How about a crank radio with flashlight and cell phone charger or a crank shortwave radio? Not very expensive and would be very useful in an extended power outage.

Perhaps you could also create a disc of all the various sites with downloads and such for prepping and other useful info?

I've always wanted a good water filter. I would be very happy if someone gave me one as a gift!

Or maybe a small solar charger?

CASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some say its "not very personal" and is "thoughtless" but I have never once complained about getting cash for anything. Gift cards scream "Hey, I had $50 to give you, but i decided that you should only spend it at Best Buy."

Actual items.... hmmm. Without knowing a price range:

CCRane radio
quality knives like a Ka-Bar
Wilderness survival training... no clue on price here
Firearms training ... do they have guns???? :shr:
Ammo for those guns they might have

Get with a couple of other people, and stock up their freezer and pantry for them. If they are short of money, they will really appreciate that.

My wife's favorite bridal shower gift is two oil lamps with a gallon of smokeless oil, and she makes the card herself using the computer. She quotes that biblical passage "Parable of the 10 virgins" -- you know, the one that deals with the issue of (spiritual) prepareness...

Generally warm and fuzzy
The Ball Home Canning Basics Kit is a reasonably priced practical gift, and may encourage learning new skills, too. :)

If you cannot make up your mind about what to get, I agree with Phlat...cash is really a good gift. You could always put a "starter list" of things to pick up to begin prepping in the card with the cash.

PS: If they are Christian, a nice family Bible is also a thoughtful gift.

Just a side note, I've always loved getting really REALLY nice road atlas's for gifts. Nothing from walmart. Best one I had came from a railroad but was ruined in a terrible mtn dew accident. It was 10 years old and out of spec tho. Still nice. Its the small things that count I have found.

Definitely cash. Most people don't want "stuff" right now and would prefer the bucks. Or give them a silver dollar. Or 2 of them. One for each of them. Plus it's the gift that will keep growing. :)

A wide-mouth mason jar with a variety of sprout topper lidders (Sprout Ease makes one with 3 sized - here's a link so you can see ( http://www.herbalhut.com/detail.aspx?ID=14023 ), filled with bags of different varieties of sprouts, with instructions printed out for each one (SproutPeople have great info) folded and tucked inside the jar.

I would do entertainment. We love the game Doodle Dice. But there are tons of board games, card games, dice games. You can't work all the time. Put some upscale snack food with it, think fancy trail mix, drinks, and the games.

It's not "hard core" prep but a lot of people forget you can't always work. You need some fun in your life too. It's also useful for making new friends. You can talk while playing most games. People get annoyed if you talk during movies. They might even learn some new things about each other.

Try the wooden Scrabble set---way cool.

Depending on the cash you have:

weather radio
solar batteries and charger
lantern and fuel
canning supplies and canning guide
pressure cooker
Big Berkey (stainless steel)
Gold coins

Oh, try the Lehman's catalog. because just about anything from there would be great too, depending on what they already have.

Give them a nice sized bbq/smoker so they can cook when the power is off. It doesn't scream prep item but is a very nice one. Or you could give them a nice dehydrator with a book on how to do and use. Or a pair of nice Aladdin lamps with oil. A nice grain grinder would be a nice gift with a book on whole grain cooking. A nice set of Dutch ovens with a cookbook so they know how to use them. If they have a nice bbq, tools to use with it. A set of SurvivalRing CD's. A nice set of 'how to' books. Camping equipment. Wool blankets. and on and on..... Along with the best wishes for a long and prosperous life.

One of the most overlooked prep items ever (in my opinion): a heavy-duty yard cart or wagon. It has the great advantage of being able to do so many jobs and doesn't, by itself, scream "survivalist/hoarder!"

Word to the wise:

Be sure they are preppers before you give them any of this stuff. Otherwise it will end up being regifted or sent to the Goodwill Box, and an account of "my weird wedding gift" will show up at Etiquette Hell or one of the wedding sites.

I'm a moderator at a wedding site and, while everyone knows to write a gracious thank-you note and accept whatever-it-is sweetly, be aware that they DO complain about it behind your back!!

(Fruit Loop, who got some strange stuff for her own wedding....including a casserole dish that had food stains in it).

When in doubt, buy them something off their registry or give them a gift card.

BEWARE!

If you are going to give a gift card or gift certificate- go to a dollar store and buy a nice CHEAP Picture frame and FRAME the gift-

WHY?

My SIL LOST the 150$ camp store certificate we gave them as a wedding present! Near as we can figure it got thrown out in the trash.:shk:

Learned my lesson.

I don't know what your spending limit is but a nice gift would be a small freezer and a foodsaver to go with it. Together they shouldn't be over $200. Maybe you can go in with others to get it for them. With a small freezer they can take advantage of a lot of food sale items and buy in bulk and with the foodsaver they can save their garden produce (if they garden) or use it to save leftovers for another meal.

Thanks everyone for all the neat suggestions. They don't have any preps because of lack of finances & not knowing where to start. I wish I could afford one of everything suggested but unfortunately I can't. So I will have to chose a couple of your suggestions & leave it at that. Thanks again this is awsesome!

I like that. You might could get a little creative for the new couple and throw in some type of game for them to play in the low light with their oil lamps. That way they get to practice using the lamps and enjoy their newlywed status.
