being sacrificed. All of the claims - except #6 with groping under her shirt - were more flirtatious and certainly not rape or even groping. He flirted - badly. He is a powerful man with a big ego, who has a narcissistic personality - he assumes that women can't resist him. But others (Biden) have done LOTS worse and the media has let it slide. Why Cuomo? Is it a distraction? Did he PO some powerful democratic lawmakers when he gave Trump credit? Is it just COVID and nursing home related?

They are trying to distract from the corpses.

Poor Cuomo. He thought they were all on his side. He never imagined that all he was was a counterpoint to the "incompetence" of Trump. And once Trump was gone, his usefulness went too.

Some of these women were just starting their political/aparatchek careers when Cuomo is alleged to have pulled this crap. That means their patrons would have likely found out about it at some point.

Now whether or not these women were intentionally placed in his path or not for this, and themselves knew it or not, would be a good question to ask.

A more cynical eye on this gives a similar vibe to the Bill Clinton saga, except for the local ROE apparently compared to Little Rock, culminating to Lewinsky and how she ended up working in the Whitehouse.

Anyone else here able to imagine Don Coreleone giving Cuomo a scoulding for being a fool, dismissing him from his office and then calling in a fixer to prep a more reliable replacement?

Andrew Cuomo’s Staffers Have Stopped Coming to Work as Scandals Grow

KATHERINE RODRIGUEZ13 Mar 20211,674
1:52
Democrat New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s staffers are not showing up to work out of protest as sexual harassment claims against him increase.

“I hear that most people aren’t even coming into work, and the offices at the Capitol are empty,” one well-placed Albany insider who knew some staffers told the New York Post.
His staff began to rebel after Cuomo refused a second time to resign on Friday, blaming the outrage against him on “cancel culture.”

One former aide said many staffers are choosing to work remotely instead of coming into the executive offices, adding that they fear their jobs are at risk just as they were beginning to see some hope after toiling for hours for months during the coronavirus pandemic.

Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi claimed Saturday that talk of a staff exodus was “greatly exaggerated.”

“There’s a budget to be done in two weeks, the largest vaccination effort is state history to stand up and the continued efforts to successfully fight this once in a century pandemic,” he stated, continuing, “and that’s what the hard-working members of this administration and the state workforce are focused on — period.”

Even though Cuomo has refused to resign despite his mounting scandals, several prominent Democrats have called on him to throw in the towel.

U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) have called on Cuomo to resign, as well as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and 11 House Democrats from New York, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Despite calls for Cuomo’s resignation, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have not said a word about the Cuomo scandals.

Emmy Organization Silent After Giving Andrew Cuomo Award for Televised Coronavirus Press Briefings

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is remaining silent about the growing scandals surrounding New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who recently received an Emmy award from the group in recognition of his daily coronavirus press briefings.

Breitbart News reached out the academy for comment, but the organization hasn’t responded. As Breitbart News reported, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) issued a joint statement Friday in which they called on Cuomo to resign.

Reps. Jerry Nadler and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have also called on the governor to step down.

Cuomo accepted his International Emmy Founders Award in a virtual ceremony in November, using the event to tout his administration’s response to the pandemic while also claiming that his press conferences offered the public “authentic truth and stability.”

“What an honor and pleasant surprise during these hard times,” he said. “I wish I could say my daily COVID presentations were well choreographed… they only offered one thing — authentic truth and stability. But sometimes, that’s enough.”
International Emmy Awards

Hollywood stars including Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Rosie Perez, and Spike Lee appeared at the ceremony to praise the governor.
Now Cuomo is facing bi-partisan calls to resign following allegations that his administration covered up important data regarding nursing home deaths from COVID-19. He has also been accused of sexual harassment by several women.

Historically, entertainment awards groups haven’t rescinded statuettes for personal misconduct or even if the recipient committed crimes. Harvey Weinstein still has his best picture Academy Award for Shakespeare in Love despite currently serving a 23-year jail sentence for rape and sexual assault.
