…… Need tablet suggestions

Sheesh... so, my less than 2 year old Samsung Tab A7 tablet died a couple weeks ago. It was a great tablet, and definitely got some abuse, so I ordered a replacement. It was an "open box", supposedly all checked out, etc.

It worked great out of the box...but never took a charge. Sigh... ok, stuff happens. I arranged a return, and bought a brand new one from Amazon. Came Thursday, recharged fine once... now went to 0% charge, and wont turn on, even when plugged in!

It's going back.

I guess I'm done with Samsung tablets!

I detest Fire tablets... they are lije using a Windows 95 computer, plus all the Amazon issues. Definitely don't want Apple.

I'd like to keep it under $300... around $200 would be better! But as bad as my back is right now, I can't sit at the desktop for long. So I need something that's going to be reliable!

Suggestions?

I'm still using my Samsung 8" Tab E with 4glte cell from about 5 years ago. When it dies, I'll probably opt for a refurb or NOS version of the same one for $100 or less. Thinking about it, I may go ahead and order one to have in inventory.

I do have a new ipad that I like, but it's not cell capable, so it's just used to keep me in the "Apple infrastructure" so I can communicate with family. Cell enabled ipads are too expensive for my frugal mindset.

I can't imagine abusing a tablet as much as I did this Tab E and it still working... but it still performs well.

I will never buy another Samsung product. I don’t know how you feel about Apple, but I’ve never had an equipment failure in 15 years.
Yeah, I'm not an Apple fan. Not going there. But yeah, I'm there as far as Samsung products, and there's a shame, because I really found them to be excellent ... while they last!

DEPLORABLE ME
I loved my Samsung s5e, with the beautiful super amoled screen, but I dropped it and cracked the screen. Not knowing how long it will last now, I just got a tab s7plus.
Thing is a monster! But above your price range.

If you can find one, the s5e is terrific, should be discounted now.

I haven't had problems with any of my Samsung tablets, but you've really had a streak of bad luck!

The frustrating thing is I still have a Galaxy Tab s2 that works perfectly... But the charging plug is someone that its a PITA to charge. I repurposed it for a school tablet for the little girls. It's gotta be 6-7 years old...

What a disappointment. My iPad mini lasted for a really long time, but so have my Samsung tablets (and since my MIL likes to get me Barnes & Noble gift cards, those are usually "free" to me :geek:)

My son's new tablets are Samsung Galaxy Tab As. We've not had problems with them, even used. They die because of him damaging them, not the device. His two new ones were ordered from Sam's Club when they were on sale.
And his old one and my old one both work just fine.
I have an iPad somewhere.

The newest iPad is $299 preorder at Amazon and Walmart this weekend. Wont get a better option

To clarify, this particular version:

I’ve got the current fifth gen iPad mini and it does what it’s supposed to do: Reading stolen books in it in the bed or in the crapper, and sometimes Hulu, Netflix and Zoom, in that order. When I don’t feel like lugging then laptop around.

I'm a Samsung fan, but I do recall having out-of-the-box issues with the tablet I bought in 2016. Same problem you had--wouldn't turn on, wouldn't take a charge. My little A6 won't recharge unless it's completely powered down.

Consumer Reports, CNet and PC Magazine have decent online computer reviews, with some attention to reliability. Costco carries a ChromeBook in your price range, if you're interested in having a keyboard.

Thanks... no, i dont want a laptop... I carry the tablet everywhere. Very frustrating... theyve done everything I need a tablet to do.

I have never had a Samsung tablet, so no help there. I have a fire tablet and it’s crap.

But I am still using my iPad 1,2,4,7 and my iPad mini 1. All still function fine (can only update the iOS on the 7 - but I have everything I need already set up on the others - and they work). Honestly I play free games I set up on the iPad 1 more than any other. I miss the days of free games with no “in app” purchases necessary. Maybe a used cheap iPad 7?

Who else makes a tablet? I’ve seen Lenovo but …

I have a nice laptop, and my smart phone... I can't understand needing anything else, especially since I downloaded the Kindle app onto my phone

Sometimes you don’t wanna squint at the tiny phone screen but also don’t wanna drag the laptop around. And some pages work like crap on the phone.

Lennova makes good tablets. I've had an 8" one for a couple of years and it still holds a long charge and haven't had any issues with it. Only wish it charged with usbc instead of usba

I was going to suggest a Samsung Tab Active 3, but see your not thrilled with the previous Samsung products.

FWIW, I’ve had good luck with the Active series.

My setup is similar. When my Kindle Fire died, I got a little Galaxy Tab A6 to replace it for bedtime reading, music and Spider Solitaire. But when it comes to doing actual work, I gotta have a keyboard.

I had a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge back when it was first released. Eighteen months later the screen got wide horizontal stripes across it. It didn’t exhibit this behavior on startup, but did in regular operation. I was told by a repair facility that it would cost $250 to fix. I paid $750 for that phone. Never again.

I have never, ever, had an equipment failure in an Apple device. And I don’t like Apple as a company. But the alternatives all use Android, which is Google, and I like them a lot less. They’re a direct conduit to the government. No Android devices for me. No Google presence on my PCs. Google is pure evil.

I have a 10 inch Lenovo tablet. 3 years old. Has been dropped more times than should have.
Screen has several cracks, but still works great and battery holds a good charge.
Can read on here for 6 hours and still have 30% battery. Or watch you tube for 4 hours on battery
alone, before needing recharge. Picture quality is good. And printed page is easy to read
with small or large print.

Down side it will talk to every electronic devise it gets close to, but that can be turned off.
It is user friendly and once you set everything, updates will not change privacy settings.
Apps are easy to install and uninstall. And if you uninstall the wrong thing tech support
Is pretty good.

It has been kept in the garage with temps as low 20f and as hi as 90+.
