Eleven people have now died in an outbreak of Ebola in central Democratic Republic of Congo, say aid workers.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said one woman died on Sunday, while another man succumbed in Mweka on Christmas Day.

MSF is treating 24 other suspected Ebola cases at isolation units in the villages of Kaluamba and Kampungu.

Uganda confirms Marburg outbreak

An outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus has been confirmed in Uganda's Kamwenge district by the health authorities.
Two miners have been diagnosed with the fast-spreading Ebola-like haemorrhagic fever, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

One of them has died and about 40 other people working at Kitaka gold mine have been quarantined, officials say.

Hmm, Marburg in Angola also:

As Angola slowly tries to pick itself up, three years after the end of one of Africa's longest and most brutal civil wars, having to combat the Marburg epidemic is the last thing it needs.

Angola has stepped up efforts to combat the outbreak

So far, the death toll from the world's worst outbreak of the rare haemorrhagic fever - which can kill within days, and for which there is no known cure - has reached 159, from a total of 181 cases.

Last update from Cidrap:
Jan 5, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) recently reported that laboratory officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have confirmed a third case of Ebola hemorrhagic fever. The WHO said it is aware of 36 suspected cases, including 12 deaths that might be associated with the Ebola virus outbreak. However the lab in Kinshasa previously detected some Shigella (bacterial) infections, so some of the patients may have other illnesses.

Public health officials have identified 184 contacts of patients who have or had suspected Ebola infections and are monitoring their health status.

Update from other source (thanks to FluTrackers)
KINSHASA, Congo (AP) -- The death toll from an Ebola virus outbreak has risen to 13 in western Congo, a medical charity said Tuesday.

Laboratory tests last week confirmed 11 deaths from the virus in the remote village of Kaluemba in Western Kasai province, where the epidemic began in late November.

Doctors Without Borders spokesman Francois Dumont two new cases were confirmed from deaths on Dec. 28 and Jan. 1.

A total of 42 patients are suspected to be infected with the virus, Dumont said, up from a previous count of 35.

Dumont said his agency was helping monitor 200 people who have been in contact with those infected, and Doctors Without Borders had set up an isolation unit where one person was recovering.

Last week, the World Health Organization said it had confirmed only two Ebola cases and said other diseases were likely involved.

From BBC:
The authorities in Angola say they have closed part of the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. Angolan officials said all movement of people from northern Luande Norte province to DR Congo would be stopped.

It is believed to have infected at least 40 people of which more than ten have died.
